this is one of the most powerful and lush sounding synths ever created. i use to have 3 of these still have one of my original and programmer from the 80's ..oh my ..this is the synth you keep next to your bed even when you're 64..there's nothing this synth can't emulate. it has unique settings no other synth has... this is the only synth that scare my Waldorf micro wave 1 and the Yamaha FM boys.

I bought 2 new, Love it but would never call it anywhere near the most lush. It's advantages are extremely tight envelopes and tight midi, great expressiveness with touch sensitivity and dynamics.

This is definitely an awesome sounding demo. Of all things, it is making me a little more stoked to get on my NKS70. I know that they are different animals, but I'm still invigorated in that direction anyway.

Great synth....I have a REV 4....not the warmest machine but VERY versatile...but just love the hybrid sounds...like an analog FM synth...Great basses, plucks (good envelopes for being software from the mid 80´s)...leads and pianos thanks to being velocity sensitive. This one will never leave my rack :)

Exactly; one of the best analog digital hybrids during the last days of analog, along with prophet vs and ppg. Noticeably tighter envelopes and midi that vintage analog ie madonnas 2,3 albums

Wow, I'm jealous! I always admired Roland JX-10/ MKS80, back in 1986. I would love to play around with the module version. I briefly owned JX-8P, but the Super Jupiter is what I really like. If I have a choice of Roland vintage synths, I would go for the Super Jupiter and D-50 or D-550 module...... Cheers, Power DX7.

Yes the MKS80 is great. I didn't like at first when I got it but now I use it all the time. You just have to program it right.

I'm also interested in MKS-70 which is actually the module version of the JX-10 (2xJX-8P and more!!). That not as expensive as the MKS-80!!!!

@gridsleep Many other owners & synth experts have pointed out that the MKS-80 does not use the same combination of oscillators & filters as the Jupiter 8. It has some components in common with the Jupiter 6, and some components in common with the Jupiter 8. It can create some sounds that are quite similar to the Jupiter 8, but the MKS-80 has its own character. IMHO, Roland should not have used the name "Super Jupiter"...it is a bit misleading. Also, the Rev.5 version had different components than the Rev.3/4 versions. The Rev.5 has a lower noise floor & a sound that is more smooth & less aggressive. Some people consider the Rev.4 sound more desireable, and it is harder to find & more expensive.
@maccagrabme

@@derekbaker3279 The rev 4 board at least is pretty much identical to a Jup 6 one, the service manual even refers to it as a Jup 6 daughterboard. Only part that's similar to the Jup 8 that I know if is the filter but even that is configured differently.
@ohheyitskevinc

Rev 4 definitely. I have this and the MPG-80 programmer (which you really need to have as it’s a pita to program without) and would like some kind of hardware or software backup so I can preserve the original. Just not sure if Roland are over the whole Aria and Boutique stuff now. Maybe Roland cloud.. you never know. It’s close to a Jupiter 6 btw. I have a System 8 with the Jupiter 8, Juno-106 and JX-3P plug outs and have messed around with the Jupiter X too and none come close to this.

Could (m)any of these sounds be re-created on my soon-to-arrive MKS70?
@roboticrealm
4 жыл бұрын
Maybe. MKS-70/JX-10 has quite a different sound than this. However, this is Rev 5 of the MKS-80, and it has the same filter as JX-8P and JX-10(?) so that makes it closer soundwise than the Rev 4. And, these are all Roland synths from the same era so....it all comes down to your programming skills, I believe. My own JX-8P sounds quite different to my MKS-80 but....well, it's difficult to answer this question.

I'm sorry but I can't send sysex with my MKS-80. It's been a problem ever since I got it and noone has been able to help me determine exactly what's wrong (I've contacted quite a few people over the years about this), but I think it has something to do with the internal memory since I can only store my sounds on my memory cartridge.

Thank you so much for the offer to help me. But since I see you live in the US, I feel that I don't dare to send my MKS-80 that far, since I don't want to risk damaging it, and it's the most expensive synth I own at the moment.

Hi, I've been looking for the factory patches for the MKS-80. Not the internal ones, I have those. I'm looking for the Cassette/Cartridge A/B patches. Also the names of patches/tones. I would really appreciate if you can share them if you have them. Thnx a lot.
