@@jthom1674 Beautiful country and nice people. I saw Merckx race at the World Championships in Montreal 1974 the only time he raced in North America. We drove up from CT. I was a licensed 18 year old bicycle racer, and Merckx was and still is my 'hero' Slept in a station wagon on the course the night before, went down to the start finish line way early, no one there but the empty stands. Then who rides up alone none other than Eddy Merckx! He looked at me and vice versa and he rode off in the early morning fog around the course I guess to scope it out and strategize his plans. Anyway the course being 7. 5 miles around meant I got to see him ride by many times and I stood at the top of Mt Royal so he would be going 'slow' as he went by me. I thought maybe he had let the breakaway with Thevenet stay out to close to the end and would never catch them, but then I witnessed why he won so many races - he blasted away I think less than two laps from the end and passed them with a guy from another team in tow who was just trying to hang on to Eddy's draft for dear life. I walked down to the final stretch and saw Eddy had simply ridden away from the guy drafting him and he soloed across the finish line. The fans chanted out EhhDEE! EhhDEE! EhhDEE! as he walked up the podium. I walked up to the podium and picked up a nice red gladiola flower from the bouquet he had held aloft. I keep it as a dried flower for years in a JC Penny catalogue and must have thrown it away. It was a great experience. He is the greatest athlete.

That he suffered enormously. He doesn't know what it is but for him Merckx was 5km/hr faster than them. He doesn't know what it is but thinks Merckx was faster than the year before.

@@Coco-ku3be yeah and todays big helmets mean the riders faces are too hidden to make quick identification possible, its for safety of course but detracts from the sport.

the only thing I dont like about old cycling is that there were too many cars and motos around cyclists, even on the finish line... Here you can count an enormous amount of them

@@tungstenkid2271 This is so true, this is the first time I see someone else bring up this argument. These helmets make them look like aliens and it takes away quick identification.

Righteous New Age American bearded hipster cyclist here on his "proudly" Made In China "aero" plastic Sh&tmano bike, with DISC BRAKES! Merckx and the others were doing it all wrong! Their position was wrong. They were not spinning. They knew nothing. They were all wrong!
