Listening to this album was an emotional experience because it draws such hard contrast with the current music scene. We of the Boomers and GenX were spoiled by living our youth during a cultural zenith when fantastic music was coming out all the time, year after year...never knowing how bad it could get. Yeah, the digital makes for a clean production sheen, but it hit me long ago that analog is the ultimate state of digital - and everything in-between is just a filter, so... These are 80 year old musicians who have already entertained the world for 6 decades - and if this is their final contribution, it's a great gift. There's a genuine sense of joy and freedom in the tracks that we used to hear coming over our radios. I can even go as far as agreeing with all the criticisms and still say the enthusiasm and character and songwriting is there - it's a FUN listen that gladly shares it's ebulliance from beginning to end. I think some of these tracks are going to be future classics that people will be enjoying years from now 🤘

Like others, listening to Hackney Diamonds was an emotional journey. My father just died - 30-9 - and I'm sure he would love this record. So, it feels like I'm listening to this record for us both. To me, Hackney Diamonds is the best Stones album since Black and Blue. A 5 star record in my book. According to what I've heard, they recorded many more songs, so that means another record might be possible. Considering how good they are in these times, I deeply hope Hackney Diamonds will at least be followed by one last album. And if not, the Stones went with a bigger bang than we could hope for. ~Marjet

Top 10 album of the year for me! "Sweet Sounds of Heaven" is such a good blues-gospel song I had to check it wasn't a cover. It really has the conviction to be a blues standard. It feels like a song written for BB King even though he's been gone for quite awhile. I liked A Bigger Bang but this is much more concise and focused; the album really flows. What really blew me away was the songwriting and lyrics. The life affirming lyrics of "Whole Wide World" that Robert cited - absolutely amazing and it just means more hearing it from the Stones. "Dreamy Skies" is a big highlight as well because there is a earnest reflection about being weary of the technology and chaos of today's world. It feels like Mick and Keith are not just opining but also warning us a bit about the future. "Angry" is a good opener given the recurring theme in some of the songs on the album deal with romantic relationship struggles and chaos (also explaining the album cover) and it reaches a climax when it culminates with the pensive and haunting "Tell Me Straight". Mick's vocal talent is still superb and beyond that, he has the wisdom of what to say and how to deliver it, whether it's the devil-may-care material of "Live By The Sword" or the superb performance on "Dreamy Skies" I already mentioned. This is an inspired album, and I'm tempted to say at this point if there is anyone left out there who still doesn't label the Stones as the greatest rock band of all time, I'd consider them for an asylum visit.

The album dropped into my I-tunes library on Friday morning and I love it. It's taken me back to when I bought my first Stones album of new material as a fan, and that was Tattoo You way back in '81. It has given me that same buzz, (and I've been listening to it most of today at work) I love all of it, but the standout song for me is Bite My Head Off, such a strong rocker, so punk and Macca's on there really going for it on Fuzz Bass. It reminds me of classic 70's Stones (for me that's my favourite era of the Stones) If this is their last album, they've done themselves proud, and what a way to go out with Charlie and Bill on there as well.

It has that very cool acoustic vibe that was on my favorite Stones album "Beggars Banquet". And I think everyone agrees "Sweet Sounds of Heaven" is a stone cold classic that is about as good as anything they've ever done. That said, most of this album is just kick ass rock and roll. My thoughts were very similar in many ways to yours. Before elaborating I want to mention that I got my first Rolling Stones album when I was 9 years old - Hot Rocks (I’m 60 now), and they have been my favorite band ever since. So, I was was extremely excited when I heard they were releasing a new album. My thoughts? Overall I absolutely love it! I really love the production. I read somewhere recently some commentary that a lot of old Stones records were produced with Mick’s vocals very forward and some of the instrumentation more muted. Here, I feel like I can really hear Keith and Ronnie’s guitars and their individual licks very clearly, and I absolutely love it! With respect to the songs themselves, my personal favorite is Close to You. The riff is quite catchy and the combo of that riff with the sax solo gives me goosebumps and reminds me of their 1970’s heyday with Bobby Keys. My second favorite is Whole Wide World, which kind of reminds me a little of the Clash, which is interesting, because I never really liked the Clash, but I love the Stones taking on a sort of a very British, working man’s rough and gritty song. Working backwards, I also immediately thought “Sex Pistols punk” when I heard Bite my Head Off!” I love the lyrics and the guitar work on this. I won’t comment on every song, but I will also say I immediately thought of the Some Girls album when I heard “Mess it Up.” Very much a disco type dance track, which not at all my go to for the Stones, but at the same time, I can appreciate it more I’m the context of the overall album, which to me, seems to have an overall nostalgic walk through the years of Stones music to me, albeit with very modern production and sound. Maybe it’s just me feeling nostalgic and never wanting the Stones journey to ever end. I am so happy about this album and will savoring every track on it, specially because we don’t know if it will be their last.

