Saw Rory in early 70s as opening band for Deep Purple. He had on old ripped jeans, red flannel shirt and an old fender strat and proceeded to destroy the arena. Opened up with "Cradle Rock"and blew away everybody! Next day went out and bought everything I could find of his! I'm 67 and I was a fan from that day forward. One of the greatest performers I'd ever seen!!!!!

In winter of '84 he played in Sarajevo during winter Olympic games,, few hours before the concert I happened to bump in him as he was walking outside the popular olympic hotel in mountain above the city with his band mates around him, snow was everywhere and just as they passed me by - he slips on snow, and as I was nearest - I was first to help him to get up,, and he was very appreciative, and as he got up he gave me hug and handshake,,,,, of course I could not miss the moment and I asked him for autograph - piece of paper I had, but it took us few moments to find pen,, what intro to the best live concert I ever attended? This moment of meeting the legend I will never forget...

I was in Ballyshannon back in September, 2023, didn't realize that Rory was born there and when I saw his statue in town, I flipped. Later that day I wandered into and art co-op and had tea with one of the owners. He was about the age the Rory would be now, 75, and I spent several hours there listening to the guys Rory stories. He said Rory would come back from Cork and spend time with friends and family there. This gent used to play with Rory when they were little, not so much music, but fun, kid stuff. Great experience - one of many that I had in Ireland.

I visited Rory’s hometown of Cork and went to the small music library they’ve established in his honor. It was a moving experience. I’m 65 and have heard all the great blues and rock guitarists and to my subjective opinion, Rory had as much command over his instrument as anyone I’ve ever seen or listened to. He was also an incredibly nice and humble individual. I had the opportunity to see him perform at a small club in Philadelphia in the mid 70s. The performance left me as impressed as I’ve ever been by any musician I’ve ever seen and I’ve probably been to several hundred concerts over my six decades. If you haven’t seen it, Ghost Blues, the documentary about Rory, is very well done. Hope you enjoy it. ☮️💚🍎

When he played in Belfast in 1984 in a legendary set at the Ulster Hall, my older brother went, but I was just too young to be allowed to go by my parents. It's one of my biggest regrets. But at least we have footage to look back on. Most KZitemrs point towards his performance of Shadowplay at Montreux, but for me, the version from that night in Belfast tops it due to the sheer intensity and the completely unbounded enthusiasm and craziness of the crowd bouncing around like lunatics (it wasn't an "audience"). The roadies were dragging people off the stage who just wanted to touch the great man. Just a mental night... it doesn't get better... and the finish of the track when you think it's done and then he fires it up again... just awesome. His LPs are fantastic, but it's the live performances that set him apart from the rest. No fancy lights shows or visual effects, just sheer unadulterated blues/rock that smacks you in the face, grabs you and doesn't let go. The GOAT, bar none.

I first encountered Rory Gallagher on Friday August 2nd 1968 ( I was twenty then) when he was still leading his trio called Taste. By that time I had already seen Jimi Hendrix live on two occasions. But for me Rory was even more exciting than Jimi. The sounds he was getting out of his battered old Vox AC30 amp that night was incredible. The gig was the regular Friday blues night at the California Ballroom in Dunstable. When we found out he was playing the following night in Saint Albans Civic Hall only about another ten miles down the motorway, we were there like a shot. Rory’s playing that night was just as impressive as the previous evening, he was in incredible form. Jimi Hendrix was once asked by a music journalist what was it like to be called the world’s greatest guitarist. Jimi, modest as ever, replied “ You should be asking Rory Gallagher that question”.

His solo acoustic version of Nothing But The Devil Blues is as fine of an example of blues as any performance I've ever witnessed. From his choice of guitar, to playing it as a lap steel slide to start the song, to leaving space within the song for both the sound of his foot stomp keeping time and showing off his vocal prowess by singing the notes he was playing on guitar, he gave us an awesome display of what the blues can be in the hands of a true artist. His immense talent, combined with his instinctive understanding of the blues as a method to use for communicating with others, puts him in a very special group of people. He never forgot his roots and could always relate to what people went through from day to day. I thank those who made these videos, which aren't the same as seeing him live, but still demonstrate his artistic genius.

@@petehill8885 I have no doubt Jimi loved Rory's playing but he loved many greats . That thing where everyone say's Jimi said when asked who's the best is just a myth. Jimi like Rory was a humble guy & he was never prone to saying things that narrowed it down to just one player. Watch Terry Kath's daughter's DVD of her famous dad & the incredible guitar player he was. The proof is there & Jimi was documented by those band members & everyone that was at the show when Jimi came to see Chicago. He was so impressed by Kath's playing he did go backstage to meet him & did so. Truth was it was a mutual admiration thing & they became friends but never got to play together. Jimi admired many & like a true musician he like most real player have favorites but there's just no such thing as the best ever. He did love Terry's playing & rightly so as he was one of the best. There's enough proof in that DVD to show Jimi was there but the rest of that rumor is just not so.
