Even though the movies are titled "Star Wars" this is the one that felt most like a war movie, and I think that's what makes it such a favorite for me. It's dark, it's unforgiving, it has only the sliver of a happy ending because we know what it leads into, truly an amazing piece of art.

That always struck me as a disservice, a classic "all members of a race are just like the first example of said race that we see" trope that's used all too much in sci fi and fantasy. It's utterly non-sensical it is if you think about it for more than five seconds. Why did "Bothans" have to be a species? Why not the people of a planet? If a planet named Botha got zapped like Jedda did in this film, the "Many Bothans died to bring us this information" line would make just as much sense without stereotyping an entire species as a bunch of spies.

This one was absolutely, 100%, no doubt about it my favorite of the new Disney SW movies. To answer your question at 31:53, no... Lucas didn't have this specific story in mind. Only the mention in the Episode IV opening crawl of the Rebels winning their first victory against the Empire and stealing the Death Star plans. According to Wikipedia, John Knoll, a visual effects artist on the prequels, pitched the idea (based on the Episode IV crawl) in 2003 as part of an unproduced series called "Star Wars Underworld." After Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, he pitched it again as a standalone movie. And I agree... Vader was awesome, and Tarkin is a big ol' douche. 😁
@Azure217
2 жыл бұрын
I have to imagine John Knoll read The Han Solo Trilogy of books, the third book "Rebel Dawn" depicts the early rebel alliance and more specifically their raid on Taprawa where they steal the death star plans and transmit them to Princess Leia on her ship Tantive IV, but the entire rebel attack force and it's leader Bria (han solo's love interest for the trilogy) die trapped there. This trilogy of books came out in 1997/1998. When the trailers for Rogue One came out I was at first kinda angry about disney yet again destroying perfectly great stories to make their own (remem this came out after episode 7, which was fine but obviously rewrote a bunch of (better) lore that had existed already). In Rogue One you really felt for the characters and their sacrifices, so at the end of the day I was surprised and pleased at this great movie.

The story was taken from one part of the scroll text at the beginning of Ep IV by John Knoll (did effects for the Star Wars Prequels at ILM and, with his brother, created Adobe Photoshop - he's got a few talents). He pitched the idea some time before Rogue One finally went into production. First paragraph of Ep IV intro: "It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armoured space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. "

He wrote it in the 1990's and pitched it to George Lucas. But it got shelved becasue Lucas thought he would never come back to Make any more Star WArs films. Then the prequels happened. Very nice reaction, Jen 😊, and I don't think Lucas planned this side story in advance but certainly the text at the beginning of 'A New Hope' gave the idea. When I saw it in the cinema I didn't have too much expectations because Ep VII was good, but for my personal taste there were too many CGI-ish and 'smooth' scenes in which the protagonists only have one chance, actually don't know what to do, but it works perfectly out. So (of course) I watched 'Rogue One' at 0.01 o'clock (like every time 😂) on the first day when it was released here and I was very surprised how perfectly they hit the old Star Wars style from the 70s and 80s. It was just amazing. Of course they use mainly the old designs of space fighters and ships which helps a lot, but for me (as many others) the absolute highlight was that they used unused footage from 1977 and fitted it perfectly in the movie and when these scenes appeared on the screen there was spontaneously instant applause and cheers by the audience. 😄🥳😎 The whole movie was really a great surprise for me and it connects perfectly with the original movie. Also I really liked that the Rebels aren't only good guys and the Empire are just evil scumbags. It gives all of them more character and certainly makes it more realistic because there in reality there never is just black and white. Even the good guys have their assassins, snipers and intentionally kill innocent people, while in the Empire there are people who want to do their job and live, but don't like to do it and so on. 🧐 In my oppinion by far the best movie since Disney took over and together with Ep III, IV, V and VI in the my personal top 5 of Star Wars movies. All other movies are at least good too or better (no matter what some people say ... and I'm a Star Wars nerd too since I saw the first two movies in 1980 for the first time, 'Star Wars' (later Ep. IV - A New Hope) as a rerun a week before 'The Empire strikes back' was released), but I think this movie really is an unexpected highlight and since Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin) passed away in 1994, in my opinion they did an outstanding job with CGI on him as well as on Leia. 😊

Well, I don't think people will judge you for liking Vader. I have seen many female reactors watch the Star Wars movies and even though I heard a couple of them saying Harrison Ford as Han Solo looks cute, their order of favourite characters appears to be: 1. R2D2 2. Darth Vader and 3. a far off threeway tie between Han, Chewie and Leia. When I watched the OG movies and then read books situated in the Star Wars universe, the way the Death Star plans were aquired was different. It was a group of Bothan (an alien race) spies that brought the plans to the Rebellion at the cost of many lives. This brought them prestige and positions of influence in the later, by the former Rebellion formed, New Republic. I think in the OG movies someone (I think Mon Mothma, who is also one of the leaders here in the movie) even mentions the lost lives of Bothans, but this could also be a mandela effect from reading so much of the Star Wars novels.

