In my opinion, it's one of the best synths ever made. Why? It sounds very Hi-Fi and hypnotic. Even though it's digital, its sound is not plastic; it's very organic. Additionally, its effects sound very good, and you don't need any external processors.

Thank you! This was and excellent and fun retake on a classic synth. The D-50 is also famous now for the long envelope times on the synth partials that allow for cool tones that change and move.

Right? Which instrument would you like to get your hands on?

You have to re-edit the video. Not using patch 47 is blasphemia, it is the signature D50 sound. The real reason to get the original is the lickability. It is such a fine crafted instrument. The epitome of Japanese production. And because it was not used much (the M1 kicked its butt 1 year later), most D50's are in mint condition. Somehow it didn't gig well. DX7's on the other hand often look like they were thrown of stage (because the 6-op FM was so hard to program I guess).

1-1 Fantasia 1-6 Living Calliope 2-1 DigitalNativeDance 3-7 Soundtrack 4-4 Pizzagogo 6-1 Staccato Heaven Those six sounds are the definitive signature sounds of the D-50.

@@adamgh0 Neither of those use the digital resonant filter, so I would not call them signature sounds. They are most of all very recognisable as D50 sound, but the did not age well and unless you want to make a song sound like late 80's cheese, don't use them in '24. 4-7 is one of the very few using the very unique and expressive filter, and it still sounds killer today, unmatched with no alternative from true analog synths.

@@2kBofFun If your talking about "Spacious Sweep", that's 80's cheez whiz² my man. Sounds like something Gunship would use to make a synthwave track. It is a cool patch though. Lots of saws.

I had the DX-7. But I found that my fingers got a bit weaker by playing that type of keyboard instead of a piano keyboard... so I eventually sold it, bought a KX-88 mmidi keyboard, and a TX216 module. So... piano keys... and two 'DX-7' tone modules...!

Are you happy with the KX-88? :)

@@ThomannMusic well, this was years ago. After that, I went through several tone modules (e.g., E-mu Proteus, Korg M3R) and drum machines, but ended up selling all of that and going 100% 'in the box'. Now I have a NI S88 and M32, a Maschine, NI Komplete 14CE and a zillion other VIs, and run all that mainly through Studio One and Ableton Live.

The D50 if you program it is a very deep and complex synth. But definetly for that stuff the software version for computers is way better.

It’s cool, but not 1300$ second hand for a 35 year old piece of equipment, I considered getting one but knew that probably wasn’t the wisest investment
