My favorite is De Atramentis Document Sepia Brown. It’s waterproof so I can watercolor over sketches.

I'll have to try that. Thanks Arlene!

This was an enjoyable video. Speaking of Rohrer & Klingner, my favorite ink of theirs is Alt-Goldgrün. Of Diamine, Majestic Blue and Autumn Oak.

I recommended r&k Solferino as a powerful contrast to the beautiful mellowness of their Sepia!

That really is a very powerful contrast! I like it, but I couldn't use a colour like that for too long. Too bright and magenta/pink on the page for my eyes!

Glad you enjoyed it! I'm with you on Alt-Goldgrün, but also Alt-Bordeaux, Verdigris and Scabiosa. With Diamine ... too many to mention!

Thanks for the video. I like Rohrer & Klingner´s Sepia a lot. A new favorite of mine is Diamine Salamander, a greenish murky beige brown.

Yes++ to this colour. One of my first favourite inks when I got started

That is one I like too - although I think I tend towards Evergreen, which is slightly more green rather than brown - but then, I love all Diamine inks bar the pinks!

Thanks for this one. You might want to consider Robert Oster’ Cafe Crema…fantastic ink!

Sepia, traditionally, in art, photography, etc, only refers to the origin of the pigment (cuttlefish), not the intensity.

I do not have any ink listed as Sepia. However I have watched a number of films in what is called "Sepia tone". There are many shades of brown tint in the film so any ink marked sepia can be any shade from light to almost black and be correct. Personally I like light brown, brown and dark brown as a better description.

Yes, it's odd. I always thought that sepia was that orange/brown such as you see in old photos, but apparently it can mean a variety of things to different ink makers. Diamine does tend to have simpler names, generally!

Got turned off of Sepia by an experience with a Visconti Sepia sample. It was a monstrous ink, spreading, feathering and bleeding on all papers. Maybe I just received a bad sample. I have been tempted to order another sample from a different retailer to see if is bad again. Anyway your two samples encourages me to seek out other brands. I purchased a set of three R&K inks including Alt Gold Gruen, none of which have been opened. I currently suffer from an irrational desire to use up samples. But seems I buy more samples that I use up. Or well so is the life of a penman. So I see several Sepia Samples in my future thanks to you, lol. Best wishes and thanks for another grand video. ink,

Thanks so much. It makes me happy to see happy viewers! I really cannot recommend Diamine's Sepia highly enough. I love the colour - warm, somehow, and cheerful. And the shading makes it look excellent on the page.

Good explanation on lever filler systems. Many vintage ones had "wait 10 seconds after releasing the lever" in the instructions. (Most of my pens are vintage, many lever filler ones.) Nice review of the Roher und Klingner ink!" I fully agree that there's definitely a range in "sepia." A similar color I've become a fan of is vintage Parker Quink washable brown. It's very much in the "sepia" range. Will say that my experience with it is from around 1940s bottles (the ribbed Art Deco ones.) It's a personal favorite.

I do like a lever filler. There's something about the simplicity, and the fact you don't have to keep unscrewing the barrel to fill it etc. One day I hope to get myself a Mark Twain crescent filler from Conklin to play with - sadly, not for a while! I haven't tried a Quink washable brown. I wasn't sure what you meant there - do you mean you have a store of 80 year old inks?!

@writerlywitterings I'd strongly recommend a vintage Conklin over a modern. Modern is frankly Conklin in name only, in my opinion. As to the Parker Quink washable brown, it's frequently on eBay, at least in the US. Just something Parker hasn't made since around the 1970s, but after I found an unopened bottle on eBay, when I was comparing modern inks with vintage, it became a personal favorite color. Seems like it lasted longer outside of the US, but it's still available (unlike Sheaffer's Skrip Persian Rose. That seems to only exist in hoards or in legends, today.) I disagree with people who say lever filler pens are hard to clean. Not worse than an average cartridge converter pen, and definitely easier than a piston filler. "But they don't hold much ink." On average, .7 mL, about the same as many converters. "Sacs fail in around a decade." Then why have I had multiple 70+ years old, still using their original sac? Not sure where the Pendragons get theirs from (only source for sacs in the UK I've heard of), but every replacement sac sold in the US is made on the same original White Rubber Company molds, with all original equipment, to the same latex recipe and the same thickness, so I question "only a decade or so." Besides, you end up replacing converters, too... The ones I've gotten with calcified sacs all have had ink left in. Properly cleaned, they seem to last for years.

Always nice to hear from you, Michael. Do you have any experience with Jacques Herbin’s Caroube de Chypre? I find it to be a gorgeous shimmery brown.

Sadly, no. I have only the one J Herbin, which is the Poussiere de Lune, which is lovely. I know others who swear by Caroube, though.
