WW1 was the first modern war on an industrial scale. It killed millions of people on and off the battlefield. Millions died in No Man's Land, in trenches, at sea, under the sea, in the air and undergound.
But in the cold light of day, the war was an individual one. Millions of family suffered bereavement, parents lost children, children lost fathers and communities were literally torn apart.
One individual who suffered due to the war, was Britain's poet and author, Rudyard Kipling. Kipling was an ardent patriot and despite his son suffering from poor eyesight, he wangled a commission for his son John. John would soon be involved in the British assault at Loos in 1915. Sadly he was killed whilst attacking German positions.
Kipling never forgave himself. After the Battle of Jutland and the death of the heroic Jack Cornwell, Kipling wrote his famous poem, Have you see my boy Jack.
