@Hunter12Frank Pads reduce the force of a tackle by around 50% therefore rugby is more dangerous. Also as a typical NFL game only has around 10minutes of actually PLAYING the game (instead of standing around while the commercials are on) compared with rugby players constantly running around and tackling, it's obvious which game is more hardcore. I do like American football though, looking forward to the Superbowl.

....... i dont get how people can say that rubgy players hit harder than football players... these all suck... dump tackles... they cant put their whole body into hits because then they will hurt themselves.... whereas in football the even with pads you get huge hits and injuries still. i have played both and can honestly say that football is funner to play, funner to watch (in person) and the hits hurt alot more.
@Hunter12Frank
12 жыл бұрын
@jspesh Yeah I get your point, just saying that the hits are so big that without pads there would be players dying. I admit rugby is more demanding for cardio, it requires a totally different type of fitness than american football (running nonstop versus running at full speed for brief periods of time) I was just tired of watching football videos and seeing rugby fans hating on a sport they don't know and watching rugby vids and seeing the top comments hating on football...
@Hunter12Frank

@MrPielilGaming Just so you know, american football tackles are harder since on every play players are basically running at each others at full speed (I think they've measured hits on sports science) In 1905, before equipment was introduced, 20 players died of hits and 150 were grievously injured, at a time when players were about half the size and speed they are now. I agree that rugby is a really physical sport and I respect it, but without protections players would die...

COME ON NOW GUYS... We all know if the men that played American football played Rugby. The Rugby world we know now would get dominated by the American team. But we Americans do not care about Rugby. I am not here to get down on Rugby, I love playing Rugby.

@Polored1066 let me bet: you are european. europeans are so proud of their rugby they turn to become blind. I can say the same thing. And the funny thing is, most athletes who run with pads on STILL look better than rugby players!!! I am not blind either. I'll say the truth. Rugby is definitely a brutal sport, no doubt about it. I just said that football players are just more athletic looking and natural. Watch some football videos. I want to see robots run with that much fluidity and grace.

@QRF11B If you knew anything about rugby you'd know the game isnt solely based on hitting like football. Rugby is all about keeping the game going, fast paced, you dont wanna slam hard and waste energy because you want to keep up with the play. Football is designed to have hard hits, and then be setup again. The argument you are making is dumb and pointless because the two sports are totally different in that aspect. Im from the US btw, and have been playing Rugby for over 9 years.

If you wanna watch brutes kill each other, go watch American football. This is messed up. Spear tackles have no part in the game of rugby, and the idiots who condone them as "part of the game" just want to see players get hurt. This is a tactical game played on the edge, not some contest to see who can dump their opponent most violently. If you want it to turn into a sport for yobbos, then by all means keep the spear tackle. But this is the game of the gods, not the game of the dogs.

The reason why rugby is the best sport i know is (other than tackling of course) because you can use just about every guy in the neighbourhood in a rugby team. Tall lanky kids can be locks, short fat ones can be hookers, big lumbering ones can be props, fast runners can be wings, quick skilled hands can be half back or other backs, good tacklers can be flankers or 2nd 5-8... kickers can be 1st 5-8. Everyone has a place and everyone makes a difference... As long as they get stuck in :)

@Spuddfluff ive played rugby for most of my life and when someone hits me in a good tackle ill give them a pat on the back and proper hand shake at the end of the game, but if some one gets carried away and does reckless stuff i.e picking some one up regardless of wether or not they have passed "the horozontal", its not them who will spend the rest of there lives in a wheel chair. as i said go watch the blues vs crusaders highlights from 2011 and see some real tackles.

I don't play/have access to rugby because it's not big in the US. I see some players wear what looks like padded helmets? Well, they look like they're just filled with silicon or something. What service do they provide? Is it literally a meager form of protection (maybe a player that had a minor concussion or something), or does it keep the head warm, thus keeping the whole body warm/more agile? Just curious. Thanks for the reply.