Knowing where this story fits as you watched it would've made it a better experience I think. People like this because it is more in the vain of the OG Star Wars. It's gritty and dirty like the original. The humor is well done but not overdone. And I think a big fear was that Disney didn't have the balls to do the story justice because Yes they all have to die because storywise you can't explain why they aren't in the next 3 movies if they are alive. So lots of people who wanted this story told were skeptical they'd do it justice. Because logically it couldn't have everyone survive. But they did what was right for the story. I think part of that is they didn't give it the same budget, and weren't as hands on. it was a "star wars story" not a part of the "star wars trilogies." But i think that gave us a better movie without the Studio meddling.

As far as the new Star Wars movies this stands head and shoulders above the rest. I saw this movie twice in theaters, once opening night, and again weeks later after Carrie Fisher died. I saw many people, like myself, openly crying for the Leia cameo at the end. The other "new" films are nothing compared to this one in my opinion.

Strange how the actual design for the Death Star pre-dates this film by about 20 years. The Death Star schematic was revealed back in Episode 2 when the Geonossians gave it to Dooku. Galen designed the reactor flaw, not the entire station itself.

If you REALLY want to see something unbelievably cool with Darth Vader. Check out the channel FXitinPost and watch their video Star Wars SC 38 Reimagined. I won't post the link because for some reason You Tube deletes my comments when I add a link. Anyway, a group of stuntmen got together and redid the "New Hope" Obi-Wan vs. Vader duel and dialed it up to 11. In fact you might want to do a reaction video to it.

The opening is shot near a town called Vík. The south coast is known for pitch black sands like this. I really like this movie and the last 40 mins or so is one of the best Star Wars sequence put on the screen. I'd really love it if would get more nitty gritty Star Wars like this. For me the droid stole the show, great lines and a really good and poignant send off when he falls.

Rogue One is by far my favorite SW movie and I argue that it’s the best of all of the SW movies. My favorite part about watching you watch this for the first time was all of the geeking out you were doing about Vader. And all I wanted more than anything was to see your reaction at the end. My brother and I went to see this a second and third time in theaters just for the ending. Vader - Hall Monitor Champion. P.S. Chirrut, the blind badass, is played by Donnie Yen. He’s an amazing Hong Kong actor and stuntman as well as a true martial arts master. There are so many movies of his that you should watch. I’d start with Ip Man as it’s the most popular and probably won’t alienate your audience. Go nuts from there. He will be in John Wick 4! P.P.S. If you liked the direction here, Gareth Edwards did the 2014 reboot of Godzilla which I recommend and his first movie was made on a MacBook for a few thousand bucks called Monsters. It’s actually really good.

Oh!!! Jen!!! I was watching your face when Leia's ship dropped out of docking with a bigger ship. I don't think you recognized it. Your eyes were wide, as if to say, "Oh, that's interesting...this ship is getting ready to get out of there." I was waiting for you to say, "WAIT!!! That's Leia's ship!!! I recognize it from "...a New Hope..." I imagine that would NOT be an expected reaction from you because you're rather fresh with Star Wars, just coming off single views, whereas I've seen "...a New Hope..." dozens of times. So no criticism is implied; I just got the feeling you really didn't recognize the ship. (Am I wrong or is a movie that bears repeated, periodic watching?) Great fun!!! Just disappointed we're all done now. And my coffee cup is empty! Shoot!!! :(

Hey Jen. As a Star wars original from 1977. The most amazing thing I've ever seen in the theater. And some 40 plus years later there is rub one which I think is the best Star wars movie post original trilogy. After seeing this I'm thinking oh my God Disney and Kathleen Kennedy have this figured out. And then they f***** it up. But there's so much more and so much better content. The clone wars animated series, rebels the animated series, mandalorian boba Fett John favreau and Dave filoni said f*** you Kathleen Kennedy you suck. Have rebuilt the franchise. You have such a long way to go. Anyway, welcome to the universe oh by the way, this entire movie structure is laid out in the scroll of the new hope. Come back and read it read it. Again, enough rambling. You're one of my favorite reactors. You're awesome ❤️💚☘️☘️

Ah, you fooled me. I had your mvp and low key mvp picks correct, but thought for sure you would pick Orson Krennic as your worst since he seemed to show up for all the bad things that happened. A quick note on Tarkin. The actor who played Tarking, Peter Cushing, passed away in 1991, but the cgi was so good that it had me fooled and I had to look him up when this came out in 2016.

Great reactions to this one, Jen!👏It is very sad that everybody dies in this one. But, then it makes sense why you never see any of their characters in episode 4. It also explains why there was such a flaw in the Death Star. People have been complaining about that for years. I don't think "Rogue One" was ever planned in the future. I think they just found away to explain the vulnerability in the death star, without messing up the time line.
