Mr. Gracie Thank you for your time! All was super good but one of the main things that stuck with me is at the end when you mentioned " It takes time and practice " I'm 45 and just started about one month ago and I've already learned alot and am in the best shape I've been in years! I will always keep your statment " It takes time and practice " in my head to keep me motivated. Again thank for your time.

Good interview. I don't train Gracie JJ but I've come to appreciate him and his style. There is no doubt that it is ring effective. Every MMA practitioner must be familiar with the Gracie family's techniques if they want to prosper in the sport. Royce is a true legend.

Depends what school you go to, for example at Marcellini's Martial Arts Academy for the past 5 years the first 5 to 6 months you don't even grab the GI/ uniform, even though the students wear the Gi we don't teach any moves that grabs the uniform in any way, and it's all moves addressing a striking opponent. The style of Jiu-Jitsu we teach is very good for self- defense. And we have been doing about 5 months Nogi and the other with the Gi. The Gi training does help you improve the Nogi game as well as if your grabbed by your jacket or really any type of clothing... In a self-defense situation that's very common and it could very distracting for someone who is not use to it.

Striking may be your best option with multiple attackers but grappling is definitely necessary as well, as you might get grappled to the ground by the attackers. The real Gracie Jiu Jitsu does have striking as well. In my classes as well as Royces classes students learn defensive kicks... Multiple attackers is a very tough situation anyways, of course depending on the attackers. The best thing is to avoid fights, martial arts if it is taught the right way can give you the confidence, calm demeanor and respect that can help you avoid fights altogether. And the clarity of mind which is a big part of Jiu Jitsu, because of the nature of the art which is about going with the flow versus forcing your way, can help you become a more peaceful person. Of course this is more prominent with the right teachings. If martial arts is taught the wrong way it could actually make some practitioners more aggressive.

There are 2 ways to look at it: The first is give a student something to use "just in case" because it will be better for him to have a less effective method rather than nothing at all. The second way to look at it is don't give a student false confidence that will get them hurt or killed. I never claimed that BJJ is a complete art, but more a specialized training in a specific range of combat.

The fight game is so just like real life. What I mean is, people are gonna be jealous of u, wanna be like u, or wanna be better than u. Royce had such an impact on MMA u have to really think about some of these guys out here today. They fight 3 rounds and look spent. He would fight 3 PEOPLE and still have more in him. Goes to show he's not using a lot of strength. People that speak bad about him are usually jealous that they can't achieve the things in life that he has already!!!!! GO ROYCE!!!

@actionmanrandell Self defense BJJ is good for street fights one on one, but the best would be to cross train between krav maga and BJJ. Both arts cover key aspects of fighting, Krav Maga covers weapon defense and stand up fighting, and Gracie jiu jitsu (or kioto BJJ) covers ground fighting.

I'll always respect Royce in his early days. He really did kick a lot of ass back then and changed the world or martial arts forever. However when you are on top the only place for you to go is down. It's obvious today that MMA is about learning everything that works for you. Ju-Jitsu is very effective but if the other guy knows it too then you better know how to strike as well.

Many of the traditional martial arts (TMA) address fighting multiples and don't get me wrong, I've trained TMA and have even used some techniques in cage fights, but nonetheless TMA is more theoretical than practical. We'd all like to believe that a certain level of training will prepare us for the worst (e.g. a guy twice our size, armed opponent and multiples) but even at mastery level of an art we'd still be at a disadvantage in that situation, not to say it isn't possible.

I agree; Judo is a very effective method. Also, I think a lot of the emphasis in sport BJJ/grapplling would be very dangerous to do on the street in a real fight. The other flawed logic is thinking BJJ doesn't require strength. Yea it doesn't require strength if your opponent isn't strong. However, unless you are an exquisite, mastered practitioner, many stronger opponents will be able to power out of many techniques; strength is one of the greatest advantages in any fight.
@siasti

Hmm. Royce appears to be saying MMA , which was born in the UFC competitions, is not an effective form of self-defense. I'd say that it's a BETTER form of self-defense than BJJ. The more you know, the less likely you are to be defeated...

You are correct in stating that MMA is not reality. Yes, on the street people attack by the group, sometimes with weapons and often by surprise. I do not claim that MMA or jiu jitsu will prepare you for this type of fight. If the fight is one on one, the MMA stylist has an advantage over any other style (all things being equal). With multiple attackers, you are at a disadvantage regardless of style. For every time you see a guy beat 3 guys on youtube there are probably 100 karatekas in ICU.

Experience is the best teacher. The Gracies have a lot going for them in the Octagon. First of all, they grew up on the mean streets of Rio-Jidinero. EVEN WITHOUT formal training, they may still win against a trained martial artist who has never experienced many a street fight. Secondly, most of the strikers in MMA are not expert strikers. Will reply to your profile.

MutenKami you don't understand. All those who fought the early UFC's were masters of their own styles. They are all true martial artists. Without cross training and with no rules standing the fighters up, the ground grapplers/juijitsu prevailed among all the styles. Gracies may no longer be on top now. But there once was a time when Royce Gracie was the best there is.

“If you give me the right leverage I can lift the world” then he talks bull shit and says they added to Japanese jiu-jitsu... he’s too humble, Gracie jiu-jitsu was state of the Art and still to this day is. This is a family of wizards, many many people including Dana and the fertittas credit the family for the UFC, the Diaz brothers are who they are because of it, his style gives smaller men and women leverage to be able to beat a bigger bully.

I will post on your profile . U.F.C. / M.A.A. strikers are lacking some skills. Not to mention ground fighting tactics. For a striker to take out a grappler, using only striking, they are going to have to: 1.) Hit a hell of alot harder. 2.) Master timing / distance dynamics. 3.) Be pinpoint accurate in all their strikes. 4.) Execute with lightning quick speed. 5.) Deliver with bone crushing impact. Same as #1. 6.) Need balance and a little more coordination. TO Be Continued...

Oh and FYI, I'm a pretty decent jiu jitsu player but if I'm ever forced to fight multiples, its all punches from my end. Kicks risk getting taken down, a place I don't want to be, so its lots of footwork and straight rights. I'll probably lose but I'm going down swinging, lol. Oh, and if you are on the ground against multiples BJJ may come in handy in being able to get back to your feet. Even a 2 on 1 is a style match up. I think even a good karateka would be in deep shit against 2 wrestlers.
