You beat me to it! I love my FN 5.7. Definitely one of my most favorite guns. I keep mine loaded with Elite Ammunition T6B rounds. The FN 5.7 was designed for the FN SS90 ammo (now the FN SS190 ammo) and vice versa. All of the other ammo for the FN 5.7 is very underpowered and does not show the full potential of why the handgun and caliber were both made. The Elite Ammunition T6B rounds will actually out perform the FN SS90/SS190 rounds and will defeat all body armor except AR 500 plating. Out of the EA T6B ammo, I typically see velocities of anywhere from 2,550 ft/s to as high as 2,650 ft/s. I was initially excited about the Ruger 57, when it was announced but with the known safety issues and certain areas of poor qc, I don’t foresee myself buying one unless those things get fixed.

I've shot both. I agree that FN has a SLIGHTLY better trigger in regards to creep and wall break, but I like the rugers trigger coming further back. Ive also found a trigger mod that almost eliminates the creep, and shortens the travel, making it more like my AR15 trigger, which is even better. Overall, the ruger is an improvement. As far as cost, only two places in alberta carry the FN 57, and it's $2200. I picked up the ruger for $900. I could literally buy two ruger and four boxes of ammo for the cost of the FN. Nuff said.

I spent a last week handling them both (I manage a gun shop) trying to decide which I wanted. While I like the ruger, I hate the grip it feels like holding a cheap square piece of plastic. The fn has a more finished feel. I absolutely love the safety on the ruger. But the FN you quickly pick up and it’s then easy to operate. The triggers tho the FN just feels so much better, shorter reset. The most important part tho we just got 20 FNs and 100 of the Ruger 57. Every FN feels the same out the box. From trigger to mag release to slide, Very consistent. The rugers the trigger feel varies a little, the mag release feel varies, like just a lot of inconsistencies. And while the ruger being a lot cheaper and having some nice feature I really like it definitely feels like a cheaper pistol.

The Ruger 57 has less recoil, shoots flatter, has a better trigger, and smaller grip. However, in very humid environments where one is working outdoors, I would never carry the Ruger 57 because the metal magazine would be prone to corrosion. I have had or still own several Ruger pistols from the LCP, to the Security 9, the Max 9, American Pistol, and the 57. None of them have ever given me any issues. While I do agree the FN is a high quality pistol with a better trigger, having fired both side by side... There hasn't been anything about the FN that justifies paying double the price of the Ruger. That being said, in my honest opinion, if the Ruger is selling at $650-700, and the FN were $850-900... I would say spend the extra $150-200 on the FN. I would not spend an extra $500 for a marginally better gun, but thats just me. Maybe Im just cheap... Ruger has discovered that a small number of Ruger-57™ pistols may have right safety levers that do not meet our specifications and may be prone to cracking. In some rare instances, the internal "leg" of the right safety lever may crack or break, rendering the manual safety ineffective. If present, this condition may cause the manual safety to appear to be functioning properly when it is not. Although only a very small number of pistols appear to be affected, Ruger is committed to safety and is asking owners of Ruger-57 pistols to immediately perform a routine function check of the safety lever to ensure its proper operation and, if necessary, sign up for this retrofit. Potentially affected pistols include any Ruger-57 pistol with a serial number of 642-26274 or lower (including all Ruger-57 pistols with a “641” prefix). If your Ruger-57 pistol is within this range (641-00000 to 642-26274), you should follow the inspection procedure outlined in the Safety Bulletin to determine whether your pistol requires a retrofit. Ruger-57 pistols with a serial number of 642-26275 and above are not affected by this Safety Bulletin.

The black oxide finish on the Ruger is terrible looks nice but not very corrosion resistant. Also the Ruger is pretty much junk anything made in the USA is usually substandard quality. That ammo even out performs the the original FN SS90/SS190 rounds, which one designed for the FN 5.7 and vice versa. All other 5.7x28mm ammo is grossly underpowered and does not show the full, true capabilities of both the FN 5.7 handgun or the 5.7x28mm round. 4:49 ".. overall similar.. " That's stretching things a bit, don't you think? The Five seveN has much smoother rounder contours, while the Ruger is more blocky and hard edges. Aesthetics is in the eye of the beholder, so one can make up one's own mind which approach one prefers. I personally find the Ruger harsh and too aggressive. 15:36 Price! Yeah, all FNs tend to be pricey, so if you are unwilling to pay the price, you can just settle for the cheap Ruger. But remember, the Five seveN is an FN! If you don't know what that means then by all means buy the cheap Ruger. Me? I'd take out a mortgage if I have to to rather buy the Five seveN! "..cripple FN sales" Boy was that wrong! FN STILL cannot meet demand for the Five seveN, it's so popular. Even with the cheap Ruger selling well. Drop the price? You must be kidding! FN never do that. Bottom line is that Five seveN will appeal to FN lovers, while the Ruger will appeal to bargain hunters. Each to his own. Thanks for the video.

