Here it is 2021 and I'm watching it again. You've done so much. Fun to look back seeing how your property is now. And l'l Benjamin blackening his fingers and showing off his "elf" ears. I think all children go thru a time where you look at them and for a moment and think " am I sure you weren't a gift from the fairies?" Ok maybe that's just me. Thank you all for the wonderous joy ride.

So glad you ditched the heat lamp this winter, I was so worried for you and your birds! I have two chickens, sadly lost my third the summer before last due to prolapse, which is a symptom of over treating, I wish I had known better before it was too late for my little girl, she was such a sweet, smart hen, always answered me when I called her name, made it nice and easy to know where she was lol. I want to get more chickens soon, our other two girls are getting on in years, turning 6 this year I think!

Wow!! The excitement on your face just beams. I can’t help but feel it too. This was a fantastic way to start my wintery spring morning (it snowed here yesterday). I too would have watched you clean the barn- clean and organize with Laura. I was thinking when you mentioned organizing the pots on the shelf, that it would be handy for you to take pictures of all your pots and create a photo library. I realize your a busy lady, but how helpful would that be when you are planning your container gardens. Anyway, loved the video and can’t wait to see the chickens!!

We live in zone 5b in Colorado. We don't use heat lamps, except as chicks, because if the power goes out you can loose your whole flock. They all snuggle together when it's cold sharing body heat. If you're really concerned, you could give them some chicken scratch with corn in it. I will say that a heated waterer is totally worth it in the winter.

I live about a half hour away from Laura and I use a heat lamp for my chickens in the winter. It might not be totally necessary, but it makes me feel better knowing they can get warmer if they want to. And yes, a heated waterer is a huge benefit!

Yay! A long video! Woot! Thanks, Laura. Suggestion on the coop: if you can, line as much of the chicken coop with (inexpensive) linoleum. I've watched a TON of homesteaders do this and it makes clean up SO much easier. You just wipe it down with a towel sprayed with disinfectant and boom! Chicken poop --gone. You know from having chickens as a kid that they poop EVERYWHERE, including on the walls.

Even though we dug a 2 foot trench and added chicken wire and large gravel to prevent digging under, and a wire roof to keep out hawks, the predators tried. Eventually 7 years later, one predator, either a racoon or a fox, chewed a hole in the wall wire and did enter and sadly, killed our entire duck flock. So sad. We didn't even hear it... So lesson learned -- electrify your wire!! We didn't, cuz we were over-confident! BTW there is an electric auto chicken door closer that closes at dusk to keep predators out, and a solar wire shocker for chicken wire. Love the show!!! And little Ben. Inspired by you last year, Hubbie planted 10 climbing roses at our pasture end, 10 privacy trees and 2 fruit trees. More to come, where's that Benjay?... Hugs...
