I was thinking the other day how crazy it is that ketamine can be administered legally, but I mean it makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. It appears the frequency of the vocal cords/folds is not what is actually changed. Helium, since it is lighter, speeds up the sound waves and we perceive it as a higher pitched sound. Xenon and sulfur hexaflouride slow the sound waves down and we perceive as the sound being deeper. Funny video though.

I just watched the video on that on Mental_Floss. Is that where you saw it? I love that magazine.
@mikesimone1

elfman5150 No, I didn't see it there. I have taught anatomy and physiology from K-college for almost 30 years. I also thought the gas changed the frequency of the vocal cords--until I found out otherwise. Another thing I remember being taught in college was the Coriolis Effect. They taught me the toilet water goes the opposite way in the southern hemisphere. I've been telling people that for years (can't believe everything your prof says) but I recently took an astronomy class and found that the toilet water moves the same no matter where you are.
@elfman5150

I don't believe that this changes the resonance of your vocal chords significantly. The change is in the resonance of the spacial cavities in your airways because the speed of sound in air is part of what determines the resonant character of a partially enclosed space. The resonance of y I ur vocal chords is only dependent on their tension, length, and density.

@philosophicalinquirer312

you cant get more than a few atoms of Oganesson. First, its probably a solid not a gas. Second, if you could get a solid amount, the size of a balloon, (which you cannot) it will spontaneously go critical and create a nuclear explosion with apparently 300 billion Celsius core according to some calculations. Its the equivalent of the "1 kilometer across uranium ball" - something fundamentally impossible as it is way beyond the critical mass for spontaneous fission. (in the case of Ogg it will be millimeters across for total nuke - and impossible to accumulate anywhere - any "collecting container" would be destroyed)

@missign0
8 жыл бұрын
What has frequency to do with speed. Frequency has to do with height of the wave speed has to do with movement within air m per s.
@iEr1n
8 жыл бұрын
+Yiannis Ath frequency is not the height of the wave. Thats amplitude.
@iEr1n
8 жыл бұрын
+Yiannis Ath Not trying to insult you or anything but you should take a refresher in math and physics. Our voice is just vibrations (which are represented by waves). The gas decreases the frequency at which our vocal chords vibrate and smack together producing sound. This in turn results in a deeper tone as bass is a low frequency wave.
@missign0
8 жыл бұрын
frequency means the number of repetitions per unit of time. what has this to do with speed? Like the vibration of a drum or a violin string, the vibration frequency of the vocal cords is independent of the type of gas that surrounds them. The velocity of the sound waves is faster in helium (and the wavelength greater), the frequency remains unchanged because it is determined by the vibrating vocal cords.

Anthony Pazos My favorite element is Fluorine, hands down. Of course you probably wouldn't want to inhale fluorine. It would react with the moisture in your lungs and mouth to produce hydrofluoric acid, and if you get hydrofluoric acid in your lungs, you're gonna have a bad time.
@VoidHalo
9 жыл бұрын
Anthony Pazos About 4 or 5 minutes is how long you can usually go without air before losing consciousness. It's no different than if you were being suffocated. It's the same basic principle. You can read stories of people who have suffocated while trying to breathe nitrous oxide to get high to get a good idea of what would happen. It's essentially the same sort of effect.
@johnburt7935
9 жыл бұрын
Sean Elliott If a kid inhales helium nonstop and passes out, it seems as though there will be little harm done: s/he will wake up in a few minutes feeling like a fool (or maybe deciding that it's an oxygen-deprivation high that's safer than huffing paint fumes). Would it be possible for a person's lungs to be so filled with a heavier-than-air gas, though, that it couldn't all be breathed out? I suppose that might be so if there were a gas much, *much* heavier than air, but that xenon isn't quite that heavy, right? Then again, water is a good deal heavier than air, and people cough it out of their lungs all the time....

With only a balloon of the stuff the worst thing that would happen to you is that you pass out. You have better odds of dying by being struck by a meteor. The only way I would say you could die is if you were in a low-lying area like a pit or on the floor in a closed room and you fill the room with the gas. Since it's denser than air it will sink to the bottom and displace all the oxygen so even though you breathe automatically you get no O2 and die. All that said, I don't blame this guy for putting up a disclaimer. People will sue over the most idiotic shit imaginable even if there's not a shred of truth in it.

So we do know what it will do to the red blood cells: absolutely nothing. ;) That said, it's not without some risks. As some people in these comments have pointed out, the density of xenon means that it could potentially sit in the lungs and not come when you exhale, and so take up room and make it harder to take in oxygen from the gas we breathe every day.
