The reason they have so many characters that were in the OT was because it wouldn't make sense if they weren't there. Like, Tarkin had to be in this movie otherwise it would feel wrong.

andreas wiig wennesland that is true. however, movies still have flaws regardless of whether we like them. TFA had flaws mainly due to being a re-hash and relying more on nostalgia than actually being innovative with its story. That doesn't make it awful. Rogue One looks to have a much more new and innovative story that still ties in with the original trilogy while standing on its own.

I don't necessarily agree that it's nostalgia and re-introduction to characters we've met before held this movie back from total independence. In the end, this movie is literally the connective tissue between all the canon so for certain characters of importance at this point in the timeline to not appear in the movie would just be wrong. After all, this is RIGHT before A New Hope... So the fact that it visually resembles A New Hope in many ways is definitely not a negative for me, in fact it's a positive. This was not, and should not have been totally independent of the saga films, particularly A New Hope given it's context. If Dan wants a movie totally independent of the saga films, you'll need something set in a different time period like the old republic.

I just saw the movie, I generally like Star Wars but am not a fan fan, haven't read any material ever, went in barely knowing that the story took place just before episode IV, and I was BLOWN AWAY....These are the biggest stakes, the most likeable characters, and when shit gets real, it gets really real. The story was superbly told, but the characters, the actors, the chemistry, I could not believe the perfection, the talent, the departure from all the other movies...the best Star Wars so far.

thanks for the review! As someone not too steeped in SW lore, I was able to enjoy the film. I am familiar with the previous films, but it's been 10+ years since I've watched the original trilogy, and haven't kept up with the extended universe much at all (TV Shows, books, games etc) but I was able to enjoy it, appreciate the characters, and understand the plot. I probably missed a bunch of nostalgia cameos, but it didn't take away from it for me. I agree that there were some character choices that were weird, like the family bond forming so quickly lol but I also understand time constraints so I can let it pass. All in all I enjoyed it, and would/could recommend it to fans and non-fans alike. It may even provide a nice way in for those that aren't fans, who knows!

Different movie? Rogue one was supposed to be about the story of the secret spy mission that stole the death star plans... they turned it into the usual Starwars movie with space battles, Y-wing trench runs and crappy cameos of digitally rcreated characters. And what about the soundtrack? It seemed like that of an unofficial movie that wasn't able to use the original songs because it didn't have the rights to them.

Unless you began watching Star Wars with the original trilogy and loved it, I don't recommend Rogue One. It's the only Star Wars film which doesn't explain the setting with text at the start of the movie. The movie is a montage of meaningless action sequences. It also doesn't have a great soundtrack, which is a big deal in Star Wars. I think its appeal comes purely from nostalgia of Star Wars: A New Hope.

Went to the midnight screening here in Australia. I really enjoyed this movie, the dark tone to it all built up really nicely and a satisfying climactic. I totally agree that the nostalgia is a little too heavy but it doesn't sink the movie. It's got a 7.1/10 on imdb but I'd say it will be pushing 7.5-8 by the end of opening weekend.

I feel like this movie is a stepping stone for the next stand alone films. It has elements that were entirely new (and now canonical to the SW universe), but with clear connections to the original trilogy that establish Rouge's place in the story. I look forward to the Han Solo stories that they'll create because those can really flourish as film apart from the nostalgia.

Thank You Guys for the STAR WARS : ROGUE ONE a STAR WARS Story review...i saw the movie yesterday 15thDec2016! Initially gave it 5-Star then have to minus 1-Star for omitting many Stylish Scenes found on the Trailers! Minus 1-Star for not showing the Imperial TIE Interceptors, preferably flying to defend the Lord Darth Vader Super Stardestroyer while the Standard issued TIE Fighters are losing fast to the Rebel Alliance X-Wing! Minus 1-Star for not showing the Initial Plasma Blast that took out Jedha! So remaining 2-Star for the " It could have been The Best STAR WARS movie so far! ". Hope Disney-Lucasfilm Honchos select a Real STAR WARS Die Hard Fan to direct future STAR WARS movies... Gareth Edwards missed a Golden Opportunity and now can go back to direct Godzilla movies .... Why is that, after spending so much resources, Stylish Scenes have to be omitted on the Final Cut of the movie! Fans paid good money to see more, not less! The Final Cut of the movie should be even better than the trailers, all good movies should be that way.... nevertheless, i still gonna watch it again two more times at different Cineplexes to check out their AV performance and to watch Jyn Erso and the reprogrammed Imperial Security Droid K2SO, which is both intelligent and articulate and has such expressive eyes! and Chirrut Imwe the blind monk character played by Canadian/HK Kungfu Superstar Donnie Yen and Baze Malbus played by Jiang Wen...... still dreaming of some Cineplexes will show the uncut version of the movie some where, still dreaming about it....

