It's kind of insulting how older players like Fed, Nadal and Serena have a loss and there is always somebody in the press waiting to call it 'the changing of the guard' as though they're relegated to the scrapheap. However, on many occasions, we've seen up and coming players have big wins and then seem unable to maintain that level of consistency.

Tennis commentators and reporters have a lot in common with western society, in that they're incredibly rude when it comes to aging. I think it was the 2017 Australian Open where the Australian commentators where CONSTANTLY talking about Federer's age. They promptly stopped that talk as Federer made his way to the finals and shut their fucking mouths when he won. Federer has been the PERFECT ambassador for tennis for so long. The ATP owes him more respect and needs to crack down on the whole age thing. Shame on the ATP.

Back in 2016, most tennis commentators thought that Fed's better days were behind him. Since the start of 2017, he has won three slams as well as 8 other titles. These grand slam stats alone match both Stan and Andy Murray for their careers. It is truly amazing that he has been able to start winning again at the highest level at his age. As Federer fan, he lost that himself. If you don't take advantage of so many breakpoints at his age when he needs to end matches asap, you're just gonna have a bad time. But this was really close match as the result says and a good one, too. Tsitsipas had his day and he deserved to win, frankly. Maybe he wasn't so much better than the goat but enough. And Federer said that on the interview, he knew he blew it because of lost chances to break. 7-6 means that one breakpoint would have changed the whole set result and he's fully aware of that. But imho he's still in good shape, his game is strong but he can't expect from himself to play long sets and 4-5 of them against 20-year-old and bear it physically. Try outrunning 20-year-old when your 37 and that's one run, try a few hours xD

@ChampionRogerFederer

The main deterioration in Federer's game from 2004-2007 is that he's slower and less consistent from the baseline. And because of this he has to rely on extreme aggression and accuracy on the serve whereas before even if he wasn't serving well he'd still had the ability to breeze through matches against lower rank players due to his options from the back of the court. No Plan B execution. Talent never dies and that's why he can still produce his best tennis even in the later stages of his career, like in 2017, but he'd never be able to sustain it as we can see here, for example. Federer of 2004-2007 would have destroyed Tsitsipas today. On the flip side, well done to Tsitsipas for defeating Federer. He thoroughly deserved the win. I have a feeling Tsitsipas and Zverev will be the next big rivalry!

Break point conversion the obvious issue but also his forehand not the weapon it used to be even two years ago. That was the key to his prime years his forehand was so deadly people were too scared to hit to it, which ending up giving him a bunch of points with errors from opponents trying too hard to find his backhand.

I kind of feel, like he is just not getting himself into position quick enough on both his ground strokes. Maybe its that half step slower, or his eyes just not reading the ball as quickly as they used to, but he seems a little rushed on those strokes and backs off on a lot of them. Also he tried to play safe tennis. Maybe thats just because he wasnt really feeling the ball, but he didnt really penetrate the court on a lot of free balls or serve +1

Tsitsipas was struggling in his service games in the second set. That gave many opportunities to Federer but unfortunately he couldn't convert any of them to win the set. Credit to Tsitsipas that he held his nerve and played well at those crucial moments. In the later part Federer's first serve percentage came down. As usual unforced errors including a few easy ones did him in. Tsitsipas played very well after winning the second set. His confidence level went up. If Federer had won the second set then the result would have been different. Hopefully, he will win Wimbledon this year.
