On 3 May 1967, ITN's John Whale reported from the US state of California on the clash of ideologies unfolding between the left-wing students of Berkeley University and new right-wing Governor Ronald Reagan. Governing from the state capital of Sacramento, Reagan had demanded the university implement budget cuts and raise tution fees in an attempt to quell the student unrest that was rife of the University of California campus. Speaking to students at the renowned institution, Whale got a sense of the range of issues concerning students, chief among them the ongoing war in Vietnam. Interviewing Governor Reagan, meanwhile, offered Whale an opportunity to judge the seriousness of the actor-turned-politican. Had he underestimated the task of high level administration? And did he have ambitions for more senior political office?
