In loving memory of Peter Roussel (Oct. 23, 1941 - Dec. 26, 2022).
In June 2022, the College of Arts & Media at Sam Houston State University welcomed the world premiere workshop performance of "Ruffled Flourishes: A New Musical" by Peter Roussel. Following the play in 2016, this musical adaptation was developed in collaboration with SHSU theatre and music faculty, staff, and students, both based on Roussel's novel, Ruffled Flourishes (2009), a fictionalized and comic retelling of his interactions with the press corps in the White House.
About Peter Roussel:
Peter Roussel, distinguished Philip G. Warner Chair of Journalism, joined the faculty of Sam Houston State University in the fall of 2009 following his forty-plus years working in public relations, including his leadership role as managing partner of Neumann Roussel Public Relations from 1996-2003. Besides his professional expertise in corporate public relations, Peter Roussel lived a life of service in the political arena. From 1969-1974, he was press secretary to George H.W. Bush during his years as a member of the U.S. Congress and as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Mr. Roussel returned to Washington in 1974 for his first White House appointment as staff assistant to President Gerald R. Ford. He returned to Washington in 1981 to serve for six years under President Ronald Reagan as special assistant and press secretary. In these significant roles in public service, he provided multiple briefings for the White House press corps, a witness to history on numerous occasions while traveling with President Reagan on domestic as well as international trips.
An immensely popular instructor at Sam Houston State University, he taught classes in writing for public relations, advertising, and the press and the presidency. His appreciative students praised his vitality, skills, and strengths as a communicator in the classroom. His classes on public relations and press-presidency interactions (always taught during election years) made history come alive through his anecdotes and insider knowledge. Besides his revered faculty status in the Department of Mass Communication, Professor Roussel also collaborated with SHSU theatre and music faculty, staff, and students in the staging of two original works for the popular stage (the play in 2016; the musical adaptation in 2022), both based on his novel, "Ruffled Flourishes" (2009), a fictionalized and comic retelling of his interactions with the press corps in the White House.
Recently, Peter Roussel received one of the first College of Arts & Media Legacy Awards for his distinguished career and dedication to our students at SHSU. Peter Roussel made a difference in this world. His years in the corporate world and in the public arena of American politics enriched his years of dedicated teaching. Professor Roussel lived and taught the value of a life of service. He stands as an exemplar for all who were fortunate to know him.
