Hi, It depends on how seriously you want to take learning the synth. If you think it will be longer term get this one definitely. If not perhaps try the MicroKorg or Waldorf Blofeld.

A workstation would allow you to layer different elements of a song and give you greater control over sequencing. Most keyboards will feature a split function allowing you to play two different sounds with you right and left hand. The Korg M50 may be worth looking at…

You might notice, the Blofeld aswell as the MicroKorg are virtual analog synthesizers. The Juno is a Workstation/Rom based Synth. Hard to compare, they aim at 2 different worlds.

Hi, 2nd Hand is not a bad place to start at all. If you take precautions and make sure it is in very good condition (at least as advertised) then you may actually be able to get more keyboard for your money than buying new.

This is a great "beginners" keyboard. It's got some really decent sounds & you can pick one up for around $250 on Ebay. It's a budget keyboard, but it doesn't have budget sounds. It's also really great for a 2nd/backup gigging keyboard. It's cheap, smallish, lightweight, etc. If you're playing out at bars & you don't want to expose a $3,500 - $4,000 keyboard to a bunch of drunks (who won't be able to tell the different between a Juno-D & a Fantom G anyway) then the Juno-D is perfect.

Hi The sounds from this synth come from onboard - you do not need any other hardware to trigger sounds. However, you will need an external amplifier to be able to hear yourself playing it.

It is not a half ass synth (a little limited yes.., but not half ass. It's a BUDGET synth). The current Juno line does EXACTLY what the ENTIRE Juno series was designed to do. It provides a very cost effective synth for musican's based on where we are TODAY with modern synths and the types of sounds you find on them TODAY. You CAN'T compare this to the SH-201 because one is a VA synth and the other a "Rompler". They're two totally different keyboards designed for different applications.

Hi, As the keyboard has MIDI out you could connect it to an external soudn module (such as the Nord Rack) and control those sounds with this keyboard. The keyboard cannot support vstis, they are a computer format.
@gear4musicguitars

Hi, If I understand you correctly then you want to use the arpeggiator to output a midi signal whilst using the synthesis engine on the Juno? If so then I'm afraid you can't do that with this synth. You could always pre-program a midi part or generate an arpeggio on Ableton which you can then send to different instruments. Alternatively you can use the 16 part midi sequencer on the Juno to build up backing tracks that way. Hope that helps

I've connected a midi usb keyboard to a Juno D because there are several dead keys on the Juno. Everything works fine..plays performances, patches, knobs affect the output sound...but when I select the [chord memory] or [arpeggio/phrase] button the sound is unaffected. This was the main incentive for the setup as I really like playing around with the [chord memory] or [arpeggio/phrase] buttons. However they still work when I play the faulty Juno keyboard. What settings do I need to make if any? Thanks Dave

The Juno D is way more synth than the MM6. You get more poly and more synth power. The MM6 is a PSR arranger keyboard pretending to be a Motif. Its patterns are really styles. The MM6 has some nice sounds, but is VERY limited. It only has 32 note poly and probably half the synth power of the Juno-D. The Juno is built better too. The MM6 is more a preset machine than a synth because the patch editing is so basic. I don't think the MM6 is even capable of producing a mono patch and no portamento.
