does expose root flare good for any type of tree? I have a very tall pine tree and about 20-year. Can I just start to excavate the base of the tree to expose the flare?

I am on a mission to learn this as well. I am waiting on my air spade to be delivered so I can get my 2 dogwoods & a maple unburied. Those 3 trees are struggling & they are constantly losing leaves like it's Fall. My other Maple is huge and has a very nice root flare. My water oak is also huge & after I blasted it with water and uncovered it's flare, it finally produced acorns this year. ( yeah, I didn't know about the air spade then) ...my understanding from all the vids I have watched thus far? Only tree that does not need/require the flare is a Palm. Oh, girdling roots are more than likely to also be an issue, once the flare is uncovered. They are strangling the tree & must be removed.

All trees except palms (which aren’t technically trees!)
