Back in the early 70s. I drove a truck for a corn and seed merchants in halesowen West midlands england. I had a delivery to a Mr.Roy wood. In kinver staffs. I never gave it another thought. When I got to the address on my delivery note. Nobody was home. So I walked round the back of the house. It's was called stourton hall.big massive house. And I looked through the French Windows. One big recording studio .Then the penny dropped. Mr .Roy wood. I went back a few weeks later and someone was home then. It was Roy himself. He said can you put the hay n feed over by the pen. He was sutch a nice chap and he gave me £5 . not much less than I was on a week. Well Roy I've spent my five pounds a long time ago. But I love your music and always have been a fan.

Brilliant, one of the best writers and performers Britain has ever had. I owned a music company back in the 60's and 70's and worked alongside Roy many times, when he was with Don Arden and Jet Records. In 1973 I bought a new Rolls and with one of my pals drove it to Mallorca, and this was one of the songs I had my engineer record for me and I must have played it a couple of hundred times between Fulham and Barcelona. Great song, great fun, no bullshit just good old "down home" rock n roll. And I still love it!!!

I also go back a long way with Roy and have seen him many times, he's a big hero of mine. You're probably never ever going to capture the recorded sound of `See My Baby Jive' on a live set. I think Jeff Lynne is fabulous, I have just about everything he and ELO have recorded, but I firmly believe if Roy had not given him his chance in the Move, his 'Star' would not have risen. The talent of course was always there, but I don't feel he would have found true song writing fame with The Idle Race. (Just my opinion) Another thing that has puzzled me about Roy when playing live is that he does none of his solo stuff. Considering what he did with `Boulders' and `Mustard' he just seems to set aside his ability as a multi-instrumentalist to play guitar. Wouldn't it be great to hear `When Grandma Plays The Banjo' for instance? Best bit of clawhammer style, this side of Earl Scruggs. I know he has a great back catalogue, but you never hear songs like `Chinatown' or 'Tonight', two of my personal favourites that Roy wrote II believe just to fulfil a contract with EMI before ELO could be launched. This guy is not recognised enough.

Spot on I have been saying the same thing about Jeff Lynne without Roy Wood , would Jeff be the star he is only for Ace, Trevor and the late great Carl leaving where would he be. Come on, Jeff Lynne produced his first album with the Idle race at age 19. Listen to some of their tunes especially Hurry Up John which I think is a psychedelic masterpiece. He actually turned down Roy Wood's first offer for him to join the Move in 1969 to replace Trevor Burton as he'd just released his self produced second Idle race album simply called The Idle Race. When the album failed to do much in the charts he took up Roy's second offer and the rest, as they say, is history.

I'm not so keen on Roy Wood's big band influenced stuff, though I'm still glad he's performing and his inimitable vocals are still there. I think with his voice and guitar style, he's especially effective with Elizabethan/early Renaissance English folk influenced rock such as "Whisper in the Night" though he probably wanted to move on from that after ELO.

I worked one time at Cropredy folk festival as a stage hand in 1998. Roy wood headlined and afterwards there was a small back stage party. I was using backstage toilet when Roy walked in. Only two of us in makeshift urinal. I realised who it was and just said. "I suppose its good now to have a break after that lot". This amazing talent just said. It would be, but they have to get up early next day and get everything ready again for next gig at Peterborough (or somewhere far from Cropredy). It was like talking to one of the stage hands. No airs or graces. What a nice guy. never forget meeting him. Zero ego.
