The fact that “buy thousands of dollars in other watches from your AD to show you’re ‘serious’ about buying the Rolex” is common advice just sums up the frustration everyone has with the system perfectly. It’s not that you’re showing seriousness, it’s that the AD is using the Rolex system to gain more profit. But your advice is good, Bruce. Plenty of other fish-er watches in the sea. Many are quite, quite good.

@@BruceWilliams Nope you’re all good Bruce. While I don’t like the idea of having to purchase other watches to get a Rolex, that’s the reality we live in for many ADs. So if that’s reality, there’s a way to go about it in a logical manner, and that’s *if* you’re buying watch(es) new, you might as well buy them at a single dealer to foster that relationship.
@thomasa.243

One thing I don't understand about Rolex is that they are telling us that they sell around 1 Million watches per year to their authorized dealers. Last time I checked, this is around 4 1/2 times more than Omega. Yet, you are able to easily buy an Omega (maybe you have to wait a few weeks for specific models but that is ok). Where are the 1 Million Rolex watches? When I have achieved a milestone in life, before even knowing about watches, I thought about buying a Rolex. That (and Omega) was the watch for life achievements, I thought. Went to the AD with my saved money and they laughed at me. "Ok", I thought, "when you don't want to have my money, I go to the AD across the street." (Big city) When I was there, they told me "we don't sell to nobodys." I was standing there, yet I was a nobody. Ok, anyways, I looked online. For that price, not my preferred method, but, you know, maybe I could make a deal. As you might expect, also that did not go well. Then I looked around and bought a different watch. The quartz Grand Seiko, one of the simpler models. I even negotiated a good deal 🙈. But this experience made me not the greatest fan of Rolex and I am no longer interested in their catalog. Potential customer lost, I say...

Being treated in such a way is very disrespectful, regardless if it is about a luxury product or a cheap one. Such a store would never see me again. There are plenty of opportunities out there to spend your hard earned money. Before buying my first expensive watch in 2008 I looked at Rolex but I didn't feel attracted to them. I went for an Omega SMP instead and had a very pleasant buying expperience in my local Omega Boutique. I know Kenneth B was harsh about harm coming to the Pepsi watches (not the owners). However, he was ranting about many of us feeling the same frustrations with the process of obtaining the Pepsi or Batman. Many of us never get a call being told by the AD that it is "supply and demand", yet automagically there are thousands of the GMTs at any one time on the grey market. The difference is that most of us just keep it too ourselves.

I don't understand why do many people get upset about not having a Rolex, for what the grey market is asking for some of the more desirable models you could get some seriously high horology. For the price of a sub (grey), you could get into Blancpain, Ulysses Nardin and Zenith just to name a few.

I put my name on a “list” once and decided afterward to go with Omega. To each their own, and I’m certainly happy for those that get the Rolex they’ve always wanted - but the whole process leaves a bad taste in my mouth and encourages me to look elsewhere. Great video and good advice, Bruce! To me, the main variables here are - desire and disposable income. The most distraught people seem to have very high desire but low disposable income. People vary, but it’s far from certain that a Rolex substitute will satisfy the desire component. To be sure, most of the disposable income will be gone. Breitling’s, Omega’s, GS, etc. aren’t cheap. The obvious risk is that you’ve spent most of your money on a watch that you like but don’t love, but still burn for that GMT2 - the worst position b/c you’ve got the same high desire but significantly less disposable income. I just don’t think there’s any way around this one…either find a way to decrease your desire, or earn some more money.

Rolex is smart for raising prices and artificially withholding production. You don't want to flood the market with watches. If you do, they become too common and they lose their value. The actual real value of a Rolex is about 10% of the retail price. That's how much the raw materials are to build the watch, which a $40 watch is just as good. What Rolex is selling is swag. A watch in itself is useless. The most accurate time in on your cell phone. So hobbiests....stop complaining! If you want swag, it is not meant to be easy to get. In order to have bragging rights, you need to have something that most people cannot get. A Lambo, a $100K diamond ring....a Stefano $5K suit....a Rolex. Swag!!!!

He had panic attacks, cried out of no where, the last time I visit him his room was a complete mess, and all he did was surf the net on the computer. He was a pretty normal guy and actually pretty smart and funny until his 40s came by. He started to scream at his family and friends if he disagree with them at all. He goes from zero to 11. I'm not a short guy and he was. I said short people can knock out people too. We got into a screaming match about it and he started talking about physics. Of course his family and friends (including myself) left him since nobody will hang out a internet troll in real life. It is also why there seemed so many internet troll online than real life. They have no friends, no job, or no family and all they do is harassing people online and that all they do. I visited him and he was by himself and I sang "Hurt" by Jonny Cash and he ran to the restroom and started crying. He had a guitar hanging around. He asked me to leave afterwards. I tried to help him since he was an old friend, but he was so angry and started calling me a loser. People like these project.

Grey market pricing has a lot to do with why ADs aren’t selling watches to ‘unknowns’. Imagine Joe Schmoe walking into an AD and buying a Pepsi or a Daytona at retail just to flip it for several thousand more than what he paid for. If I was an AD, I’d do my best to weed out these types of ‘customers’. It’s part of the game you have to play and yeah it sucks for many of us wanting to get into the brand, but there’s no other way around this. With that said, and like many others have mentioned, plenty of other great brands out there with some amazing offerings.
