Das Spitzentuch der Königin (The Queen's Lace Handkerchief 女王のレースのハンカチ) is an operetta by Johann Strauss II. [Johann II's Autograph Score] drive.google.c... • Das Spitzentuch der Kö... The libretto by Heinrich Bohrmann-Riegen and Richard Genée is based on the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616 author of the classic novel “Don Quixote”). The plot takes place in Lisbon in 1580. It was first performed on October 1, 1880 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna under the composer's direction. According to the research by Herr Peter Kemp [Hon. Life President The Johann Strauss Society of Great Britain]: By August 15, 1880 Johann Strauss II had completed the composition of the new operetta, and had handed over the full score (comprising 21 numbers) to the new director of the Theater an der Wien, Franz Steiner (1855-1920). However, the published Piano-Vocal Score contains only 19 numbers: 2 numbers were discarded prior to the première of the operetta. drive.google.c... The magnificent love-song: Rote Rosen duett (Red Roses duet 赤いバラの二重唱 ) is one of them. The other one is a song containing the melody used in the Waltz 3B of the Waltz op.388. The reason for the rejection of the Love-Duet is probably due to the fact it sounds “too operatic” to be used in an operetta (comic opera). Johann II managed to use the ”Wagnerian” melodies in the middle section of the duet into the 2nd part of the Introduction of the Waltz op.388. The publisher CRANZ was able to publish the Concert-version Piano score just 4 days after the première of the operetta. While waiting for Eduard Strauss’ return from a concert tour in Germany, Johann II created the (familiar) Ballroom version of the Waltz op.388, which is still played today. The differences between the Ballroom version and the Concert version are discussed in the original NOTEs: drive.google.c...
