I've watched the show in reruns ever since I was ten years old. In more recent times, I became more aware of the fact that Sally & Buddy became much less prominent characters as the show went on. I don't think the show's producers purposely mislead her. The DVD Show was close to be cancelled after the first season. I think they made the realization, possibly through some sort of audience reaction data, that Rob's home life got the bigger reaction from the audience and decided to go with that more. Having said that, I can certainly understand Rose Marie's jealousy and disappointment as the season's went by. At any rate, I consider "The Dick Van Dyke" show one of my all-time favorite TV shows and well deserving of the high regard it is held in by most people.

Ego seems to be extremely prevalent in show business, so I can understand Rose Marie's viewpoint. However, I don't think she was out-shone by Mary Tyler Moore. In an ensemble cast like this, all characters contribute in their own way to a show's success. Mary was great, but nobody belted out a musical number like our 'Sally'. Rose Marie was an extremely talented performer and the show wouldn't have been the same without her. This is also true of other cast characters from Buddy to Millie to Mel. A brilliant show that I'm still watching on Prime, actually.

When the show started the Kennedys were in the white house, and Camelot and Jackie Kennedy were very popular at the time, I think Mary Tyler Moore had that Jackie Kennedy appeal to many Hollywood executives , she had a wonderful look about her at that time.I try to catch the episodes Sunday nights on Metv.

LIttle known incredible coincidence between the Kennedy's and the Petries, besides being the best-looking political couple in real life vs. the one on TV: The DVD Show first started filming its pilot on Fri. Jan. 20, 1961, the day Kennedy was inaugurated! Dick was then 35 (Dec. 13, 1925, now 96), Mary only 24 (Dec. 29, 1936 - Jan. 25, 2017, at 80). The pilot did not air until Oct. 3 ("The Sick Boy and The Sitter"), so a L-O-N-G wait, unknown to us back then! Dick and Mary had so much real chemistry together, they both said they could have had a real-life relationship together but both were faithful to their real-life spouses. Mary did divorce Richard Meeker in '62 after 7 years, but later that year married Grant Tinker. Dick and Mary frequently got questions on where was the other one, when out in public, so great was their chemistry together that others they met in public thought they were married in real life! There has never been a better-looking political couple since the Kennedy's, and ditto for a tv couple!

I loved Rose Marie...What a great actress who had a natural talent!! You never would've known there was any jealousy going on inside her through the years watching the show? There was one episode that stood out to me where She and "Laura Petrie" (Mary Tyler Moore) got together at a restaurant to discuss the man Sally Roger's was dating--nobody knew what he actually did as a profession til she let Laura know! What a rare occasion where I saw only these two in a scene alone together other than the haunted log cabin episode lol! I only saw DVD in Cheety/Bang but had no clue about his own show. I grew up in the Soviet Bloc. I only saw "Bewiched" in '76; Columbo's grocery scenes were edited so we wouldn't see what grocery stores looked like in the West. I started watching Dick's show after we moved here in the 80s and still love it. I think people wanted to watch Laura (as a woman I can't tell, but I think she was seen as sexy). I've observed she was also a contender for the lead role as many stories were about her love life while Rob's role was almost taking a back seat...she knew she could ask for anything she wanted and get it - that's how it works in their industry (Rose's role became only about getting a husband and the one who didn't have a family). Funny how Rose Marie's resentment of Mary didn't show through, but that was an adult decision.

The Dick Van Dyke Show was before my time. But, it's on a 24/7 channel on Roku, so eventually, I've seen them all. I thought all the cast members were equally talented and funny. They all had their own little niche/style of comedy. Having it all combined into each episode was hilarious. I have many favorite episodes, such as: the flying saucer episode ... the bird that kept attacking Richie ... the haunted cabin episode was incredible ... the episode where they had the intercom connected between the Petrie's house and the Helper's house. Millie Helper was a scream as was Mel Cooley ... and the kid, Richie, was great, a real natural. Yes, The Dick Van Dyke Show is an awesome, timeless and very funny show!

I can well understand RM’s disappointment if she was mislead, deliberately or not, about her character on the show. To have it gradually dawn on her that Sally was less prominent than she had expected must have been a letdown. But being a pro, I’m sure she adjusted in time and accepted things, happy to work on a hit show, receiving many well-deserved kudos herself. BTW, MTM had not just done stage work, commercials, and the “legs” series prior to the DVD Show. She had acted on about 30 TV shows by then, appearing on some series multiple times. For the same reason, more air time for Mary and less for them.. The actress that played Millie( forgot her name) was not jealous of her though. She accepted that Mary was younger and prettier and probably just satisfied to be getting a paycheck on a hit tv show.. Glad Rose Marie and Mary ended up as friends. She was older when she played the DVD Show, although still attractive, and it seems she would have understood the popularity of the young newcomer. She'd know that's how Hollywood works. Also, her character of the thicker skinned, seasoned career woman provided a wonderful counterbalance to the more submissive housewife Laura. MTM was the dream wife of the day. Nobody cared about seeing throaty Rose. It sucks that she didn't get a fair shake, but that's life. If they had swapped their parts, MTM would have gotten the 2nd women label which would have crushed the shows ratings. If you compare it to I Love Lucy, its pretty much the same setup; a working formula. For Rose to be the actual co-star, there could be no visible wife; the wife would only exist as a vocal target, meaning Dick making wife jokes, phone calls, or comical story lines.

I found Rose character more inspiring and a role model as a woman in a man's world and treated on screen equally in the 60s. She was fearless and independent. While Mary Tyler Moore character was complete opposite and relayed heavily on her husband.

That's really a shame to hear of any hard feelings because this show had an unrivaled ensemble cast and there was plenty of room for everyone to shine! Even recurring regulars like Millie and Jerry Helper were wonderful whenever they appeared! And unlike the Mary Tyler Moore Show later on the home life versus office was often very inclusive!!

Rose was jealous of Mary lol. Mary went on to have a glorious career with her own iconic show and an Oscar nomination while Rose Marie sat and whined.

It's not what Moore did or said that was funny. It was what happened to her in situations that was funny.

Slap stick is not a likeable comedy for me personally and that was what the show portrayed mostly in the office. Those actors were from vaudeville backgrounds. So I never really liked the office parts. The show was nearly cancelled after the first season, so the switch to more home life was a good move. Let’s face it, the show is quite dated in how women are portrayed.

MTM was sexy., funny and relatable. Not sure the Dick Van Dyke Show would have had the legs to survive without her. So she was money in the bank for Rose Marie and everyone on the show.

I turned it off right after you miss pronounced Buddy Sorrell - "with 2 L's". That told me you probably never even watched the show and have no idea what you're talking about.

For its' time, the Dick Van Dyke Show was outstanding. The cast worked perfectly together. It was a must watch show at our house.

1. Buddy Sorrell's last name is pronounced sor-RELL, accent on the second syllable.. 2. Mary Tyler Moore wasn't "given" her own sitcom, her production company produced it for her. 3. Phil Silvers, not Silver.

The writers were right with the balance of home and office life. The entire cast was shown off this way. There were several scenes in Sally's apartment as well. I watched this show as a child as it was a family favorite-- and I've streamed it over and over when it was on Netflix and now on Roku. Richie and I are the same age! When I was a child, one of my favorite episodes was when the woodpecker kept attacking Richie. Today the one where Rob has nightmares about an alien invasion and Laura rolls out of the closet on a carpet of walnuts. Also, the ugly brooch story.

As a child I loved the characters on that, show Buddy, Sally, Rob and Laura, I thought it would be great fun being a comedy writer not realizing all the hard work that must be involved.
