Product Overview:
The Roland FP60 had a run of over 3 years, and was at the time, the upgrade to the Roland FP50. The new FP60X is the newest upgrade, but is actually priced the same as its predecessor. That’s a clear indicator that the upgrades aren’t going to be earth-shattering, nor as significant as they were with the FP30 to FP30X.
Piano Sound:
The FP60 uses Roland’s previous sound chip, with their SuperNATURAL sound engine, capable of 288 notes of polyphony, with a pair of 13 watt speakers.
The FP60X uses the same 26 watts of power, but it appears as though either the speakers or amplifiers have been improved. Interestingly, the polyphony has actually been dropped to 256, but Roland has included their new BMC chip here, which has allowed them to scale up the complexity of the SuperNATURAL engine. It’s not a modelled engine like the more expensive Roland instruments, but it’s about as complex as a sample-based engine could be.
Comparing the main acoustic tones side-by-side, the FP60X has more body, and more resonance. Even with the EQ settings exactly the same, the FP60X has a thicker bass register, which we think might be due to upgraded speakers Roland hasn’t disclosed. Roland’s also redesigned the touch curves, so that could have something to do with it as well.
The FP60X also features Roland’s new My Stage button, which is a series of pre-sets of different acoustic piano settings from Roland’s Piano Designer function, offering a variety of different piano tones.
In terms of non-piano tones, some electric piano tones sound significantly better on the FP60X, whereas the difference is more subtle on others. The same goes for all of the other tones as well.
Piano Action:
Roland’s brought back the PHA4 on the FP60X, which was also used in the FP60. This action is found throughout the lower half of Roland’s lineup, and is widely held as one of the top plastic actions available.
The PHA4 is a medium-weight action, has a harder keybed, features escapement, a triple sensor, as well as a texture on the keys. While this is the same action, Roland did revamp the touch curve, which does create the perception of the action feeling a little bit different here on the FP60X.
Connectivity/Other Features:
Both instruments have much of the same connectivity, such as Bluetooth MIDI and Audio, USB, the ability to record WAV, and the ability to play back files.
One major difference in terms of connectivity, is the fact that the FP60X has a USB audio interface. Roland hasn’t announced this feature which means it isn’t officially an supported feature as of yet.
The FP60X also brings a mic input and volume slider that was not present on the FP60.
The FP60X also has a forced pairing option for Bluetooth, which streamlines the process from the FP60.
Summary:
Are there major differences between these two instruments? Not really, but there are some upgrades that some users will find quite meaningful, such as the new chip set, mic input, and USB audio interface.