Really appreciate your style of commentary and analysis of the album. I will take you up on your offer to break the album down song by song. As I stated under your original review of Angry, I really like the song, particularly Keith's bass playing- might be the first Stones turn that rattles the car and the outro chorus. Things I don't like- the first refrain kind of breaks up the tune's flow and Mick oversings in some parts of the outro- what's up with the pills and Brazil line? And the video- while I do enjoy curvaceous women, take the chick out and focus on the classic billboard scenes. Seriously, if anyone here knows the producer Andrew Watt, pass this on to him and maybe they can put a revised version on a future release. Angry could be made into a true classic tune (not just the album's first single) with some changes. First, around the two-minute mark there is a short bass/piano break- extend the bass/piano interchange, then lead into the solo (which is a rather nice one). Second, extend the chorus a bit more instead of abruptly cutting it off. The chorus is a great singalong, milk it for more. The result would be a 5:30 mini-anthem. The second tune Get Close is nice. And I literally mean nice, particularly the refrain. You mentioned the word "jubilance" as not being a trait of Stones music. This one is jubilant. Drum intro. Great guitar interchange as only Keith and Ronnie can do. As it approaches the 2:00 minute mark it starts picking up force as great Stones tunes do, then into the sax solo preceded by some great percussion (not Bobby Keys, but nevertheless superbly flows with the tune and returns to the refrain). The outro rivals that of Angry's in producing that positive singalong feel. Will get back with the other tunes. Depending on You is next. So far this album is 2 for 2. What a joy! If you guys are ever in the Philly area, let's meet up.

I'm digging this latest album by the Stones! It contains brilliant musicianship, concepts, arrangements, compositions, and production. My favorite tracks are: BITE MY HEAD OFF, WHOLE WIDE WORLD, SWEET SOUNDS OF HEAVEN, and ROLLING STONES BLUES. However, all of the songs on this album are solid because of how they flow conceptually as an album. If this is their final studio album as a band, ROLLING STONES BLUES is the absolute best closing because it highlights their inspirations as a band and how they got their name!

Excellent review of Hackney Diamonds - pretty much agree with all your opinions on the tracks. I think "Sweet Sounds of Heaven" and "Live by the Sword" are the two best tracks by far. I agree that "Mess It Up" and "Driving Me Too Hard" are the weakest tracks, though they're not that bad. The chorus of "Mess It Up" is too much like mediocre contemporary pop. Re "Bite My Head Off", I also thought it sounded like the Sex Pistols when I first heard it. And "Whole Wide World" sounds very Franz Ferdinand-ish. Won't have it until Monday. Apparently, no same day delivery as release with preorder (Sept 6) guarantee from Amazon. I'm glad to have both of your perspectives on each song. With so many guest stars I would not put this album in the same category as any earlier Stones records, especially with Charlie only being on two tracks. Charlie and Bill are guests in a band they used to be members of, which I think is weird. Metamorphosis was sort of a hybrid album for a Stones '70s release. Except on that record, I don't think Keith was on every track - only Mick.

The 3rd tune- Depending on You. Guess we could call this a light country ballad. Def grows on you. Pleasant, soothing. Lyrically my favorite tune on the album. The disappointment, depression in contrast to the exuberant love attraction in Get Close. The acoustic guitar intro reminds me of the intro to a Zep tune, but I can't think of the name. Love what I call the "goo-goo" back-up vocals in the outro, reminds me of late '70-'80's albums. Just loving the outros in each of the first 3 tunes, sometimes I wish they would go on forever. Not at all (to me) like modern commercial country as you described. Difference of opinion for sure. At first, great Album, i love it. What a great gift in this bad times, thanks Rolling Stones, thanks very much for this great album and for all the great music and many stunning masterpieces during my whole life. Love you guys, best band ever❤. Now my rating and two critic points: 0 for Mess It Up ❤ Angry ❤❤ Get It Close ❤❤ Depending On You ❤❤ Whole Wide World ❤❤❤ all the others ❤❤❤ and a half for Sweet Sounds Of Heaven Why not four ❤? I will try to explain my opinion: Lady Gaga is a great singer, but she doesn't have the right vocal timbre for this beautiful song. She doesn't have the gospel and soul voice that could make this song a masterpiece. Why the hell wasn't this song recorded with Lisa Fischer? Especially the female solo part at the end reveals the vocal difference. Gaga's voice is more like a screaming cat, while Lisa's warm soul voice is sorely missing here. Compare Gimme Shelter live Lisa vs Gaga. Or compare Merry Clayton's brilliant studio version, also one of the best gospel and soul voices. Therefore only 3,5 ❤. With Lisas voice I would give at least 4 or 5❤ for a masterpiece. Second critic point: Rolling Stone Blues: Much too short. This really amazing Blues number around needs at least 5 min or even more length..

