Ah, 280 isn't that undersized especially in a 4-3. A big DT normally plays the sole DT in a 3-4 an is responsible for eating blocks so the edge rushers can get in the backfield. But in a 4-3 its common for a team to have a 280-300 pound DT as an extra rusher, and then a massive 320-350 pound DT to soak up blocks up the gut. Plenty of DTs have had success at Donalds size before him and plenty more will after him. Of course he is a special special player.

Aaron Donald, another Pittsburgh product. The early Video of him in the red and gold jersey was indeed from his high school days at Penn Hills, only about 45 minutes from where I grew up and played. We were the same classification as his school when I played, so theoretically if we didn't suck we could have met up with him at some point. His career at U Pitt was phenomenal, and he was absolutely unstoppable. Love the Pittsburgh love that the channel has been getting lately. You recently reviewed Gronk's highlights and he also was from right around the Pittsburgh area, at Woodland Hills high school. With all the Pittsburgh love, I wanna recommend my two favorite STEELERS legends. Jerome "the Bus" Bettis a "260lb" running back that was realistically more like 285 and was very agile for his massive size. And my all time favorite player, one of the greatest play making strong safeties of ALL TIME and a sure fire Hall of Famer Troy "the Tasmanian devil" Polamalu. If you only had to pick one, look at Troy, so many of his greatest plays were at the end of game or in crucial times when we needed a stop, and the guy with the big crazy hair ALWAYS came through for us. Definitely consider looking at Troy Polamalu!! you will NOT be disappointed.

Warren Sapp & Jon Randall were outstanding, but Donald is in a league of his own. The most sacks for a DT in a season in NFL history -Has lead the NFL in QB pressures, tackles for loss almost every season he has played and has done it at the DT position which is usually for a guy to take up space & blocks for linebackers to make plays. Donald is by all means a FREAK OF NATURE! Most fun player I have ever watched on defense.

12:19 That move is called the short swim. Before making contact with the offensive lineman you hit his hands with the same hand as the direction you are going in and with the back hand you swing your arm up and over avoiding the blockers hands as much as possible. The things AD does at his position are unheard of. As a DT/Nose Guard myself it is the most thankless position on defense. You are meant to control your gap responsibility to prevent run plays and take up multiple blocks so that you can free up the linebackers to roam around or blitz unblocked as they please. You're not designed to make spectacular plays but Aaron does. This is because offensive linemen today are only used to blocking at a certain height because defensive tackles are not elusive like Aaron. Also, he is much lighter than the typical Defensive Tackle which allows him to drop his hips and dip his pad level much lower than someone who is heavier. It also allows him to rush the quarterback while leaning at angles that are nearly impossible for taller guys to block. Making them have to reach downward to block him. This makes offensive linemen have to lunge forward throwing them off balance which makes it easy for Aaron to capitalize on their mistakes. His lack of height was thought of as a weakness in times past. But even against a double team his leverage and ability to keep separation is key, coupled with his tenacity and plethora of moves in such tight places make him extremely difficult to block. So in short, Aaron is a pioneer for the new prototype Defensive Tackle position. He is ahead of his time and is the future of the interior Defensive line. The game just hasn't caught up to him quite yet.

Here's the thing for me. Aaron Donald is listed at 6-1, 285. The only number that's actually important here is the weight. It's a bit lower than normal, but not by that much. The reason that height matters to DTs is because one of the most important parts of playing the position is being able to get your hands on the offensive player's chest. Donald has 32 1/2 inch arms, which is right in line with where you want a DTs arms to be, since that's about how long the arms of the people they're playing against are. In addition, Donald is just so quick for his size that he gets into position before the linemen that are supposed to be blocking him, and they had a head start!

There are several basic techniques that defensive linemen use. The Spin - self explanatory The Swim move - resembles a freestyle stroke. the defender rotates his arm over the blocker's shoulder, drives his elbow into the blocker's back, stepping with the inside foot first and keeping his hips as low as possible. The rip - the defender brings one arm up violently underneath the pass blocker's arms, keeping the blocker's hands high and away from him. He uses the other hand to drive into the blocker's ribs. again, inside step first, hips low. The Bull Rush - pure power move. keeping low, the defender used speed, power and leverage, exploding both hands into the blocker's chest and pushing him backward. Speed Rush - primarily used by perimeter linemen and linebackers. largely self explanatory. ideally, the defender takes a straight route as close to the blocker's outside shoulder as possible. Good pass rushers use a variety of techniques to beat blocks, although many greats have a favorite, signature move.
