I’ve bought a tamper that fits the ROK portafilter which makes the workflow so much better. This is my dedicated camping coffee setup

I replaced the portafilter with the naked one and the basket with IMS 51mm. Put a puck screen on top and you get yourself a tastier espresso

I had a problem after about 4 years when the bolt at the top stripped. ROK sent a replacement at no charge by courier the same day!

i first used the rok at my friends apartment, not only the coffee was great, but for me its so oddly satisfying to use the machine. I own a Jura as well, and just hitting button comes not even close to the sensation of using the rok. Also the company culture is quite remarkable, like upgrade kids for older machine etc.

5 years with my Rok(s) (expresso machine and - of course: grinder), updated 2 years ago with the black plunger kit ... no sign of any wear ... maybe it will last 100 years*, and still make fantastic expresso with crema !!! *Outlast me ... :)

I bought mine from the designers .. in 2003. So 20 years and ongoing - with a black plunger kit of course. I have gifted 6 others - and made friends for life !

I have my ROK for about 3 years from a friend who had it previously for I think at least the same amount and after all this time, the only problem was just some oxidation inside the portafilter. Unexpected to find that after that much time, Rok sent me a replacement portafilter for free.

Im using el cheapo calibrated n600 to grind my coffee for this rok. Im using 17-18gr produce 36 gr espresso at 7-9 bar. I know that pressure due to Im using modified pressure gauge piston, local made heavy brass bayonet ring, bottomless brass portafilter. So yeah with this setup it can get to 9 bar but its abit tiring to do that continously and with that modification especially on bayonet ring, it can withstand 7-9 bar pressure regularly without afraid it suddenly crack

@homecafecharlie

Is it an upgrade? Aren't they fairly similar? I love my ROK but would be interested to get a Flair 58 😍
@rogierdikkes

Interested too, the cafelat allows to not having to preheat due to materials. Also pressure gauge on the robot. But wonder if it's worth the 200 euro price difference. Like the metal color from a Rok also more. The price difference allows me to buy the Rok grinder and Rok espresso maker for same price as the robot.

Robot makes great shots if you're into manual pull machine, and I think it would hold more coffee than the ROK.

Ah sorry I sold it already. I generally used to boil the kettle and pour hot water in the top to warm up the brew chamber, then grind and puck prep, then pour out the hot water and refill straight from a freshly boiled kettle. Got some pretty sweet results!

How do you manage heat with the Rok? With Flair you can move the head to preheat it with the steam from your kettle.

They are very similar machines. The Flair with the pressure gauge is more expensive.

The Flair to me is way too clunky to even setup, before you even begin making an espresso you have to put the whole thing together (after heating elements separately), and after you're done it's just as much work to clean up. Only thing the ROK needs is to pass boiling water once (or twice?) through it and you're good to go. The ROK is truly a well engineered machine, and with practice it can make some amazing shots that are in no way inferior to the Flair.

Flair for sure looks fancier, but the workflow looks tedious AF. ROK on the other hand seems much simpler and straight forward. I often lost the urge of even making anything with my already simplified Cafelat Robot and ended up selling it. At the end, I like things fast and simple, Been drinking black coffee out of Moccamaster a lot lately, no brainer and I've stopped weighing beans and worry about water temp. Just scoop, grind and brew.. easy

I also have the Rok grinder, so you get the juices flowing first thing in the morning ... not due to drinking the coffee, but energetic arm movements ... :) My micro-review: (i) grinds the coffee well and (ii) by counting the number of turns - which I do all the time, mainly to be able to cater to peoples' preferences for more or less strong coffee - it seems to me that you grind a very consistent QUANTITY of coffee ... I guess a good base for creating consistently good expresso ?
@homecafecharlie
2 жыл бұрын
Yes being consistent on just about everything is the name of the game in espresso, and making fine adjustments to variables as needed. The ROK grinder is a fun one, I hope you enjoy it!
