I remember when walking to my previous home there was this big rottweiler barking to me from behind a gate. I would always go to the other side of the road so as not to pass in front of him. One day I gathered my courage and tried very slowly to cuddle him, ready to move my hand away at the slightest agressiveness. He was so happy that I cuddled him, I realized then that he barked just to call my attention. From that day on I always cuddled him. He was such a good sweet boy.

In my hostel, our warden has 2 dogs, a Rottie called Marshall and a Lab called Suzy. Suzy is the goofiest cuddle monster ever, but until recently, Marshall was not really from anyone that wasn't the warden or the security guys. Sir decided to introduce me to him a couple days back, as I make it a point to spend an hour or two with them every day, and since then, he's become a quiet, loving big boy, at least around me and a few others.

THIS is an actual Rottie rumble, not the one that has gone viral where the dog is clearly growling. This dog, on the other hand, is visibly relaxed, he leans on his owner as he purrs and barely curls his lips.

I saw who you are talking about! I had a Rottweiler growing up and he growled like that when he ate and it was the scariest thing ever. I thought a dog in general showing teeth and growling that intensely is definitely a warning sign.

I’m curious, why is it that the Rottweiler communicates like this and not any other breed?
@burgerkingbasketballcourt
Жыл бұрын
I love and accept all kinds of dogs and their quirks, but Rottie rumbles are one of the hardest things for me to understand. I don’t normally associate growling and baring teeth in dogs with happiness. Context is also important and in this video the dog is very clearly relaxed. In other videos, it’s less clear to me. However if there is a designated term for this phenomenon that I didn’t even know about, then I’m sure the owners of Rottweilers know a lot more about it than me and could distinguish it from a real growl. For me, I think the part that’s confusing is the way they bare their teeth. My 1 year old puppy growls whenever she plays, but my dogs never bare their teeth except for when they’re actually mad.
@MissElisabelle
Жыл бұрын
@@burgerkingbasketballcourt To be honest, I had never heard about these rumbles until I ended up in these American reels. I have seen plenty of Rottweilers here where I live, in Europe, and none of them exhibited this behaviour. They're just like other dogs. Could it be a learned and reinforced behaviour by people who already knew about "Rottie Rumbles" before getting one?
@burgerkingbasketballcourt
Жыл бұрын
@@MissElisabelle Possibly. Some breeds are known to just be more talkative than others, so I accept the possibility that Rottie rumbles are a real thing. Shiba inus, huskies and boxers are all examples of dogs which are generally known to be talkative (and even sometimes a bit dramatic) and it’s just normal for the breed. Some of these videos of Rottweilers could be veiled but real showings of aggression which are passed off as cutesy, but I wouldn’t know because I’ve never owned a Rottweiler.

@@2cautious It's not a growl, it's a Rottie version of a Purr. They just get so passionate, and only for their closest human. Pitties are great, but different. I am saddened and angered at the pure volume of beautiful Pitbulls in shelters. People are stupid. I post pictures of available dogs to Facebook in the hopes they will find a forever homes.

I have a pittie now and had two rotties before her. I have never in my life met a being more snuggly then my pittie except for my rottie, Champ. I could not sit without all 120 pounds sitting right on top 💕

@Elliott Stillings @Elliott Stillings I guess that's why he rolled back around for more? For animals the belly is the most vulnerable part of their body, and they don't show it unless they feel safe, secure and protected in their surroundings. Going belly up like that means he really trusts him and wants him to have better access to his belly (ie for BELLY RUBS!!). If you look closer he actually started getting more upset when he stopped petting him like when he started giving him kisses instead, it's like he's saying 'I don't want no damn kisses, I want a massage!" He might have also interpreted the kisses as him teasing him to get him to play. Our Lab also does the grumbly-whine and huff to complain, but his voice doesn't go as deep as a rottie's so it doesn't sound as intimidating haha, a lot if the 'scary' breeds like that are actually just big babies when raised correctly. Our staffie was the biggest suck-up ever, but you needed to be the stronger presence in the room, any breed will take advantage of someone with a lesser presence than themselves, some breeds (like German shepherds, rotties, dobermans, pitbulls, staffies etc) were simply bred to have a stronger presence and confidence in their surroundings, if you don't match or exceed their presence, and don't listen to their body language, that is when problems arise. Knowing and understanding dog body language, and also knowing your specific pet's body language is the same as knowing how to interact with people in general and knowing how you can interact with specific close friends and family. Our lab will curl his lips up, bitch and moan like hell, the whole nine yards when he's playing with our Frug, he goes totally overboard with drama to make it seem like he's having to put a lot of effort into keeping up with her and beat her, but he's actually making barely effort at all. He puts more effort into the performance than he does the actual playing, because he doesn't want to hurt her but still wants to entertain her. Same with kids, he plays gentler with kids or our Frug and puts on more dramatics than when he plays with adults or large dogs. We've had friends concerned he was actually going to hurt her when they started playing, until they watched a little more and realized exactly what he was doing. He sounds like (and half the time looks like) he wants to eat her, but he barely connects with her half the time, she's meaner with him than he is with her. And she's rougher with him than she is with us. To an outsider it WOULD probably look like he was ACTUALLY rough housing with her, but in actuality he just deserves an Oscar lol. He likes to tease the mail carriers (and sometimes friends) in the summer too by sitting behind the screen door (you can't see him because he's dark) and waits until they're just about to open the mail box to bark really loud and deeply, and then sits there wagging his tail with a grin on his face like he pulled off the prank of the century. But if you open the door all he'll do is bark some more until you pet him and then lick you a lot, lean on you so hard you almost fall over and hide your shoes so you can't leave. My uncle had a rottie that the neighbors were scared of because of how she looked and her natural voice, but in actuality was even gentler and more of a suck up than our lab, if she saw ANYONE coming over, she'd flop over and offer you her belly and complain till you rubbed it to her satisfaction. Scary indeed lol. The squirrels were better at guarding the house than she was! Hell, they even beat HER a few times lol! 😂

@Elliott Stillings TLDR: he's just playing hard to get and is more upset that he stopped petting him to kiss him instead. He sounds mean cause it's the natural sound of a rottie's voice.