As a Stones fan and at times an ADDICT since 1965 I have to say I like it…do I think it stands anywhere in the Top 5 STONES albums..NO. To me it’s way more VOODOO LOUNGE than say Beggars Banquet through Exile…the classic run of albums. I hear a lot of pro. Tools tricks in here but. NOT to a terrible level…it just does not have that space and presence of the 60’s- 70’s band records. That is unavoidable..YOU CAN’t live in the past. On the whole it’s a very cool , great listen, no classic songs for me that would go in the STONES top 25 ever . My favorites after two listens LIVE BY THE SWORD and SWEET SOUNDS OF HEAVEN. 4th song- Bite My Head Off- like everyone else, Sex Pistols comes immediately to mind, in particular the song Liar. Would like to know Johnny Rotten's take on the tune. Am sure Sid Vicious would approve of Paul's bass work. Would love to have seen McCartney performing this in the studio- sounds like they were having such a blast. A wall of high energy. Mick's vocals just letting loose, how does he sustain it?- must say that I like hearing him curse like a real punk. An abrupt ending, I think they could have drug it out a bit more, but the frenetic pace is probably too exhausting. This is a tune you could crank up at a party with everybody banging their head and slam dancing. So far the album is 4 for 4- it has the standard eclectic mix of styles- rock, country, and punk that only the Stones could pull off.

You all did a great review. A few other reviewers popped up and I just cannot listen to them or even make it through 5 minutes of their ( trying to think of a nicer way to say BS) OK POMPOUS droning on. TJR & Robert are authentic.

I was also on the fence with Mess it Up but after repeated listens I started to look forward to hearing it. My most recent listen I had a smile from ear to ear listening to Jagger sing about getting his codes stolen, he's just having a blast with a lighthearted tune. Great commentary, gentlemen. I'm a happy fan!!

I love it, but I love the Stones to death!!!!!! I have seen them 3 times--from 1981 to present!!! I saw a one-on-one interview with Mick on YouBoob with some Canadian podcaster. Mick stated---his own words from his mouth--when asked about another album after Hackney Diamonds, "We're 3/4 the way through recording the next album!" YASSSSS!!!!! It's not over!!!! So expect another one, cross your fingers all goes well and it happens!! I purchased and down loaded this album immediately!!!!

The best news is that this could have been a double album but they basically went with what they finished first. They've already said that a follow up is coming and is already three fourths finished and both Mick and producer Andrew Watt said that people may end up liking songs on the next one even more because people have different tastes so it's quite possible that the next one might be even better! In order to meet their self imposed deadline they went with the finished or almost finished ones first. My own opinion is that it's the best one since Tattoo You but not certainly anywhere near as good as that but far better than anything since! 8 of the 12 songs are good with 4 of those being great but no actual new classics in my opinion, and that was probably a bit too much to expect anyway!

Too bad the MP3 download doesn't give you any information about who is playing on each track. Daryl Jones isn't on this album at all. The choruses on the album are very contemporary sounding. I love the Keith song "Tell Me Straight". I also really like "Mess It Up", which is maybe the most modern-pop sounding song on the album. The guitars kick ass on Hackney Diamonds. Overall I'd give it a 8.5/10. I can see them playing a lot of these songs live. The guitar riff on "Whole Wide World" is almost a carbon copy of the riff from Iggy Pop's song "Five Foot One".

Good catch on the Iggy Pop song. I doubt the Stones have ever heard that one. It didn’t sell at all but I bought it when it was eventually released in the US and love the album New Values

I’ve listened to this album at least 10 times now just to make sure. Make sure of what? Making sure that the album is as good as I think it is. Well? Is it? Yes it is! As time goes by this album will stand up to repeated listening. I really like the pacing as well. A 48 minute album that goes by in a flash. We can nitpick all we want. I’m leaning towards the fact that these Stones songs are very strong. Enjoy….easy to do!

