Commovente, Aldo Fabrizi recita in un modo passionale, da lacrime.

I love how horrified they are when the priest condemns them. It shows even they have standards. Makes them human.

It shows they're afraid. It's winter of 1944. Rome was liberated by the Allies in June of that year; the film was made a short time after. The priest is referring not to God's justice, which he believes all are subject to, but rather the temporal justice of civilization, which is drawing ever nearer, and they know it. Fascism was already defeated, and yet they still murdered and tortured, right to the end, there and in Germany. Under all the sneering bravado, they are terrified of the fate they know waits for them. And perhaps of what comes after, who knows? What I love, though it cuts me to the quick, is that moment of remorse on Don Pietro's face, when he realizes what he has said in his rage and grief. His faith calls on him to love his enemies, to pray for those who persecute you, as Jesus did, but that is the hardest of all burdens to shoulder. As he says at the end, it's more difficult to live well. It's not so easy for most people to die well either.

When he is drunk, that SS officer is almost anti-fascist. When he is sober, he is all business, such as commanding the firing squad.
