Welcome someone who is weak in faith, but not in order to have disputes on difficult points. - Romans 14:1
We, the “strong” ones, should bear with the frailty of the “weak,” and not please ourselves. - Romans 15:1
But it can’t be the case that God’s word has failed! Not all who are from Israel, you see, are in fact Israel. - Romans 9:6
Paul is guiding the “weak” to grasp God’s mercy, membership and mission.
“Jacob I loved, but Esau I Hated”
So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. - Deuteronomy 10:19
When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not go over it again; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow. - Deuteronomy 24:21
I will make you a light to the nations, so you can bring my deliverance to the remote regions of the earth.” - Isaiah 49:6
because if you profess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Why? Because covenant membership comes by believing with the heart, and salvation comes by professing with the mouth. The Bible says, you see, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, since the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich towards all who call upon him. “All who call upon the name of the Lord,” you see, “will be saved.” - Romans 10:9-13
“God has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden.”
They were broken off because of unbelief - Romans 11:20B
My dear brothers and sisters, you mustn’t get the wrong idea and think too much of yourselves. That is why I don’t want you to remain in ignorance of this mystery: a hardening has come for a time upon Israel, until the fullness of the nations comes in. - Romans 11:25
The Potter and Clay analogy
The Lord said to Jeremiah: “Go down at once to the potter’s house. I will speak to you further there.” So I went down to the potter’s house and found him working at his wheel. Now and then there would be something wrong with the pot he was molding from the clay with his hands. So he would rework the clay into another kind of pot as he saw fit. - Jeremiah 18:1-4
There are times, Jeremiah, when I threaten to uproot, tear down, and destroy a nation or kingdom. But if that nation I threatened stops doing wrong, I will cancel the destruction I intended to do to it. And there are times when I promise to build up and establish a nation or kingdom. But if that nation does what displeases me and does not obey me, then I will cancel the good I promised to do to it. - Jeremiah 18:7-10
“Objects of wrath” or “Vessels of Wrath”
Actually, that’s how all of us used to behave, conditioned by physical desires. We used to do what our flesh and our minds were urging us to do. What was the result? We too were subject to wrath in our natural state, just like everyone else. But when it comes to mercy, God is rich! He had such great love for us that he took us at the very point where we were dead through our offenses, and made us alive together with the Messiah (yes, you are saved by sheer grace!). - Ephesians 2:3-5
Paul is guiding the “weak” to grasp God’s mercy, membership and mission.
He says to Moses, you see, “I will have mercy on those on whom I will have mercy, and I will pity those I will pity.” - Romans 9:15
Nor is it the case that all the children count as “seed of Abraham.” No: “in Isaac shall your seed be named.” That means that it isn’t the flesh-and-blood children who are God’s children; rather, it is the children of the promise who will be calculated as “seed.” - Romans 9:7-8
This is what he says in Hosea, I will call “not my people” “my people” and “not beloved” I will call “beloved.” And in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” there they will be called “sons of the living God.” - Romans 9:25-26
What then shall we say? That the nations, who were not aspiring towards covenant membership, have obtained covenant membership, but it is a covenant membership based on faith. - Romans 9:30
May the God of patience and encouragement grant you to come to a common mind among yourselves, in accordance with the Messiah, Jesus, so that, with one mind and one mouth, you may glorify the God and father of our Lord Jesus the Messiah. - Romans 15:5-6
That’s why I’m eager to announce the good news to you, too, in Rome. I’m not ashamed of the good news; it’s God’s power, bringing salvation to everyone who believes-to the Jew first, and also, equally, to the Greek. - Romans 1:15-16
