Hello and thanks again for joining us here at Merriam Pianos for another piano review. Today, we’re going to be comparing the Kawai CA58 and the Roland DP603, two instruments with quite different offerings but available for a very similar price point. We’re going to focus on both similarities and major differences, and of course, allow you to hear them played side-by-side.
If this is the first time to the Merriam Pianos channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate the support.
Tone Engine and Sound:
The DP603 takes some different pieces of technology that Roland actually implements in several of their higher priced models, such as the HP and LX lines, and squeezes it into a compact, contemporary cabinet, resulting in an instrument of pretty amazing value. Something that immediately stands out is the sheer quantity of sounds the DP603 offers, with over 300 in total.
The CA58 boasts a little more speaker power at 100 watts, fed through 2 main speakers found underneath the piano facing the ground, and 2 tweeters up along the top of the piano. The CA58 has a much smaller selection of sounds, with 42 on-board sounds, and less polyphony at 256 notes. The CA58’s Harmonic Imaging XL draws on the Shigeru Kawai EX multidimensionally sampled sample set, which really captures the dynamic sound of the Shigeru Kawai EX quite well.
Action:
The CA58 uses Kawai’s Grand Feel Compact action, which is very similar to Kawai’s original Grand Feel Action, albeit the keystick is slightly shorter. Grand Feel Compact boasts 100% wooden keys pivoting on a balance rail just like a real piano, and triple sensor technology with escapement, resulting in a very similar playing experience to that of an an acoustic grand piano. Another thing worth mentioning is the texture of the black keys, very comfortable and enjoyable to play.
The DP603 features Roland PHA50 action. This is the second best action Roland makes and can be found in several other Roland models, such as the RD2000, FP90 and certain HP series instruments. The keys are a mix of plastic and wood, and like the action in the CA58, the PHA50 has triple sensor technology and escapement. The CA58’s action seems to be slightly more sensitive in lower velocity ranges, but for certain styles of playing, the PHA50 is preferable. Both actions are ultimately really great to play, and it’s not really possible to pick a clear winner.
Piano Features:
The DP603 is cased in a slender, contemporary cabinet that takes up as little room as possible for a digital piano of this quality. It’s also available in three finishes; classic satin black, polished black and polished white. An interesting internal feature is the sheer amount of classic repertoire built right into the piano.
Conclusion:
At the end of day, these are two pianos for a similar price that ultimately offer a pretty similar quality of experience. For somebody specifically interested in an acoustic piano experience, they may gravitate more toward the CA58, due primarily to the action, SK EX sample set and 100 watts of power. That being said, for someone just getting into learning the piano, the DP603’s various play-along and educational features are probably going to stand out. Really, you can’t go wrong with either of these excellent instruments, and playing them side-by-side will definitely be the best course of action if you’re deciding between the two.