You were a bit "pun"tastic at times Dan. But in a good way. Love your reviews as always. Both of you shared some very interesting insights. Looking forward to your spoiler-review. I agree with many of your points. Rogue One may not have been a perfect film. But considering the gamble Disney was taking on a stand-alone (Thank goodness!) film, I felt they were largely successful. I hope moving forward they continue doing these sort of "anthological" movies set in the Star Wars world. Also, you felt the Jedi's absence in the wake of the Jedi Purge. In fact, the film made me want to watch A New Hope immediately after I finished Rogue One. Isn't that amazing?

You know what I realized about the battle over Scariff? They wouldn't have won if it weren't for the actions of the Ghost crew. Look, how were they able to send out the signal of the Death Star plans? A Star Destroyer was inactivated by U-wing bombers that were stolen by the Ghost crew for the rebellion. And how was the inactive Star Destroyed rammed into another Star Destroyer? Through the use of a Hammerhead Corvette which was also provided for the rebellion through the efforts of the Ghost Crew. Sending the starships crashing into the Shield Gate thus allowing the Death Star Plan signal to be successfully broadcasted out of Scariff. The victory of Rogue One would not have been possible without the efforts of the Ghost crew from Star Wars Rebels. That's how important the TV series is.

That is what the episodic movies are for. These movies are one and done spin offs that focus more on the characters and the lives they live and choices they make and, most importantly, the consequences of those actions. I like the change in pace between the bigger and more broad themed main story.

True: if you are a fan it is great. Also true: if you are not a fan, the best thing about this is the idea behind it. The idea of the movie is great, the idea for each character is great, the idea for the set pieces is great. Nothing of that is translated very well into the film. You might get lost among the copious amount of fan service and bored because of the lack of development of the characters, and the lack of the originality in the story, specially since we all know how it's going to end.

Just saw it yesterday. It suffers from the same problem as Final Fantasy XV which is piss poor story telling. The movie just jumps around for the first 30 mins with no focus or explanation. We don't even know any of the characters names besides Jyn. And why is Princess Leila on that ship in the end? Why would a princess be in a ship in the middle of a battlefield? Out of all 9 theatrical Star Wars films, Rouge One is the least interesting.

The plot/acting was fine but the blurred background really annoyed me throughout the video. Why blur 90% of the screen the throughout the movie? If you don't understand what I'm talking about, watch 1.22 of this video with the three black stormtroopers. You can only see the first one properly, and the background is horrible. Don't make the same mistake that I did - watch it in 2D - having no properly shot background really messes with the 3D effect!

I hope Disney makes a story for Boba Fett or the Fett family line in general. That would be really interesting for Star Wars fans, especially those who liked original trilogy and the mysterious but big name bounty hunter: Boba Fett.

They made Darth Vader, lord of the Sith and one of the best villains in movies say a pun. Not a cool one-liner like 'I find your lack of faith disturbing', or 'Apology accepted'. A PUN. A very very VERY UN-CLEVER pun. And that's not the worst part of that script. If you watch this movie plug your ears every time the characters are talking, and only unplug them in the action scenes. That's the only way you'll keep your sanity.

I liked all the old people in the movie. For people who saw the originals in the theaters, they would be the age of a lot of the pilots.

As an average Star Wars fan (meaning to me that I have seen the movies and that's it) i had no trouble following this film. Also, The nostalgic references didn't jar me out of the story because I didn't catch all of them until someone pointed them out. So it is possible for someone to not have any of the problems they are talking about. i did have to see it 3 times though because i fell asleep the first 2.

Don't understand this hatred for so called "fan service". Isn't the filming of a movie to service fans?Who has kept this entire science fiction universe alive for almost forty years? Do they not count? Is a movie created to please those that hate it? The guy seems a little pissed that a Star Wars movie would have Star Wars characters and plot in it. The movie is about getting the Death Star plans,so by definition,it is entirely based on "going back to the well".That is the whole point.Sometimes you can get too jaded and lose your ability to recognize joy and great work when it is presented to you.

