Me parece un excelente trabajo, con las pinceladas cortas que definen perfectamente la imagen recreando la realidad. Pasé un muy grato momento interpretando su forma de crear. Muchas gracias por la generosidad de compartir! Saludos desde Argentina.

Wonderful John - It's always a pleasure to watch a painting in progress from accomplished painters such as yourself. You and Richard Schmid are my favourite artists in that you make it look effortless. We know that it takes countless hours, months and years to achieve this level of "effortless" :)

Many thanks for your generous comment Grant. To make my painting look easy is something that I have always strived for. As I've said to people, I want my paintings to look as if the brushes danced on canvas. Often frustrating but rewarding when it happens!

Thank you for the wonderful demo John. You have inspired me to paint some gouache studies from my trip to the South Island earlier this year.

Just discovered you and your painting. I love to watch you paint. I enjoy your clarity of intent as displayed in your direct and intentional application of paint. In this painting I was interested in how you down played the emerald green in the forground which would have definitely competed with the focus on the distant blue mountains.

Thanks for the inspiration... Just found you from buying Richard Robinsons DVD. His work has hit me over the head with my lack of chroma lately. Must get to N.Z. soon... I live in Victoria, Aus., so not so far at all.

Thank you for your kind comments Mary and Kevin. I use Winsor and Newton colours Mary - I usually use Winsor blue but it really doesn't matter. Sometimes I will choose to use Gold ochre or some other colour. I glue the canvas on to an MDF panel with PVA glue. ( MDF Is short for medium density fibre board.) I buy it in large sheets - 2.4 m x 1.2 m and then cut it to the sizes I need. I paint the glue onto the panel, not the canvas, lay the canvas as quickly as possible on the glue area, and then smooth it out with my hands. When I am happy that there are no bubbles or dust under the canvas, I then lay a heavy flat board on top until it is dry. I have tried this process with both linen and cotton canvases with no problems. I'm working on a video right now and it will include a short clip on how I mount my canvases. I've painted in the cold on many occasions here in Glenorchy Kevin, but only once when it might have been -4 or 5°C. I've found that the paint is more difficult to move around despite using more medium and although I wear a freezer suit, my hands will just not work properly. I've decided to put a skylight in our garage roof and work in there when it is simply too hot or too cold! I really enjoy working outside but as I get older, I suspect I'm getting softer! I very much admire Richard Schmid's work - he has been one of my mentors through his books. Try to get to Glenorchy - it's one of the world's best kept secrets!

Thanks Kerry. Have a look at my new/rebuilt website. It shows a newish KZitem clip as well as a new blog page that you may find interesting. I'd really appreciate your comment. I get frustrated with my colour..... and tones at times too! When it comes to painting, there's a lifetime of things to learn!

Thanks for your kind comment Batova100. I'm working towards free teaching snippets on KZitem & will have full videos of a painting with a running commentary for sale as well. I'll advise details on my website in due course.

Thanks for your encouragement chetmargo and kniki3. The steep learning curve of computer skills, and other distractions, have been a problem, but I do intend doing some teaching ( in real time ) on brushwork, colour, etc. on You Tube (hopefully) soon! If you want to try buying a video from the website, it is now working ok.

Hello, I have recently been enjoying your nature paintings. It is pleasant to watch. Just a strange question, are the ancestors from Germany? And has the family name changed after a number of generations? Our family name is Schrumpf, later also known as Crump. warm regards from Goirle in the Netherlands.

Thanks John. Love your work and your videos here are truly inspiring. May I ask what medium you use please? I am a mainly acrylic painter but get the urge now and then to go back to oils though I have issues with chemicals so have been avoiding it for some time. I am thinking though that I might like to use oils for plein air painting so would appreciate knowing which medium you use for this. Thank you. I hope you are settling down into your new home up north. Its a huge thing moving home from one part of the country. Best wishes in all you do. Lorna

Wonderful work! Thanks for sharing. What color of blue do you use for drawing in the original painting? You say you glue your linen canvas, what kind of glue, what type of board and is there a special technique to make sure it lays flat? Any videos on this?
