Visit to the Roman Baths in Bath, Somerset, UK.
Bath itself is home to approximately 80,000 people, but these Amazing Roman Baths attract in excess of 1,300,000 visitors per year.
Built by the Romans in the first century and used till the 5th century, and then laying around to ruin until the 18th century, this amazing structure, is far bigger than it initially appears! It actually expands underground and the main pool which is the centre piece is only about 25% of its actual structure.
A hot water Spring was discovered by the Romans here (it is actually the only hot water spring in the UK), leading them to believe it was the ideal place to build the Baths, steam rooms and places of Worship. They believed that this natural hot water was a gift from the gods. So what better way to thank them than to construct somewhere to wash/ bath and a temple?
As result of it's incredible natural gift - hot water, it wooed Romans from afar making it quite a populated region. It became known as Aquea Sulis This is then proven via the hoards of amazing artefacts that have been discovered in Bath during the many excavations that have taken there. Coins, Sculptures, Skeletal Remains and stone coffins are just some of the many treasures that have been discovered in this area.
Although the water looks green and quite unpleasant now, when initially built in the first century, it had a roof protecting it. Without the roof, the sun and elements have resulted in algae growing, taking away what would have been it's amazing charm and allure. As you can imagine it would have been quite an beautiful place to come an experience the hot natural spring water, surrounded by the West Country Hills.
The Natural Spring itself, provides water at a staggering 47 degrees, far hotter than a standard bath you would have today. But the Romans used their engineering skills and ensured that the one small hot spring was able to provide water to the entire structure that they built.
The tour itself allows you to see the 4 main features; The Sacred Spring, The roman Bath House, The temple and the Museum, where, as you will see on our video you can still see artefacts that were left there by the original occupants of Aquea Sulis.
