Roxanne Shanté’ is one of the dopest female battle rap emcees to ever represent hip hop. The only female of Marley Marl’s re-formed Juice Crew. The original Juice Crew was founded by Mr. Magic, which Marley Marl was a member.
She got here name from UTFO’s song “Roxanne, Roxanne” when Marley Marl seen her outside of the Queensbridge Projects carrying some laundry to the laundry room. He asked here if she wanted to record a record. She agreed, and Marley created an answer track to UTFO’s “Roxanne, Roxanne” titled “Roxanne’s Revenge”.
The original issue of the 'Street Version' was a cassette tape of Roxanne Shanté rhyming over U.T.F.O.'s "Roxanne Roxanne" instrumental. Select Records threatened a copyright lawsuit. So Marley Marley and Shanté re-recorded the song to a different beat, and censored the explicit language, and it was released on Pop Art Records.
This answer track spawned what became known as the “Roxanne Wars”, with dozens upon dozens of answer records being made by huge number of artists & groups.
