The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway held their 'Steam Gala' over the weekend of May 11th-12th, featuring 8 locomotives in action on the 13 & 1/2 mile railway between Hythe and Dungeness. Alongside every serviceable member of their home-fleet, the event featured a visitor to the railway in the form of 'Spitfire' representing the Bure valley railway. The Railway is probably best known for its superb fleet of one-third full size steam and diesel locomotives, all of which have been built to run safely at speeds of 25mph on rails only 15 inches apart. All of the steam locomotives were built between 1925 and 1937.The locomotives in action at the railway were as follows:
RH&DR Pacific Class - No2 "Northern Chief"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No1 "Flying Scotsman" ("Green Goddess")
RH&DR Mountain Class - No6 "Samson"
RH&DR 'North American' Pacific Class - No10 "Doctor Syn"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No3 "Southern Maid"
RH&DR Canadian-Style Pacific Class No.9 "Winston Churchill"
RH&DR German-Style Pacific Class No.11 "Black Prince"
Bure Valley Railway Indian Railway ZB Class No.7 "Spitfire"
The timetable was certainly a hectic one with double headers, Triple Headers, Tender first, Top & Tailing and much more!
Also on static display was the railways No.4 "The Bug" as well as R&ER Diesel "Shelagh of Eskdale" and the railways own lister petrol loco.
