I always enjoy your no nonsense (well, a little nonsense) honest videos. Those speakers do look appealing. I have a pair of NHT Super Zeros and in the literature it says they are only designed to reproduce midrange and treble and should be used with a sub. You are right, trying to make a small speaker reproduce deep bass can be an exercise in futility.

Yep, sometimes it’s best to just focus on one area rather than missing on several points, some speakers try to do too much for certain.

Based on this and reviews from others, I had decided to give these speakers a try, after all, RSL has a good return policy on these. Upon trying them out on my computer system, I simply replaced the satellite speakers on my Cambridge Soundworks, subsat system. I played a few of my standard test songs from Steely Dan. Right away, I had noticed this peak at roughly 350hz, making the speakers have a very boxy sound. The upper kids to highs were good and the imaging was much better than with the old speakers, but I had found I had to adjust the eq controls for 250hz and 500hz about 4db to mitigate the "bonk". Even with that correction, the peak was still noticeable. So, I flipped the speakers to put the tweeter on top, no change. I raised the speakers up to ear level.and the speakers got a bit brighter, but the bonk was still there. It did dawn on me that perhaps it might be the subsat amplifier and I had taken the speakers to a different room, with a totally different sound system and tried it out there using the same music, but on a CD. The peak was still there. Next, I had hooked up a pair of really old Realistic Minimus 7w speakers to my computer system and tried that out. They sounded thin in the 350hz range, but then I forgot I still had the eq set for the CG3m's. Flattening the eq controls bad to 0 and the Minimus 7s sounded fine. So after all this testing, the problem is with the RSL CG3m speakers. I just started the return process on these moments ago. I reported back here because I am curious if others had purchased this speaker and experienced the same issues I had with it.

Do you really think these wouldn’t be great for metal? Even with sub? Versus other speakers with a sub? I’m considering these plus a Speedwoofer 10S MKII, but I mostly listen to metal and other music with big dynamics.

I found the Sonys you referenced to sound like nails on the chalk board and the little Elacs to sound so bloated with one note sloppy bass…i think those speakers might be worth $50

I actually only paid 77 for the ELAC, that was the original release price, the Sony was around 99, both have since went up unfortunately. The 100-200 category will definitely have some compromises, at the prices I paid I think they do fair, the prices currently can be a stretch.

@@MattCoykendall1Excellent! I'm sure you'll test it against the a07 and a07 pro..maybe the fosi v3. I myself was toying with the idea of replacing my a08 pro and upgrading the op amps to sparkos op amps... but now I am worried about too much power. I barely crack the 10 o'clock position as is in my near field setup. Also I think this has a true sub out which the old a07 did not have. Anyways I am looking forward to the review!

I was thinking about the budget set up. If i had a budget near field 2.1 system under a thousand, id probably spend about half on the speakers themselves, 400 to 500, then 90 for the wiim, 150 for a dac, another 100 to 150 for the amplifier and the rest on a sub for 150 to 200 depending., so like a jamo 808 sub. (Thats very close to the core of my current system. ) I doubt most would make the sub the most expensive item, though im sure there is someone out there who loves bass and just might. I could see someone grabbing the amp and speakers from rsl, but ironically going with a different sub.
@MattCoykendall1

I agree, always a safe bet to spend the biggest portion on speakers. The RSL sub isn’t the cheapest option here but it’s just a good safe pick.

I have ended up buying a pair of these RSL CG3M speakers. I had first heard of them on Randy, Cheap Audio Man's page, but I been here as well as checked them out with many other reviewers. In the end, I figured that these would do the job as replacements for the Cambridge Soundworks satellite speakers I been using on my computer system. So I purchased them and hooked them up to my system. While the overall sound is FAR better than with the Cambridge satellite speakers (which are single cone drivers in a tiny cube box), I have noticed a rather pronounced 'bonk' or resonance at around the 350hz area. I was wondering if the OP or anyone else that has these has experienced this as well. I have the speakers right on my desktop and they are only a few inches from the wall. I cannot bring them further from the wall. I had turned off the subwoofer to confirm that the bonk was indeed coming from the RSL's, and it was. To mitigate it, I had to reduce the 250hz and 500hz controls almost 4db! It does sound nice now, but there is still a hint of that 'boxy' sound there. I am wondering if anyone else had experienced this as well.

See, I call Total BS on this any speak that can't down to at least 60Hz for these small speakers! At 90Hz it can't even reach the recommended 80Hz THX asks for. I love the RSL subs and these speakers takes away from them.

@@c.s.herman860 Some 4" can, but these aren't them=P Again, THX's recommendation is 80Hz moving up to 90Hz means that's 10 Hz more the Sub has to cover. Many feel even 80Hz is too high!

Just picked up a pair after roasting a pair of old Micca MB42's. My use case is a bit specific - I want the ability to crank these loud. From what I can see these will be able to handle a decent output whereas those with any kind of bass boost will either fall apart or just implode. I have a choice of the SVS SB1000 or a Speedwoofer 10S 2 to provide the bass and I will report back. Also - love RSL - their support is exemplary!
