It is obvious that Romeo was a peaceful, gentle wolf who liked dogs and people. He was clearly NO threat to the safety of either humans or pets. What a shame that he was killed by people who wanted a trophy for their wall. Such people are a disgrace. They may have a "trophy" but the cost is far too great and robbed the people of Juneau. I do not like nor condone trophy hunting for any reason. This is especially true when a peaceful, beautiful animal such as Romeo is killed without good cause.

Wow. Can we atleast be more civilized than this? Yeah they shot romeo, what do you expect from humans? People have got to ruin things from time to time. But that is no reason to wish misfortune and death upon them. In a classical twist of irony, YOU HAVE become more wolf and Romeo was more “human” than you can ever be. I mean you would expect him to tear everything he saw in that land to shreds.

The book about Romeo is filled with hope, and of course, tragedy, but the part that really made me cry was when Jans wrote "There once was a wolf named Romeo..." Just that line alone shows how much of a loss his murder was. I'm watching this right now and it's so obvious that he was such a beautiful spirit. He showed us what life could have been like between our two species, and he also gave us a glimpse into how Man's Best Friend probably came to be. I hope your spirit is still with us Romeo. I hope you know that many people loved you.

This is how we domesticated dogs. Probably thousands of years ago, early man noticed some wolves seemed more friendly. They tamed them, bred them, kept the ones that seemed better disposed to people, let the other ones go. You think the first encounter might have been something like that.

@PKP405

+wingright2nd A lot of it has its roots in the hunter gatherer lifestyle of the time. As intelligent as wolves are, they recognized that it was probably much easier to follow the humans, wait for them to finish hunting and then move in and consume the rest of the carcass. At some point, they began following these hunters back to their camps (which I'm sure resulted in a great deal of conflict at first) however, despite all of this, a few humans started tossing them scraps of meat, and the rest is history!
@GrumpyGrebo
7 жыл бұрын
It was wolves. Wolves with naturally lower levels of norepinephrine (making them relatively docile, more prone to apprach and less fearful) were often rewarded by hunters by scraps of food at campfires, so inclined to survive at better rates than those who did not. Wolves got fed, humans got free guard dogs. Over generations humans domesticated the wolves. So we selectively bred them unintentionally, then chose to domesticate them while we were ahead.

Romeo’s disappearance triggered a community response. Reward money was put up and missing posters were posted all over Juneau. Friends of Romeo began investigating and in May of 2010 an arrest was made: Park Myers of Juneau and Jeff Peacock of Lebanon, PA were charged with a number of hunting violations, including an illegal wolf kill. The wolf, while not confirmed as Romeo, was an adult male taken from the Mendenhall Lake region on September 22, 2009 - 4 days after Romeo went missing. And it was black. Photographs confiscated from Myers and Peacock show a lone black wolf confidently approaching vehicles in a parking lot, later the two men posed with the carcass of a black wolf, and an image of a Juneau Empire article entitled “Romeo, Where Art Thou?” DNA analysis of the wolf was never performed but Harry Robinson examined the photos and identified the wolf by a recognizable scar. “That is definitely Romeo,” he pronounced. The hunters were found guilty of numerous hunting violations and the penalties handed down were typical of those for first-time violators - fines of several thousand dollars, suspended six-month jail sentences, and loss of their hunting licences for three years. As much as he was loved by the Juneau community, Romeo was still just a wolf, with no special rights or status beyond those of the rest of his kind or even that of the bears that were also illegally taken by the convicted hunters.

What a beautiful and magnificent being❣️ The unfortunate and devastating loss of a majestic being, who taught those living in Juneau, that humans and wild beings can in fact co-exist, in Peace! Let's remember that we've been taught, "Woe to those who harm one of my little ones!" I thoroughly believe, those who cause harm, will eventually live to regret it. The only thing that makes me happy is, knowing Romeo is in a place where he will always be Free. Free to be the beautiful, loving, magnificent and majestic being he was always meant to be. 😭😭😭 Rest in peace sweet and loving Romeo❣️❣️❣️ I've just heard of this story today and I have to say it has broken my heart and has devastated me emotionally. Tragic ending for a beautiful animal. Still, the people who "befriended" Romeo have to consider that their actions of trying to be a buddy to a wild animal may have helped in costing him his life. At what point did Romeo not have as much fear of humans as he should have? His interactions with people and their dogs set in motion a "let your guard down" effect, less fear of humans = loss of instinct and awareness towards people.The ancient instincts of getting the hell away from the hunters, and they may have been hundreds of yards away, seem to have been eroded enough to get Romeo shot and killed. People always seem to have that selfish attitude that what they do, even when intentions are good, will not have any consequences concerning wild animals. Seems like most of the time tragedy comes to remind them that wild should be left wild, no matter how cute or amazing the animal is.

I don't understand why the people of the town did not realize that that was a dog. It was just a hybrid. Did you know that also technically black wolves are generally the descendant of dogs. Partly. But it's not even just that. Because there's a difference with this animal and a black wolf. This animal is old. And he's not greying. He's not turning white patches at all? As all wolves turn white by the time they turn 12. But many of them turn white by the time they're six. So he would have significantly had some white patches and he had none. So it's not even like he was a black wolf. But black wolves themselves are the descendants of dogs. They have dog in them. So it's no argument that this dog had dog in him. And probably have more dogs than the average black wolf does. Because he wasn't graying I don't understand why these people didn't consider that this might actually be a dog. And that's why he was not around any other wolves and he was only around dogs and humans. They should have realized of course he's in a very vulnerable situation. Most dogs are in very vulnerable situations when they're out in the wild. Cuz they can't really fend for themselves. They're strays. Strays can't provide for themselves the same as a wild animal can. So I don't really blame the poachers in this case because they can't know all that information before killing him. What I don't like is the fact that why didn't the people of the Town understand what it was and actually try to protect this animal?
