Video tutorial of the Rolled Rib (or Column Rib) Stitch.
This is a beautiful variation of the rib stitch! It provides a fabric that lays flat. As with any rib stitch, it scrunches up a little but has a great stretch and would work well as the base of a sweater/vest or even for as a scarf or a hat. The video and the first pattern below shows how to knit the stitch in the flat. I have also provided directions for knitting this stitch in the round.
Stitch pattern (stitch is worked on a multiple of 3 sts + 1; eg, 19, 22, 25, 28, etc); pattern is a 2-row repeat; level: advanced beginner or intermediate).
Abbreviations: K=knit; P=purl; SL1WYIB=slip 1 stitch purlwise with the yarn in the back; st=stitch; YF=yarn forward.
Cast on a multiple of 3 sts +1 using any cast-on method of your choice (I typically use the long-tail cast-on method; video link to that technique is below). You can use regular needles; you don’t need double-pointed needles; I like using them for my demos (:
Pattern (to knit in the flat, as shown in video):
Row 1 (wrong side): *K1, P2. Repeat from * to the last st, then K1.
Row 2 (right side):: *P1, Sl1WYIB, K1, pass the slipped st over the 2 sts. Repeat from * to the last st, then P1.
Repeat Rows 1-2 for the pattern. When done knitting, cast off using regular bind off or any bind-off method of your choice. No blocking needed.
To knit the pattern in the round (eg, for a hat):
Cast on a multiple of 3 sts (eg, 18, 21, 24, etc)
Row 1 (wrong side): *K2, P1. Repeat from * to the last st.
Row 2 (right side):: *P1, Sl1WYIB, K1, pass the slipped st over the 2 sts. Repeat from * to the last st.
Repeat Rows 1-2 for the pattern.