OWTS1885 so your telling me a sport where sponsorship has almost ruined it in terms of physicality is more dangerous than being in a scrum with over 70 stone against you or being lifted in a line out and one mistake your landing on your neck and there will be damage.in rugby there is always someone throwing his whole weight into the other mans body.people who die in football is mostly thru cardiac problems

@roverspike09 I personally couldn't care less about who hits harder. I know what both sports are like. What I think is best is the camaraderie of the sport. I've been in fights on the pitch and 2 hours later were drinking together and talking about life, women, singing etc. American football has never been like that. American Football is a sport. Rugby Football is a lifestyle,.

Two comments on this: 1. Some great tackles in the compilation, but also a lot of cynical cheap hits, dangerous spear-tackles, late tackles and generally violent but not good rugby hits. I don't think these things should be celebrated in the same way as some of the awesome tackles that are here too. 2. Why is there a slow-mo close-up of Ronan O'Gara (about 3mins in)? Don't think he's made a decent tackle in his life and is obviously not seen tackling anywhere in the video... :)

I did once, shatter 4 ribs of a guy when I made an outstanding tackle, ran into me at full pelt, locked him on my shoulder then hit him into the ground. legal tackle. Rugby is a very good sport. Alright, I see this argument on every rugby video. As someone that played football in high school and rugby in college...let me say this, the majority of the "big" hits in football are usually harder than the ones in rugby. That is because there is a lot more space, and lets face it the helmets and pads allow you to hit harder. However, the hits in rugby are still fucking hits don't get me wrong, and on top of that rugby players are literally 10X better athletes. 80 mins no stop vs. 8 mins

Its sad that 95% of the tackles in these videos are illegal, and that 70% of the ones in this video in particular are fucking body slams. Since when can you just pick up someone and drop them on their head in rugby? Shoulder checking is even looked down upon in rugby. The best TACKLE is at the knee or waist, and sliding down to the knees (your arms) and pulling them together. This is how tiny george gregan took down Lomu so many times.

@motley0crue12 no they are 2 different sports altogether and union has 15 players league 13..their main difference is what happens in the tackle situation , union you have to go through rucks and mauls where as in league you jst release the tackled player he gets up n the game continues..union is more structured i would say.

Most of these hits were Illegal spear tackles that surely landed the offenders minimally in the bin and hopefully suspended. We need to stop glorifying illegal, dangerous and reckless play in rugby. The game is tough enough as it is, there is no place in rugby for intentionally endangering the long term well being of opposing players. We all have necks to think about....
@UserOfCommonSense

i suppose that even if some of the tackles are illegal it takes nothing away from how tough you have to be to play the game, because although these tackles are illegal they still happen regularly. getting the penalty, and seeing the opposition player possibly sin binned or red carded, doesnt make it hurt any less!

@naujxam3 They aren't evolutions of rugby and cricket; american football and rugby diverged because they had different opinions about the old scrum rule, and the americans only developed baseball because they weren't part of the commonwealth and thus were told that they were not allowed to compete by the english.

@roverspike09 I dunno about "class", it's quite violent at times. I guess it depends on what you mean by class. It does take more individual strategic planning and placement than American football. American football is really focused on one or two key players, the rest are just mindless flesh walls. So perhaps sports skills can be evaluated in that way.

i love how this is a video about big hits and then you have a video of o'gara, the weakest player to grace a rugby pitch LOL He's a great goal and tactical kicker and runs a backline really well, but he's not a tackler lol but then, i'd rather a 10 was a kicker and playmaker. who really needs a huge hitter at 10 if you have a half decent openside who will protect the fly half?

@TheGur...haha are you from America? It is much harder to play football at a D1 level because football is a more popular sport, so a lot more people play. Only 1 college has a true varsity rugby team. I am not saying football players are not strong or fast, but the fact is you are moving a lot more in rugby than football, and it is a more physically demanding sport.

no actually it doesnt. i would like to see you someone like ladanian tomlinsin or jonathan stewart with no pads vs someone on rugby... it would be about equal. except for the fact that they are two different sports so they could never do that. so its pretty much pointless comparing two different things in this situation..

Football players are all around so much more athletic, like when you see a running back or receiver running it looks so natural. when you see MOST rugby players ( i say most because i have seen some who just flat out fly) it looks so ugly. Football is a lot more entertaining.