Nostalgia is important and is what MAKES it a Star Wars story. Those "familiar" things are vital psychologically, because people adjust to the NEW a LOT SMOOTHER with things that ARE FAMILIAR that make us feel "at home", and to keep us grounded. THAT IS important. IF we had something just NEW with NO MENTAL or EMOTIONAL CONNECTION to things familiar... then it could become more alienated facing more criticism of the opposite perspective, causing people to say, "THAT'S NOT STAR WARS! THERE'S NOTHING DIFFERENT THAN STAR TREK OR ANY SPACE SHIP MOVIE!!!". What makes Star Wars, STAR WARS... IS THE NOSTALGIA, AND the things mentioned that we KNOW of already. #EASTEReggs It's what makes us feel like pieces of the STORY puzzle are being put together carefully in the Star Wars universe. Psychologically, that's just how it works in order for the opening of peoples minds to accept NEW material. The SAD THING.. this video PROVES that people are ALWAYS going to complain about SOMETHING. SOMEONE will ALWAYS want to criticize instead of just enjoying the stories being told, as they are made... BY THE STORYTELLERS. WE DON'T OWN STAR WARS. WE AREN'T THE STORY TELLERS. We are the FANS, the VIEWERS, and the AUDIENCE. Our place is to sit back and ENJOY it or NOT. Would you go tell Leonardo DaVinci HOW HE SHOULD HAVE PAINTED SOMETHING, according to YOUR opinion? Do you think HE WOULD LISTEN or EVEN CARE?!? Movies are ENTERTAINMENT... either enjoy it or don't, because there is SO MUCH MORE out there, than Star Wars, anyway. Find something you can be passionate about and report, review or whatever that's GOOD. If you really wanted to be technical, think about this... WHAT IF people did reviews on YOUR SHOWS?? and EACH episode saying things like, "They are so redundant. they're no different than COLLIDER. They take too long to explaining things. They're way too opinionated. They criticize too much. It's just another so-called KZitem wanna-be news channel, but has way more opinions, than FACTS." I mean, I'm not saying this is my opinion. I AM saying WHAT IF you were criticized with the same attitudes and opinions that you criticize with? Ya know? I just found your show, and I've watched a few things that I've enjoyed... until this one. Some things just need to respected and left alone without criticism... it IS what it IS. YOU have YOUR style, and ROGUE ONE has it's style. I have my opinion, so why would I even care about yours in the first place?!?! GIVE US FACTS, not GOSSIP and OPINIONS. POINT IS... A REVIEW IS A REVIEW... tell us FACTS or high-lights of what excited you most, but NOT things you DON'T LIKE... we don't care about that stuff...WE MIGHT LIKE THEM!!! Just as YOU wouldnt care about US criticizing YOUR show, either. You guys work hard to produce your show, with your style... that's YOUR choice to do it like the way you do it. OUR choice is to watch and enjoy or unsubscribe and go somewhere else, because WHAT DOES OUR OPINION OF YOUR SHOW MATTER, ANYWAY? Like I've said, I enjoy your show... the fun brainstorming of trailers, trying to figure things out, news of what's going on with certain franchises, and all that's GREAT... we don't really care about your opinions if something sounds cool, looks cool, fits cool or anything else... we don't even care if you didnt like your jeans when you tried them on and they didnt fit! THAT'S YOUR OPINION... we dont care about them... we care about what's GOOD. #ANOTHERPERSPECTIVE.

i really didn't when they said oh to much nostalgia, i mean the characters that were brought back are intergrated with the story , i mean rogue one is about the galatic empire vs the rebel alliance, how can you not have major characters from the saga , not come out and play a role into major events, like the one in rogue one, its like saying gee , where's vader oh he's asleep or where's leia, ah mani and pedi. come on.

I'm a big Star Wars fan. I saw the original in 1977 at a drive in I wasn't 10yo. It was magical. (And no we didn't knew it was about blowing the death star.) I know a lot more about SW than the average person but not nearly as much as today's hardcore fans. Over all I liked it but. For a movie that claimed to be a stand alone it felt like a long collage of easter eggs and references. Sure there was bunch of "scène à faire" but they could had done with much less fan service.Worth the price of admission but not the $20 lunch. Never go to a movie on an empty stomach! lol
