One of the more interesting - and certainly the most challenging - sections of Route 66 goes from Kingman, AZ to Needles, CA. As you drive out of the Kingman the scenery is pretty cool and then you're across a section of desert. I'm glad our AC was working!
As you leave the flat behind and start the gentle climb into the hills, the vista around you is breathtaking.
When we went through this section, there were numerous locations where a rainstorm the day before overflowed the road, with numerous washes showing moisture in the sand and water in the creeks. Greater or lesser amounts washed across the road, with sand and rock left behind. It looked like the road crew did a first blush to make the road passable.
Cool Springs is an interesting stop, not much more than a gift shop. The sign on the building says cabins available, but they appear to be long gone.
Then you start your ascent up the switchbacks. No guardrails or shoulders on either side for much of it. A lot of it was so white-knuckle that I didn't shoot video or pics as I peered over the edge to steep drop-offs.
Once over Sitgreaves Pass there's more twisties into Oatman. You could shoot a throwback movie in this town. Donkeys roam the streets and there's even a sign to buy donkey food!
Once through Oatman the road flattens out and it's a nice jaunt over hill and dale through rugged desert with great vistas in the distance. Through Golden Shores and Topock, hop onto I-40 over the Colorado River and you're into California.
