Nice review! Another option for those looking for the Juno sound in a small form factor is the Dreadbox Nymphes. I have one and to my ears, it sounds great. It has fully analog VCOs (as opposed to the JU-06A digital signal path), filters, and VCA. This thing sounds alive, rich, and just unstable enough. The drawback is that it's not the easiest to use. It requires some awkward menu diving and the utilization of a "shift" button. But in terms of RAW sound, it's great. Throw a chorus on it and you have yourself a Juno. Personally, I'm selling it because I picked up a Sequential Take 5 but it's still a beast for the price.

I’ve seen +30 vids on the ju 06a, your vid is def the best one. I’m definitivemy convinced (and whith beautifful 80’s sounds i look for that you played). Just hope i can connect my Push I (can’t do without scales) thas has an external midi USB A.. Thank you very much. Smart demo. In french : « chapeau bas » :) ;)

Press long MANUAL, then choose 6 for MIDI SYNC of the LFO. You can get from 0.5 to crazy lenghts of BPM. It changed my view on this synth ;) And before this, long-press ARP --> CLK settings (4 I think?) and set to USB.

Hi Dan, thanks very much for this top review. As a previous Juno 60 owner I was really happy to see Roland brining these as you say accessible units to the market. My only gripe is that Roland decided to skimp on polyphony with the JU06A only being 4 note polyphonic. A real shame given the 6 in the Juno 6 and 60 referred to the 6 note polyphony the originals came with! Maybe the JU04A name would not have hit the mark… The lack of modulation and pitch bend functions is also for me a shame and sure anyone wanting the mini hardware would have forked out an extra 50 quid or so and maybe 100 for 6 notes… The sampling direct into Logic you mention sounds like a good workaround to get the right amount of polyphony but I feel this sort of defeats the object of having the hardware at your fingertips? I have been using the Roland VST version of the Juno 60 for a good while now and personally I would suggest this as a better way to anyone looking for Juno sounds in a DAW environment. It is impossible for the human ear to tell this apart from the JU06A. I love the joy you find in creating sounds from scratch on your unit as it really reminded me of the pure joy I had when I got my 60 way back in the 80’s. I can see why it takes center stage in your setup. It does look lovely too…Cheers!

Yeah, but even in the 80s Roland's names started getting weird. The JX-3P and JX-8P were both 6 note polyphonic. The D-50 didn't have 50 notes of polyphony, and who knows what the RD-1000 name was about? And while I'm at it, why did most of the rack versions of their mid 80s synths and digital pianos have the MKS prefix in their name? The TB-303? Named after a rifle calibre perhaps?!

It certainly sounds very nice to me. Does it sound better on a track (as opposed to how good it seems to sound when playing with it) than a similar soft synth? I doubt it; but it is really about the process and how that can lead you to places you might not have gone. I'm glad you find it inspiring. A big attraction for me would be recording audio of a performance, with imperfections, retakes, maybe comping maybe not. Composing is great, but making music is also about performance. Having said that, I expect you can just play this with midi, and so edit midi just as with a virtual instrument, if you needed to. Thanks for the review!

TAL also sells a Juno on iPad and as a VST, the TAL UNO-LX. It is the business, I get nostalgia vibes (I used to own a 106). The Model 84 from Softube is also good, but only available as a VST.

Hi Dan, I watched lots of your videos but there are 2 things I don't understand yet... First is how to score dialogue? And second how to adjust my score after editor changed the scene duration? How to adapt my score to the new edit? seems very difficult..

Can I disagree with ur conclusion 😀....I think the Roland boutique Juno encourages me to make my own sounds more than the VST version (I have Roland cloud) my own sounds inspires me more. Agree VST is faster for work flow which is good if ur a busy composer. I'm just a hobbyist. I also have the JX08 this is great ... maybe better than the JU06A ?

Question: I agree on the "historical-limitations-to-make-as-it-was-the-real-thing" but these limitations have to match with this real-thing. Why 4 voices of polyphony as the J6 (I own one) , the J60 and the J106 had 6? When you play simple 3-fingers-chords with some release it can be an issue. With 6 voices you could have the hope to play something which sounds like the original. And who wouldn't want to play chords with some release on a Juno 6? Question #2: What about the self resonating LPF + keytracking in order to get an "other oscilator"? (definitely useful for "electric organ" type sounds)

I love mine, purists can have their noisy chorus. 🤨 Only quibble with this box is I wish the range option buttons were inverted, with 4 on top and 16 on bottom.

Could someone please explain why one should pay 350 for this. You could get a software emulation of the juno way cheaper then this. Is it the haptic feedback of the hardware? In this case I would use my own faders and my midi keyboard because everything is possible with automation. Or is it really the sound? For me, this is a serious question. What makes people spend more money on hardware when there are cheaper and more convenient software alternatives?
@lundsweden

It's cute. It has Roland's name on it. It's more fun/inspiring to play its dedicated sliders. But yeah great VST alternatives are available, even one available on the iPad (TAL UNO-LX).

What a waste going for four voice instead of six. Why even bother at that point? What was the excuse on their part? Like this could’ve been PERFECT but they left out that one part (well two parts actually heh). Great video though as always!! Thanks!

I understand the fun portability aspect of this, but don't really grasp the intended market here. There are plenty of ipad synth apps that are infinitely more comprehensive and portable... and if you want to use the sounds in a DAW, then just use plugins. I don't get it.

Hi Dan. A bit of background about me. I am a 45 year old musician with a 14 year old autistic daughter. I just wanted to let you know that if you don’t publicly support Christian Henson then I will be unfollowing you forever. Imagine you are South Africa, and it’s 1983. You don’t have to support Apartheid, it’s up to you. Believe me this isn’t a threat, it is a promise you will be my enemy if you don’t support Christian. He needs your public support right now. Your choice. If you support him, I promise to buy everything you ever release. Private messages to him of support are no good. Imagine you being a parent. You will be one day. Parents want to protect children.

@@DanKeenMusic Yes I’ll unsubscribe. I know I’m asking a lot from you. I think of us living in 1932 Germany, and you want to not loose your job and you think that everything will go fine if you just keep your head down. Or you are perhaps like a white pardon from England who goes on holiday to South Africa in 1982. I know the argument “I can’t make a difference” but it is really about what you stand for. First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out- Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me-and there was no one left to speak for me.
