The best thing about the Astartes series is that the Space Marines do genuinely come across as these giant, unstoppable badasses that the lore tells us they are. The figures just don't reflect that these are a super-mega elite force of beings so genetically modified that they're barely human. Same with their weapons; an ordinary person would not be able to handle them. And it captures that dark, gritty and brutal atmosphere that is exactly how I've always imagined 40k to be.

Fun fact: The standard issue "rifle" for the Astarte's, The Bolter, is chambered in a .75 calibre. It basically looks like a massive M433 grenade and is a fraction of the explosive force. That's how you see all those soldiers getting ripped apart by the guns with a mere shot. (I originally said a quarter, but looking through everyone's comment on this one, I changed it to a fraction, because in the lore of the Bolter, it was stated that it did have some explosive within the bolter rounds.)
@aennaenn7468

“Quarter of the explosive force” there is not actually any lore about how strong the bolts are. Writing has them anywhere from blowing a guy in half to killing him and several dudes around him. Considering we could easily do that with modern explosives in a .75 shell, I’m leaning towards it being anti-squad level power. The only reason grenade launchers aren’t like that is expensive of such explosives and difficulty of using a fuse for it in such a frame reliably. The Imperium would have no such issues for Astartes armament.

It wouldn't surprise me if some of the bulls**t that we see in SCP was inspired by the Warp in 40k. The whole universe is just bonkers. There is a reason even hardcore fans agree that nobody would like to live in that particular universe after all.

For context: The standard issue weapon for a Space Marine is known as a Bolter or Boltgun. This weapon is if you mixed a .50 Browning Machine gun with a Milkor MGL-140 grenade launcher . Their projectiles are roughly the size of beer cans, rocket propelled and sometimes uranium tipped. The word "overkill" does not begin to state it.

general background info for anyone looking for a bit of education The whole setting is set in the 41st millennium (hence Warhammer 40k) Astartes (Space Marines) are genetically engineered super soldiers, 7-8ft tall, extra organs (19 of them! like a second heart, a 3rd lung, a pre-stomach to filter poisons, instant clot blood, that's the the red chunks you see him puke at the end, etc) armed and armored with basically some of the best tech that humanity can make in that universe (at least as much as they can remember how to make...), that are basically walking tanks with guns (bolters) that shoot mini rocket-propelled grenades (not bullets!) that explode inside their targets, fun times!. They were created by the God Emperor of Mankind (Astartes literally means Angels of Death in high gothic) to give humanity a fighting chance against an EXTREMELY hostile galaxy. There are no good guys in this setting, The Imperium of Man sucks to live in, but it's the only way for humans to survive against the aliens and the force of chaos that come from "The Warp", it's a parallel dimension where daemons and the chaos gods live, think Hell on every kind of steroid you can imagine, The Warp is also how most species in the galaxy are able to travel faster than light. The Imperium is HIGHLY religious, intolerant and xenophobic (by necessity) and takes extreme actions to protect itself from aliens, heresy and chaos, there's an organization in the Imperium called the Inquisition which has, for practical purposes, ultimate authority in dealing with threats to the Imperium, up to and including the destruction of entire worlds and systems. (If you ever came across the term "Exterminatus" on the internet, this is what it references) Finally, in this universe, you have things called "Psykers", which are basically mortals that have a connection to the warp and can act as a conduit for it, channeling immense powers to do some really fucky things. These individuals are VERY dangerous and vulnerable to daemonic possession. Shit that happens in the episodes: So this whole thing starts with some astartes being sent in to deal the leadership of a failed planetary rebellion (rebellions are common enough, sending in space marines to deal with them, less so, but still happens). from all 5 episodes together, it looks like their involvement was the result of the inquisition looking into an alien threat (the orbs) that was likely the cause of the rebellion in the first place as they seem to have mind influencing powers. a combat squad of 5 marines was sent to the enemy ship to neutralize and tap into the orb's communications. the 2 masked dudes they fought were psykers (weak ones at that), either by nature or more likely in the case, through alien technology, inside the vault, all around the unfinished colossus, you see a bunch of masks with spines similar to the now dead psykers, the masks are likely to make more of those and the colossus is likely supposed to be a vessel for the orb. The Inquisitor listening in on the orbs is also a psyker (by nature) and is projecting his consciousness through the warp, this is the conversation that he listens to: Orb 1 (caged on the space marine ship) and Orb 2 is on the rebel ship: Orb 1: Who is here? Orb 2: I have failed brother Orb 1: we have all failed Orb 2: The Astartes deny our touch! Orb 2: You must break your shield Orb 1: Impossible, we'll never survive! Orb 2: YOU MUST! Orb 1: TAKE THEM! (referring to the marines on the rebel ship) at this point the Inquisitorial agent warns veteran commander to "recall them immediately", giving out the warning to save the marines however broke the Inquisitor's focus just enough for Orb 1 to get inside his mind. At the first sign of possession, the Veteran marines do exactly what they are supposed to do and obliterate the body, warp possession is absolutely no joke and can literally result in solar system destroying bullshit. Cut back the Marines, you see the Sergeant get the message, but too late, Orb 2 "takes them" and sucks them into the warp, Sgt tries to blow up the orb with his Plasma pistol but it just ends slagging his hand from the backblast. I'm assuming the weird squid like thing that has all the marines tangled up in the warp is the Orb's true form, the squid gets blasted by some black miasma thing, could be the backlash of his brother orb dying on the Astartes ship, could that the inquisitor managed to save them in his last moments, or it could just be a random deamon/warp predator. Sgt snaps back to reality on an alien world, pukes out some insta-clot blood from having been through the warp (not something you ever want to do without some serious psychic protection, if he were still human, he'd be dead or insane from the trip) and looks on to some bullshit. If you look at the other platforms/pillars in the distant sands, you'll see some flashes on them, the rest of squad coming out of the warp. And that's about it. Sorry for wall-o-text. 40k has some SERIOUSLY DEEP lore... Fucking love that setting!

Those guys with the masks are psykic humans under the control of the orbs, which are part of an alien race called the Yu'vath. They are one of the minor alien races mentioned in Warhammer lore, that would take me alot of paragraphs to explain 🤣

One of the best ways to get into warhammer40k is to buy one of the codexes. You will get all the basics you need to know about a particular faction and in a pretty efficient format. Most important codices would be the space marine, chaos space marines, and the imperial guard, as those will give you a good range of the most active forces in this literary universe.

The guys who look like black skeletons with green guns are called Necrons, basically a race of people who wanted to live forever and ended up being given the technology to put themselves into metal suits with the power of the gaus (green stuff in their weapons). But they lost all emotion etc and were basically controlled by gods. Necrons are so badass and now sleep in their tomb worlds until a day they get disturbed.... imagine excavating a site and it opens up a giant tomb with millions of killing machines with wildly op technology.

You can absolutely use military tactics when playing on the tabletop. In order to better understand how to better use my Necron army, I read about how Alexander the Great devised the Hammer and Anvil approach. I used my Necron monoliths and heavy destroyers in the same way to great affect a fair number of times. Using terrain and line of sight to lure your opponent into kill boxes is surely a useful tactic. Understanding what the enemy can do often gives you tips into how they will deploy or where they will probably go. Gathering intel from the opponent’s point of view is handy, looking at the table from his side helps you to see weakness in your deployment or plans. Makes me wish I still played…
