I've just finished watching the entire series, and enjoying the entirety of it. It's amazing that you were able to condense so much information into such easy to digest videos. That is an amazing statement to your ingenious. I wanted to come back to this video as I felt that this video was a small turn in your coverage. While I can understand the points that you make, I felt that this video was really the first one where you did show some bias. I wanted to finish off the series to see how you dealt with all of the presidents, and your coverage of both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama also cited critiques of their work, I still felt that starting with this episode you stepped back from some of your more "facts only" approach and began in insert some personal views. Was this because (like me) Reagan was the first President you remember from your own life? I'm not a fan of everything Reagan did, I was really only a kid when he was president but having read a couple of biographies of him and other Presidents I did think that some of your criticism may have been based on some personal bias. I don't know? I'm a really big fan of your work and think you do amazing things on your channel I even am a very minor subscriber/ supporter of yours and this particular video doesn't change that. I do find your analysis very interesting. Having read the biographies of a few presidents the fact your can condense so succinctly the accomplishments and various highlights of each is a real testament to your own abilities. I do really appreciate your efforts and look forward to future installments of this series. So thanks will continue to follow, watch a (and hopefully) be able to give you continued financial support!! Good luck and thanks again!

What I'm saying is: the only way to help mainstream conservatives understand some of the follies they've undertaken over the years is at least to be respectful. Now admittedly that's not easy to do when you've got so many trumpers screaming "libtard" at you, but you've already won so many of them over previously with your science-based videos. Of course, so many conservatives over the years have been gaslit to believe they should just "pull up their bootstraps" to overcome the difficulties of a low wage, but the reality is that inflation brought on by so called "trickle down economics" wound up rising faster than the wages could. This is why there's excessive income disparity in this day and age, and your boy Reagan is the one that really kicked it off. You want evidence for this? Look at the economic patterns of both Canada (which had similar policies under the Harper conservatives) and the USA since the 1970's. It's pretty blatant the more you look at it.

@@Eatinbritches Actually, inflation was excessively high during Jimmy Carter's time and even reached a peak in 1980. When Reagan came in, he brought down the inflation, and kept it at a relatively much lower rate during his whole presidency and inflation has been on the downward trend ever since. As for wealth inequality, you may be interested to know that poverty rate in the US reached a peak of 14% in 1982 when Reagan had just came in, and by the time he left ( in 1989 ), he brought it down to 12%. Also the share of the total wealth held by the top 1% in the US, increased by only 2 points during Reagan's presidency. The main contributor to the increase in the share of wealth held by the top 1% was actually Bill Clinton's presidency, during which this metric increased by almost 10 points. Also, just a point in general that I want to make. People keep saying that the middle class in America is shrinking and this is true, but do you know where this middle class is going? More and more of them are doing better, as a result more are moving into the upper income bracket, rather than the misconception that the middle class is becoming poor.

Basically Reagan was Trump before Trump. He campaigned as a populist, would use racial dog whistles to motivate a segment of his base, policies were mixed at best but unlike Trump he was polished. Had the presidential look, veteran, mostly agreeable personality but most importantly knew how to shut up. Personality matters and that's something Trump never could understand.

Great summary of Reagan, Professor Dave! To expand on your Star Wars bit, there are many who grew up in Reagan's years (like me) who felt that Reagan never really had a solid plan for "Star Wars," and knew it. All he needed was to spend enough money on it to convince Gorbachev that it was a "thing," thus making it a believable bargaining chip. Basically, some believe that Reagan spent enough money on a fantasy that it became Gorbachev's reality. Having lived in (West) Germany from 1980 to 1985, I can tell you that most Germans I know are thankful that Reagan's policies and posture toward the (then) USSR paved the way for Germany's reunification.
@Schmidtelpunkt
3 жыл бұрын
And yet the moment he could have used that chip he stuck to it like it was a real thing. And please don't speak for "most germans" as a lot of us are very aware that Gorbachev played a rather important role in how things turned out.

I love your presidential videos because they teach me an overview of what I did not live through. Its usually very interesting and I come away feeling as if I honestly learned something. Its really sad to see this video, since for the first time that I can tell, you've let your own bias rule. Things like "Reagan was the most transformative president ... but not for the better" 0:12 "Government is the problem. This passage will be taken as dogma for the GOP" 0:50 "Like many such children, he learned to live in the denial of reality" 1:37 "Facts are stubborn things, so Reagan simply ignored them" 6:15 "Another example of Reagans Outlandish thinking" 9:57 These things are fully opinion based, and essentially saying that Reagan, and the future of the GOP are morons. Which is just unfair. While this taught me a lot about Reagan, I feel like I can no longer trust it as a piece of education. You belittle Reagan and the GOP countless times in this video, someone who at least half the American population thinks was a great president. They would disagree with many things you said here, since topics like economics and foreign relations are not as cut and dry as you make it out to be. With that being said, Im really worried about your future President videos. Frankly, theyre the reason I keep coming back, and it seems like as you go on, you'll keep belittling republican presidents because of your viewpoint. I know its hard to do, but these presidents are so recent, and its not fair to inject your perspective on something as divisive, complex, and beloved to Americans everywhere. I hope you'll read this and understand why this video got its dislikes. Youre not upsetting angry republicans who always want to hear praise about their party, youre giving us a tangle of your perspective and facts, and feeding it to us like they are simply facts under the guise of education. It seems pretty irresponsible to me to be so negative against someone who is such a complicated mesh of good and bad. I really expected better of someone so engrossed with educating and helping people. This is a sad day for people expecting a fair and middling look at a president ranked as in the top 20 presidents by all major polling stations.

Yeah, he isn’t even trying to hide his bias. Reagan wasn’t perfect, but 9/10 of the Democrats that I know think he was great for the economy. I think that liberals today only ingest the facts that they find appealing. I try to stay as unbiased as possible, for example, I think that Clinton was objectively better as a president then Bush Jr.. Even though I am conservative, I still try to give Democrats credit where it is due. I just hate that someone as smart as prof Dave could be so lulled into the bias of the current age.

It's genuinely haunting how well the video gets into the pig-headed awfulness and villainy of Reagan, and it's without even mentioning his actual worst scandal: the handling of the HIV crisis, where it became unofficial government policy for it to "solve" the country's "gay crisis". Millions of Reagan's fellow Americans got sick or killed as a direct result of that man's homophobia. Which I suppose is much better than his 2020 successor, doing the exact same thing but for no reason instead of a bad one.
