The scene is Lee Canyon, a small ski area about 30 miles east of Las Vegas, Nevada, about a half-century ago. (The ski area was shut down long ago, but there is still sledding down the slopes a bit. (Yes, 30 miles from Las Vegas.) My mother was a ski instructor - she handled the beginner children and their moms while the lads nobly took over for the Las Vegas show girls. One of her younger male colleagues had a Triumph Bonneville of late-'60's vintage. He claimed that with a lady on the pillion he could settle in to one specific RPM and she would turn into putty in his hands. It is something like what the techies now do with operating systems, applications, etc. - take what some might consider a "defect" and turn it into a "feature." (In all cases, a much less labor-intensive task than actually fixing it. Hard enough with a twin. . .)

Your experience is similar to mine with these exceptions. The gearbox gave me issues for the first 500 miles, a lot of false neutrals. This has straightened itself out and is no longer a problem. The vibrations in the handlebars are still an issue for me... but only if taken on the freeway (motorway?) for more than 50miles. They are painfully numbing.. and this is with aftermarket "comfort rated" grips. The vibration in the footpegs is not too bad. The seat is too hard in my estimate, I bought an aftermarket leather seat from BAAK and it is better for comfort and esthetics.. I am 6'0" and weigh 185lbs. Low speed handling, I mean really low speed, parking lot speed, is difficult because of the uneven throttle response. The experience that irideTas had with this and his correction of adding a powertronic controller motivated me to purchase one as well... I have yet to install it. I also have the 19 tooth front sprocket and Carberry vibration reduction plate, neither of these installed yet... my lack of confidence in my skills as a mechanic hold me back, as well as a question as to whether I really want to change the personality of this bike. This bike is most at home on smaller roads at speeds no greater than 50 MPH. This is where I spend most of my riding and no other bike I own gives me more pleasure in that milieu. Other bikes I have, including a 650 Interceptor, are superior for the 62 mile freeway commute. In short, I love this bike.. Motorcycling is about joy in conveyance. Not comfort. If I could keep only one bike in my garage... this would be it.

Rightly said Uncle Stu, here in India 🇮🇳 we have Royal Enfield showrooms and dealerships who give you good services and parts are available, but the point remains that the quality check while the bike comes out of the factory is not at all up to the mark! The 650 twins is a different story though. I own a 2015 Classic 500 which had issues with the mudguard clearance when it was new, the paint was a bit brushed off under the tank which I did not notice then and also the springs under the front seat was replaced after just 6 months. These are mostly due to the lack of negligence when the bike leave the factory. Apart from that, if anyone asks if I would buy another 500 if I had the money or would I recommend buying one, my answers would be, “Absolutely, just go for it!” Unfortunately they stopped manufacturing those engines which is really sad!

Brett Wicks Honestly, I do not know about the world market, but here in India 🇮🇳 the last 500cc engine of any Royal Enfield model was sold around the month of November and December of 2019 after which it was discounted due to stricter emission norms in India which is Bharat Stage VI and according to that norms even after installing another catalytic converter just where the exhaust pipe starts from the engine, it was not able to clear the tests. There are various other reasons as well for which finally they thought of discontinuing the 500cc engine. We do have Classic 350, Electra 350 other than the 650s and Himalayan. Here in India 🇮🇳 they are coming up with a all new engine layout similar to the 650cc and it’s the Meteor 350, which is a single cylinder 350cc air oil cooled engine which will hopefully launch by this month.

Overall I think we can see you are very happy with this motorcyle as it is providing you with what you were looking for - riding pleasure. It certainly does look the part and I know what you mean about strangers coming up to speak to you. I have had my Bonneville for a few days now. “That takes me back” is one of the standard comments I hear and that certainly applies to yours. It’s a smashing looking beast. With regard to your warranty claim, it is a shame Royal Enfield attract the buyers they do. The first sort of customers are those looking for a new motorcycle at a price they can afford. Like Skoda and Lada dealers from years back, RE’s offerings are some of the cheapest on the market. You couldn’t go much further down in price. So when you bought one of these you had to put up with what you were given because the dealers were reluctant to help, maybe because their margins were wafer thin. They probably felt they couldn’t afford to spend any non-chargeable time with their customers; not that this is a valid excuse, so they ignore them. The other sort of RE customer is the knowledgable, experienced rider who deals with most of the minor issues themselves and probably most of the major ones as well. In both cases this lets the dealers off the hook. That is until you take things to the next level, something they count on you not doing. My top tip for buying anything for more than £100 is to pay by either taking out credit (a very small amount) or use a credit card. It doesn’t matter how small the loan or credit credit payment but this will give you a second layer of protection under Section 75 or the Consumer Credit Act, 1974 (as amended). The credit provider is on the hook for the entire amount. Mention the words “I’d like to make a Section 75 claim” to your credit card company and they start paying attention. They will probably try and wriggle off the hook but stick with it. The last ditch is a Small Claim in the County Court, against either the dealer or credit provider. The latter will result in a very rapid response. 😎 The real shame is that poor dealers, distributors and importers will only change when the market forces them to do so. If only they realised that by investing in their customers they could be developing a reliable income stream for many years. Again another great video. Thanks Stuart. ps. For those interested in making a claim, search for “Section 75 claim” on your web browser. It’s very straight forward.

