Met up with Ross in Vegas again and learned this about Ross:
“I’m a second-generation cowboy from Lubbock, TX. My parents both rodeod, and my dad ranched when he was younger before becoming a cotton gin manager. My dad and brother both rode saddle-bronc, my mom was a barrel racer and Miss Rodeo Texas in the 70s, and I rode bareback horses. Mom also plays piano really well and has always encouraged my music. So the early days of it, I’d be rodeoing every weekend and then playing when I could (mostly residencies during the week in college). At some point though, the music side took over. Right after college, I moved to Nashville to write songs and I’ve been here 11 years now.”
Ross had this to say about the song:
“Between rodeoing when I was younger and choosing music as a career, hotels are a part of the job. Most the time, you’re not staying at the best of places; always keeping an eye out the window making sure the van is ok, there’s weird smells, worse neighbors, bed bugs, etc. Those type of places only heighten the inherent lonliness of the job. I’d had that idea, “I Hate Hotels”, in my notes for a long time. I got together with Tyler Halverson and we wrote it pretty quick. It damn sure helps when you’re writing and telling a story with someone who also knows that lifestyle too. Every late check-out, and every metal bedspring.”
