Just saw a video from Skallagrim where he pointed out your channel and said you were a “criminally overlooked sword reviewer” and now that I have seen some of your videos I wholeheartedly agree. I am really glad that he found your channel and steered us your way because KZitem has never once recommended one of your videos to me which is a shame because they are great. It only took me one video to see that I need to subscribe because you have awesome content, keep up the great work!

That end knot coming loose sucks. Happened to me on a Ronin katana dojo pro, a Huawei DH unokubi, and my kris Cutlery wakizashi IV. Cool to see they've made some improvements, at least. I'm a fan of the black on black.

For the price, and knowing you've gotta glue the end knots first, if you're on a budget, and absolutely have to have a DH unokubi, I don't see many other options in that price range.

the bloodgrove going under the habaki it just a huge pet peave of mine.If they add a Bloodgrove, then they should have it terminate befor the habaki, or crimp the dam thing so no moisture can creep in
@Matthew_Jensen

Moisture would creep in anyway. I suppose either one is traditional but terminating above the habaki is a lot of work to finish nicely.

6:00 I think because the tsuka core are mass produced to size, so a full wrap would make them overthick. Good point though, why not just give it a quick sanding to slim and wrap full if the stuff is cheap anyway

Tsuka, Fuchi and Kashira look a lot like that $90 mystery sword that showed up on my doorstep (except that one has the kashira glued down really well). I think they default to panels because I've seen that cheap synthetic samekawa available in 1" wide rolls like tape. Otherwise, heal up fast, my friend!

Don't know why, but $163 for a Western European (migration era thru Victorian) sword generally gets you a vaguely sword-shaped object only fit for hanging on a wall.

Are there any benefits to this geometry (shinogi Zukuri) from a modern practitioner standpoint? Or is it just something cool and different?
@Matthew_Jensen
Жыл бұрын
It gets nuanced rather quickly but there are pros and cons to each shape. Shinogi Zukrui (all other things being equal) is probably a little stronger in shock resistance.. Thick of moving another sword or polearm out of the way. The meat on the spine is going to add something to both the mass but also the ability to take a hit. Uniokobi blades are (again all other things being equal) a little lighter feeling in the hand. The reduction of mass in the top two thirds of the blade will move the point of balance down. They tend to feel lively in the hand as a result. They are also a little harder to make. Complex fullering is hard, and the thinner a blade is the more likely it breaks or warps in manufacturing (from my understanding).

@@beepboop204 Sorry to disappoint, but sadly my grasp on the language is relatively poor. I can't comment on peoples' probably-wrong tattoos. The best I've got is the time I spotted where one, but not all, of the kanji was written backwards. Dude can't even lie and say it was meant to be read in the mirror or something.

I have some questions for some of you out there: What is the appeal of an Unokubi Zukuri? I've seen blades with this particular geometry, but I know very little about it. Does it have a purpose? Or, is this kind of blade purely aesthetic? Also, is the Unokubi Zukuri a traditional blade geometry? Or, is it a recent invention that has come out over the last few years?

i decided to poke around to see what Japanese martial arts exist, and its like 75% Swords or Unarmed! staff, bow, polearm.... no axes. at all. maybe Samurai used axes for breaching? or felling trees? but yeah, i should have realized before asking you about axes, that the Japanese are really into the swords! 😂

@@Matthew_Jensen i know it from Forged in Fire! it seemed like more of a "warrior monk" association, which is interested to me because Thor, Heracles, and others, retained some of that club-hammer-smashy weapon stuff from older times, before perhaps metals were readily available. it makes sense why the more metal in your weapon, the more status you have: and often that is the sword. cheers! the vyvance kicked in hard today lol

If they needed to use a blunt force weapon, there are variations of the Kanabo that are made of metal that would act sort of like a mace. Those still weren't that common though because the spear was considered the main "honorable" weapon, which is why they have so many cool looking spears.

Usually the knot coming undone would be enough to say no. Hamon close the the edge, white residue on the koiguchi, passably tight ito, and some of the other cons I listed are also deterrents. The unokobi geometry is not easy to find in this price point + a little lacquer is easier and cheaper then a dull blade to deal with. In this case I can see why some might prefer it over other options. I think I would still pick a Ronin RK series for the $140 but they do not come in unokobi geometry.