I've spent about eighteen months researching Royal Enfield before taking the plunge. Watched many reviews on the 500 Classic and researched its history, spoke with owners sat on bikes at the dealers, not just the 500 but an Interceptor and Himalayan too. The 500 just felt 'right' for me so I bought one. The downside is due to covid my training was cancelled and until yesterday hadn't been on a bike for over five months. It felt good to be on two wheels again and I'm absolutely desperate to get my Classic out on the road. Still the time I wasn't able to ride was put to use in getting the bike how I want it. Yes I may be inexperienced on bikes but I know my bike is right for me.

I must say, the new Bullets are on a different plane ...I had a 350 Enfield bought new in the UK in 1992 and the experience was non-habit forming. Tinny body panels, crumbling rubber, and I must have pushed it home more times than..well you know. But it was fun to ride, and in a wild burst of optimism I took it from the North East of England to France and back...we just about made it. I succumbed again to her charms 28 years later, and am entirely happy with my 2018 500, but the clincher for me was that Eicher had taken over from Enfield and I knew that the build quality issues would have been resolved. There were still problems, in line with Stuart's QC niggles (the EFI mapping was way out of kilter and the engine misfired in mid-range), and there was no bulb in the Tiger Eye running light housing...but I entirely concur that if you are prepared to stick with her, and pamper the little foibles, you will be rewarded with a charming ride that leaves bugs in your teeth.

A very detailed review as usual by you Stuart and I like the easy way you talk in that quaint accent. In India the way we look at a Bullet is in many ways different from the west. The Bullet has always been hugely respected and this can be gauged just by looking at the value retention of these bikes in the used market in India. As a fifty year old I remember the time when even then in my school days the Royal Enfield was an icon. One of my friends who had a 1970s 350 cc used to come roaring into my lane and the deep bass would bounce off the walls of the houses. Old timers say the Bullets then had heavier flywheels and greater low end torque but I am not sure. We would slip out in the evenings about 15 years old or so , scaring people with its sound and we being young and careless would ride without helmets feeling the wind in our faces feeling quite important. There was no mistaking the sound which I think is its most sought after credential in India the other being its sturdiness, long term reliability and heaviness which as a general trait in all things mechanical is sought for in India .

another good video stu i totally agree with your comments = it is what it is and viewed from that prospective a good bike, when new it does seem like the piston stays still and the bike goes up and down!! but once run in correctly settles to typical 500 single thrum. love the videos - Keep em comin............

Picked up my beautiful Desert Storm Classic 500 last week only 2 weeks after picking up my new Continental GT 650. I was in the Royal Enfield dealers ( Salt Creek Motorcycles down here in sunny Australia ) looking at some gear and was looking at the new Desert Storm Classic 500 that had just been delivered to the shop that day, when my wife turned and said to me why did you not buy that model and you should buy it now before it goes. I immediately thought this is a trick question and a trap of some sort be careful how you answer this my son, but no she was serious and I bought it 5 mins later. In my 46 years of marriage and owned possibly over 30 bikes, I have never had my wife encourage me to buy a bike. I now have the beautiful dilemma of what bike should I ride each day. I still cannot believe my beautiful wife Jan let me buy 2 new bikes in 2 weeks...Maybe I will wake from a dream.

