Imagine beating James Toney, Bernard Hopkins and Virgil Hill and having folks question who he beat at the time 🤯 boxing really doesn’t love its fighters like it should until they’re gone.

I think they looked at it line he stayed at light heavyweight too long after he basically cleared it out, minus Dariuz Michalschewski. If Roy would’ve mowed down his opponents, a la a prime Mike Tyson, those doubts would’ve never existed.

Hall was no better or worse than many boxers in the modern era who hold elevated world rankings and even alphabet championship belts. The gulf in class between these guys and Roy Jones was just so huge.

When Roy switched to southpaw in round 3, Foreman said he did it to confuse Hall so Jones could get some wind back. This is possible, but speaking as a Southpaw it's likely he was testing the shot selection options he could have from that stance. Establishing some of the fundamental tools is harder with fighters are in opposite stances

Roy ducked a lot of guys around this time. Darius M., Steve Collins, Nigel Ben, etc. There were fight to be made but he fought guys like Hall at this time. I still think he was a great fighter but he avoided a lot tough fights around this time. Instead of pounding the drum to go up to HW,HBO could have been pounding the drum for him to fight Darius M. It would be kind of like when Evander Holyfield won the HW championship and instead of fighting Tyson and Moorer, fought a bunch of tomato cans and then complained there was no one to fight while Lennox Lewis was holding one of the titles. Of course Holyfield fought Lewis, but it would be similar to that. Basically Roy was fighting the Halls of the division when he could have fought Darius, or someone like Collins or even had a rematch with Tony or Hopkins, Roy was fighting a lot of top guys for awhile in the mid-90’s - like Tony and Hopkins - but then veered course and started fighting guys like Hall and a number civil servants during his prime. It was too bad because I think he would have done well against the tougher competition. Even if he lost a couple fights against those tougher fighters, there would have been no question surrounding his legacy, even after his career went into decline after coming down from HW.
