The three white caps to the left of the power transformer were part of the semi-cathode bias circuit of the AC568 circuit, not AC smoothing caps. I forgot they put them on a terminal strip on the Twin.

Of all the terrible ideas that came out of the early CBS Fender era, that combined cathode/fixed bias circuit was perhaps the worst. Intended to reduce distortion, it wound up only emasculating those amps. Another issue I’ve experienced with these transitional silver faced amps is the B+ voltage on the 6L6 output tube plates is often quite low - in some cases only around 390 volts, even at 117VAC or higher wall voltage. I’ll be interested to see what it is in this example.

The "semi-cathode bias" circuit is more tolerant of poorly matched tubes. The result is closer idle currents. However it brings the undesirable characteristics of cathode bias. Slightly lower output power and less gain in that stage. Personally, I don't think the benefits outweigh the side effects. YMMV.

Yes, that vibrato is in fact tremolo, but if you play Fender Stratocaster equipped with a synchronized tremolo, which in fact is vibrato, those two little mistakes cancel each other out. 😅

9:44 funny you should say that about touching the glass of the valves. I just replaced 4 EL84 valves in my H&K Grandmeister Deluxe 40 with new ones as one was dodgy and they recommend a quad matched set although the doco says inner 2and outer 2 can be replaced with a matched pair. Anyway everyone said “make sure you don’t touch the glass and get your fingerprint residue on them…”. I used a cloth glove just in case but nice to hear you refute that one !! Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘

I will follow this amp until the end, I had a 69 with D130f speakers and I thought they were a little too clear for my tastes but that amp also needed an overhaul too so I'm not sure anymore. Great amp but I think it was over 80lbs with the JBL's and became a real chore to move so away it went away.

Most receiving tubes don't blow up from the oils on hands and fingers. Glass transmitting power tubes will blow up like a halogen bulb. They can also light up like a halogen bulb too. The plates are graphite so they won't melt.

@@PsionicAudio And I totally forgot about the early Ampeg SVT, but it is technically a PA, that became an iconic bass amp. 6146Bs are definitely transmitting tubes too, and a part of a whole family of very famous transmitting tubes. There is also no need to use alcohol wipes & white gloves on those either. Bruel & Kjaer did make a monster 10,000 watt audio frequency tube amp that used the big graphite plate transmitting tubes, but it was used for vibrational testing. If only Pete Townsend had known about it....

Hey Lyle, I am wondering if you could express your opinion on some the recent changes to Marshall reducing their pricing? They reduced the prices massively and wondering how the amps fair (build quality, ability to repair etc.) to their competition? The JVM 100 watt 2 channel model is about the same price as a Friedman runt 50 for example. The JCM800 is also much cheaper however, Jason from Headfirst Amplification mentioned that they changed their transformers-any thoughts? Thank You, your work is incredible btw!
