I have the Azden SMX-30 mic, which has the identical mono capsule as the SMX-15, but also has a built-in stereo capsule. I love the very clean sound and low noise of this mic, which is why I chose it over the Rode. Even with the mono-or-stereo option, it cost less that the Rode VideoMic Pro+, coming in at about $250. And also look at the Movo VXR10 camera-top mic, for a more compact option. It's more sensitive than that Rode VideoMicro, also relatively low-noise, and about half the cost. Finally, for a quality shotgun mic, I also went with an Azden, the SGM-250, very nice quality for about $230, with an option for either XLR phantom-power or a built-in AA battery 3.5mm direct-to-camera. I'm very pleased with my Azden mics, good quality, sound reproduction, and often cheaper than competitive models.

I've bought the Azden SMX-30 a while back and sold my Video Mic Pro (the original, not the plus, with the Rycote Lyar). Besides the Auto-On, which Rode didn't have at that time and I needed, it obviously has a stereo function and I find the voices to be much clearer (maybe because of the lows). At that time, it was around the same price. I sold it used and got around 80% of the money needed for the Azden 30. And to answer your question from this video, I guess I prefer the SMX-15, which I think is pretty similar to my 30 at mono. And here's a tip for outside (because you talked about the quality and density of the foam), I got a cheap $5 deadcat for use outside. I think the 18cm long with a 5cm diameter will work great on the SMX-15. For my SMX-30, I had to remove the elastic, cut a 1 inch gash to widen it and then put in another elastic. This was not because the diameter wasn't wide enough, but because the deadcat coudn't cover the bulky body (the plastic side) of the microphone. With that gash there at the bottom, it gently wraps around it while completely covering the top (where the stereo mics are located). It was bettern in my opinion than spending $30-$50 on a "professional" deadcat, because it only took me 30 minutes to modify the $5 ebay one. But I do think that the same deadcat needs no modifications for the SMX-15 if you want to buy that. Also here's an Ebay link: www.ebay.com/itm/18cm-Fur-Windscreen-Wind-Cutter-for-Professional-Shotgun-Mic-Microphone-Outdoor/152727877578?hash=item238f4a77ca:m:m4g_-DQ4ozWdUcPCtTOG-EA

I'm curious as to why there aren't any tests done on the Rode VideoMic Pro+ with the high pass filter turned on...? Turning it on would cut a good portion of that low end out, and give a different sound. Stock out of the box though, I do kind of prefer how the Azden sounds for you, but I'd greatly appreciate seeing a repeat of this test with the high pass filter enabled on the Rode microphone ^_^

Damn does that Azden sound good. Isolation is way better. I think the Rhode will probably give you better post-processing flexibility. It is easier to bring down bass than to bring it up. But the noise isolation, cost, size, and sound are better on the azden to my ears.

You took off the cover from the Azden. Now try to take off the cover from the Rode. You will be surprised to see that all the rode has is a paper thin cover on the sides. They do not have phase cancellation slots like the Azden has. The build quality is not on the rode exterior but interior it's a joke. This is what makes the Azden perform much better. It's focused on giving you a more natural sound profile.

Dear Max , does azden make hiss sound ?
@studiocorax8790
6 жыл бұрын
Good question, I'm investigating this myself. I think however that a lot of the hiss sound in general comes from the camera, this is then countered by recording into an external recorder (for example zoom h1) and then sync in post instead. I apologise if I state things which are already obvious for you.
@anilagarwal2114
