We grow Lucuma here in SoCal… taste like maple syrup and consistency of sweet potato. Moist!😊

We can grow lucuma and green sapote in NZ, unfortunately it's a bit too wet and cold in winter for Canistel/Ross sapote to be happy here

@@BuenavistaNZ Any idea how your location would match up with mine here on the Central Coast of CA south of San Francisco? I'm asking because I'm curious to know if I have any hope of doing any better than you with the Ross Sapote. I spent some time in NZ several years ago on a friend's farm in Waipu. I was quite surprised at the range of subtropicals that were quite happy at her place - because I was visiting in late November - early December and was honestly shocked at how the cold was still hanging on that far north - especially in a region that I had believed was supposed to be somewhat comparable to subtropical San Diego over here. Did I just catch a freak chilly spring up there? Those are not exactly unheard of here in San Francisco or Santa Cruz , either. I seem to recall my friend saying she got about 50 inches (1300 mm) of rain - which is not quite twice what is typical here. FWIW - Cherimoya, White Sapote, Avocado and Feijoa thrive in ground in my cool maritime climate, but my Green Sapote is REALLY SLOW in its 3 Gal. container. On the no grow list, I feel safe saying I can write off Mangos and Starfruit - except in my hoop house. Anyway, thanks for any input.

I have a Fairchild #2 and an Arue, the Fairchild has a stronger, funkier flavor and is better for milkshakes. The Arue has a milder flavor and is better for eating straight up with a spoon. The Fairchild #2’s flavor can be overpowering but it makes the most amazing eggnog-flavored milkshakes ever. The Arue isn’t as strong flavored (less funky) so it is much more enjoyable for eating by itself (and is still makes a decent milkshake, but not as good as a Fairchild #2 milkshake).

One of my favorite fruit. I don’t know why, the ones I have had are chalky but for some reason I enjoy that texture. Maybe because I like hard boiled egg yolks.

Wondering how far north in FL the Ross sapote will grow and produce fruit? I’m in central Fl 9B…are you further south?

@@scottburgle4889 I’ve only had it in South Florida. I planted a seed in my yard in 9a Jacksonville. TBD if it will survive this winter. I was able to get it to survive last year but I had two 5 gallon buckets of water on each side of the baby seedling

From the video it seems like picking them too early makes them chalky idk. I know some mango varieties get chalky and internal breakdown if they have calcium deficiency. Might be something to look into but idk

It's canistel, not canisteel. The end of the word is pronounced ehl, not eel. Julian kept saying the right way to say it, but that didn't help at all lol. Just trying to help for future videos

That is so strange that you don't like canistel but you love mamey sapote. I have the Bruce, Fairchild, Oro and a unnamed variety growing in my food forest. This season will be interesting.

Canistel and mamey may be related botanically but the flavor and texture is very, very different. Mamey: soft, smooth silky texture, like a super soft avocado. Flavor similar to sweet potato casserole with amaretto liqueur and caramel drizzled on top; super sweet. Canistel: pasty, thick, dense texture similar to a boiled egg yolk. Flavor is mild, with hints of baked sweet potato, mango, pumpkin, egg yolk and funky aromas reminiscent of fermentation; moderate sweetness.