I agree with a little more roughness / less sheen in the mix - but it IS a great album right? Reminds me of SOME GIRLS in many respects. In that same idea I could have used cover art that is a bit more rough too - it's trying to be too modern - a more rough looking 70's type album cover would have looked alot cooler. The guitars and energy on this indeed is very Stonsey and every song is really melodic and memorable. If you have a good listen to 'Sweet Sound of Heaven' (especially the chorus bit) it is VERY reminiscent of 'Tuesday's Gone' by Skynyrd. Just an observation. I love this album and will return to it for sure - it's a proper Stones record that indeed only adds to their legend. Inspired stuff.

I appreciate they went with a modern sound and cover since it's no longer the 70s but is now the 20s. Jagger has never been one to live in the past
@davescryptodays1441

@@peterberg8417 yeah I get that, but on an album that is an updated 70's sound, with many Stones touchtone sounds, a rougher looking cover would be more representative. The cover to me looks too superficial, trying to be modern but it's too over the top idigital, not enoough tough, classy looking stones.

I don’t like to say this; but for as cool as the recording sounds, and they all sound great individually, I just don’t dig the style of their songwriting anymore. Every song sounds so “deliberate”. They don’t write songs that feel rock n roll driven anymore. Every track has a moment where I picture Mick saying “where is the hook?” With Steve Jordan on drums (instead of that beautiful Charlie style and sound) it feels like a Mick solo album featuring Keith and Ron. I wanted to be surprised and I wasn’t. I wanted to love it and I don’t.

It’s better than A Bigger Bang for sure! I bought Goats Head Soup on its release in 73 so I’ve been with them almost all the way. I just appreciate it that 80 year old guys can still do a respectful job. I know I couldn’t and I’m a bit younger then they are!

@@flyingburritobro68 I understand why people are excited. I’ve been a fan since ‘78 and saw them on the ‘81 tour. I’ve seen them 15 times since then. I’m a recording artist and producer myself and I love their music with all my heart. I just can’t do the Stones without Charlie. He was too important to their entire vibe, style and sound. Steve is a fantastic drummer; but Charlie was a universe unto himself. For me Keith and Charlie were the engine room for btheir music. I agree they sound inspired; I hear it in the tracks. But I just can’t do it. This is the story of my love affair with The Rolling Stones: Rolling Stones: kzitem.info/news/bejne/s21onnaPnmd3oKQ

True. It’s not rock n roll and classic Stones from 1966-1986, but it’s much better than their 1989-2005 stuff. I’d say it’s the first good “modern Stones” album.

Although it is a good, not great, album, I find Mick's voice to be too overdubbed and at times sounds very different. I would like to hear the songs live to see if they sound more basic. It's nice to see a nod to the song that gave them the bands name in the Muddy Water song Rolling Stone Blues.

I had really high expectations when Angry was released, so it was disappointing that the rest of the album didn't live up to that high water mark. Where I think they excel on this album are the non-rocker tracks. Dreamy Skies is a great little country bluesy number. Tell Me Straight is an excellent ballad from Keith. Sweet Sounds of Heaven is a nice little soul pop track with hints of Exile on it. The stand-out track for me is Rolling Stone Blues which harkens back to their very beginnings and is a great blues track that puts to shame the awful blues versions they did on their last album. The rest like Jagger's ballad is really bland, as are the rest of the rocker tracks, which come off as the Stones covering the Stones, rather dull and uninspired. But, a good half of an album from these octogenarians is pretty darn good and this release is the best album they have done in years, uh, decades!

I totally disgree that Blue And Lonesome was gritty and down to earth. Just because old blues songs are used doesnt make it less glitsy. Just like Claptons “From The Cradle” which was pretty dang slick, so was “Blue And Lonesome” I wish the Stones would get with someone like Rick Ruben (without the horrible production he uses) and have The Stones make a simple acoustic blues album. Go to Sun studios or somewhere that has a particular sound that they could just record and be right there in the room with us in a simple setting. Blue And Lonesome was way commercial sounding regardless of it being a back to their roots album.

I find that most of the reviews are riding on the coattails of the hype that preceded this album which makes it virtually incapable of meeting anyone's expectations. I am reminded of the Tattoo album and maybe a littlre bit of Emotional Rescue. That said it has the 70s influence, which I actually like that era of the Stones and yet I find this release to be, simply, okay, at best. Not bad, but not great, or at least as great as everyone is making it out to be. That said, the Rolling Stones ended for me with the death of Charlie Watts. And I can live with that, rather than see them sputter out over time.

It is a very good Jagger album with Keith bowing to Mick to all his compositions with many weird choices as he has no fingers (rolling stone blues awful arthrosic playing) or composing inspiration left to counter the still creative mick. Album gets better after several listenings though. Cover artwork SUCKS!