Recently had a similar issue on a new Meteor 350, PDI missed the throttle cable nuts were lose (one off the bottom end was trying to jam the throttle linkage) and the DRL was not connected properly and the wiring hanging out of the connector block inside the headlight assembly, both easily fixed but both missed at control and PDI by the dealer, absolutely adore my Meteor but not a bike for the uninitiated in maintenance and repair, loving your videos and your passion and fairness on all things I have seen so far :)

Picked mine up new from Lancashire and rode it back via m6 to North East, lost 3 fillings and had two pleasant ecoeriences thanks to the vibrations, having said that 1300 miles and agree reith Stuart, the vibes are seriously less and makes me grin daily.

My Classic 500 has done about 4,000 km now and so far I did not have any issues apart from a blown bulb. However, although I ran in the bike meticulously, it does vibrate boneshakingly over 80 kph in fifth. That doesn't really bother me though, as I only use the bike for the back roads. It is a comfortable, frugal, nice handling bike with a lot of character and one of my favourites.

Thanks for your positive reviews on the Classic Bullet Stuart, I have really enjoyed them. They are a great bike, and I am blaming you for the fact that I am finalising the deal on one next week. :) I can’t wait . They are still coming to Australia until about the end of this year. There is up to an 8 week delay and some colours have been discontinued. It’s hard to find a second hand one here, but that will change if they bring out a Classic with the 650 engine in a couple of years. Cheers and keep on riding. 🏍

Very good video Stuart, really enjoyed this one. I love the descriptions of Bullet ownership and ride ability. Thank you also (criticism follows) for not talking about bolt-ons etc in this video, it’s not a trinket. I think the reason dealers ‘ignore’ RE owners.. “ooh, he can only afford £4000 odd for a new bike, he’s not going to be a great repeat customer...” I might be wrong, but that’s how I feel. I was meant to get a new Classic 500 a couple of months ago. Dealer messed me about and I bought a 2017 model privately. Very happy, love the bike and accept any foibles mentioned. I don’t treat it like a race horse, but I do like to hustle. I also have a 350 Bullet; actually still have my Transalp which was meant to be a PX!

As I said, I'd work through these. It can't vibrate more than my old XT500. And yep, the women did enjoy it. Daring Diana used to love it, in fact.

Hi Stuart! Great video! The classic 500 has been my dream bike for as long as I can remember and I'm saving up to get it. However, I've been having second thoughts lately after learning about the interceptor 650. In your opinion, which bike is the more sensible one to get for someone who plans to keep it for up to 10 years? Which bike is more economical and easier to maintain over a long period? Thank you!

Thank-you for an honest in depth review. Sometimes I wonder if the motorcycle review press get together prior to a bike release around a smoky table and decide which part of the bike they are going to pick on collectively. Particularly in regard to suspension, it's almost the go-to complaint regardless of bike. A transmission smoother than the Interceptor 650 is difficult to imagine, but I agree with you that the Royal Enfield team is making smoother transmissions than even Suzuki. I hope they absolutely crush it. Now, PLEASE, PLEASE Royal Enfield, make a Scrambler 650 and take my money!

My son is picking up an 06' Bullet 500 in a week. He says he's going to ride it for a month then drive down and give it to me! 😆 He gave me a Harley 1200 Nightster last year but a 600 lb. ,fuel injected 1200 is a bit much ,as I have to ride it through grass and gravel to get to the pavement. I'm afraid he'll like it so much he won't "pass it UP!"...so to speak. Meanwhile I ride vicariously , care of Mr.Fillingham! Maybe he'll trade me even?

It's been a year now since I Got my own first Bike which is 2019 Bullet 350 in India itself. Paid for it myself and I couldn't be happier with it. Even a year later it has ran for about 3500kms because I mainly use it to commute from home to work and back. But even though I've been loving the experience especially with the kind of horrible road conditions that we have here it can handle just about anything. And I can still Ride like a king. ❤️

spot on - i sold my 1150GS and bought a bullet. I am done with big heavy expensive to run ego boosters, i am done with blasting down motorways, or looking at the `chicken strip` on my back tyre after a ride to see how brave i am, and wincing at the cost of a new one after only a few thousand miles. I have found my fun, its not perfect, but after 3 years of fun AND 80mpg, I am laughing all the way to the bank.

These videos are encouraging me to dip into the Enfield which I have always been admiring from a distance as a youngster in india. Now being in Australia and a family man lots of things to consider before taking the plunge. Though I feel the Bullet classic 500 is the one for price friendliness the Himalayan is the better bargain. Unsure if I will go adventuring but can feel the call of a dirt road. Just want to know the pros and cons of a Himalayan
