"it would be great if you could pick me up" 😂😂 The amount of times I've had conversations like this... I would've peaced out within the first 3 minutes. If they told me they're also looking for other DPs I would've told them I'm also ironically looking for clients who pay proper rates. Awesome video!!

This is what happens when I hit a slow season, I entertain these calls longer than I should :)

I really liked this video . For people who are past the typical gear video or I want to buy another camera , this video shows the reality of the industry and shows what to expect .

Marcos, greeting from another guy in the Bay Area. Serendipitous that I was browsing some of my subscribed channels and found this video since this week I went through the exact scenario you did. Budget was $1000 and I offered exactly what you did in the first round. Fundamentally that was the end of the conversation. Guessing the guy that bid $900 got the job - good luck to them ;-)

Thank you for this video, Marcos, negotiating is quite tricky for money is involved. I get a ton of emails about companies wanting to collaborate with me. I ask them for a phone call, and they quickly respond or don't respond. Many smaller companies want me to review their products on my channels and only want to correspond via email - ugh!

It's great to listen to other people negotiating as you always pick up something to use in the following conversation. When they are being difficult and don't want to give me a budget I always come back with "We can do small productions as well as big productions so depending on your budget what would you be looking at?" I find that works :)

Do you ever throw out numbers first over the phone if they are unwilling to share a budget?

I didn't get into filmmaking to learn how to negotiate, but it is a huge part of it. I would love to hear or see how other people carry this conversation to see how I can improve.

I closed two clients for $48K/year so that's $8K/month so I know a thing or two about sales and creating video content. The deliverables were social media content, onboarding videos and KZitem videos. The problem with this role play (and I'm sure most of your calls) is that you focus too much on the features and not the benefits/outcomes. For example, airlines don't sell you on seats. They don't sell you on the plane. They don't sell you on the food. They sell you on the destination. They sell you on the memories and experiences you're gonna have with family/friends. But you only get those things by buying a plane ticket. Selling video production is the same thing. Don't sell them on the videos, gears, 4K videos etc. Sell them on what exactly the videos will do for their business or personal life.

Congratulations on closing those deals. I see what you are saying, but the Value-based pricing approach doesn't work well with every client. It works well with top-level decision-makers. However, when you are talking to Agency Representatives, who are given a budget, they are not going to entertain a long discussion about what it will do for the company business.

Really ueful this video. I don't do video production, I do design and motion graphics, but I find this is very handy because in essence it's the same. They put you on the spot sometimes and it's very hard to negotiate if you don't know you value. I found it was interesting the approach of quoting on the spot or not, and also pricing for value. Pricing for value some mates do that, but indeed it's difficult because it might be seen as you are overcharging or taking advantage. However, you cannot charge the same for a video on a small store than a multinational company in different stores. It's totally different. However you are the same professional and aiming for good quality. I guess then, you would need to niche yourself based on what you want to do and your business model. So in this case, if you want a minimum of x, you just aim for clients that can provide that. Obviously, you need to have to be able to be in that position, but it's a matter of saving and little by little getting there. Looking forward to see more content like that! thank you learning a lot with your video editing videos :)

Totally sucks to lose out on the job but you’re definitely much better off without a headache client like that. If he treated you like that in your initial conversation it’s probably not a job you’d like your name attached to anyways. Good job staging your ground Marcos!

One more thing, the quality of the short documentaries they created wasn't great - so I didn't feel bad passing this up.

@@MarcosRochaTV probably because they typically pay $1k for their video 🤣. When he said that’s what they normally pay you could have said and that’s why your videos look the way they do 😂🤣

Very interesting conversation, you made a good decision. $1k a day is nice. I have all the gear but I'm not allowed to work freelance here, can only earn from adsense 😄