I do feel that the FN is a better product over all and here's why: ☆ The cold hammer forged/chrome lined barrel will absolutely out last the Ruger (not that many people will exceed the limits of the Ruger during their's or the pistol's life-span). IMHO, Cold hammer forged/ chrome lined barrels are only worth the $ in applications where I intend on making many rapid high capacity mag dumps. The cold hammer process does give you more accuracy but that improvement in accuracy gets canceled out by the chrome lining as it is next to impossible to get that lining even throughout the inside of the barrel. ☆ I also think that the FN spring design lends itself to better longevity, reliability, less recoil & less muzzle flip (I think that the benefits of this difference in geometry would not be very noticeable, if at all). ☆ The FN's lighter slide also lends itself to less recoil & muzzle flip (again, a slight and probably unnoticeable felt difference). ☆ The FN's safety may not be quite as ergonomic as the Ruger's but it's position is protected by the holster, it is slimmer and should be more comfortable in a concealed carry situation vs the Ruger's safety albeit nicely rounded as it is. This is obviously a subjective observation and a matter of opinion that probably won't matter to most (I agree with the video, I like the Ruger safety better too. ☆ The FN's trigger takeup, positve break and reset are the biggest differences in functionality between the 2 as I see it (as stated & showcased in the video). In closing, while I do feel (as previously stated above) that the FN is better than the Ruger, I would say that it is 5% better. The I was on a waiting list for the Ruger 57 and just purchased it for $650 NIB on 12/10/2020! All of the FN Five-seveNs that I see for sale are going for $1,200. No way in hell, am I gonna spend 97% more $ for 4-5% more performance! Due to the substantially higher cost of manufacturing the FN Five-seveN, I doubt that the price will ever drop below $900-$1,000. This (again IMHO) makes the Ruger a much smarter buy for most people......

6:30 Why does Ruger still have problems with trigger creep? You would think.... M77 rifles, same issue. I've had two 77 MkII sporters and love them but replaced triggers in both. Anyway, off topic but thanks for this SxS review

great way to run a comparison but 1- draw a square on the mat or something to keep your displays centered and hold each angle til youre sure its focused 2- you should have taken a half min ea to mention the FN having the guide rod integral to the frame and the other unique item appearing to be a sleeve for the locking lug rather than the usual machined from the same block as the barrel

Ruger made a cheap model, one main thing I’d like to point out is they skipped adding a chrome lined barrel which is a must for high velocity rounds.
@wolfhuntersarmory

Chrome lining a barrel has positives and negatives... jusy like in an AR... a chrome-moly steel barrel (standard, unlined barrel) gives higher accuracy but a shorter service life. Chrome lining gives a longer life, but decreased accuracy due to the process of lining the barrel. Will that make much of a difference in a pistol with a short barrel? I dont know... it does make a big difference in the AR platform when distance shooting. It would be interesting to see this tested, since barrel lengths are very close in both pistols.

It’s not a must . Rugers barrels are good for 20k rounds just like fn . I have both and the new Fn mk3 and fn does not chrome line there barrels now on the Fn k3 now .

No magazine disconnect on the Ruger which makes it hands-down the better gun. When you add in the price comparison and the Ruger is an American company it's an absolute no-brainer.

@@trav-c137 I have the FN five-seven which I will gladly trade in when I could find a reasonable Ruger 57. My personal opinion of what it's good for is: a bug out gun or a survival/ backpack Camp gun. Most people will find that they can shoot more accurately with this handgun caliber and the ammunition is extremely easy to carry in volume with its lightweight compact cartridges. I don't understand why so many people can't understand the usefulness when there is a fair amount of survival 22's out there that are not nearly as accurate or compact as this little handgun. You can easily hit small game at a reasonable range and in civil unrest situations you can easily disperse a crown with the large volume of ammo you can carry in the capacity of the actual magazine. So for me if I had to bug out and feed myself and survive on what is in my bug out bag this would surely be the one to bring.

I have the RUGER 57 and I'll accept the trigger creep for its increased reliability over the FN Five seveN. Surely there will soon be aftermarket trigger upgrades for the RUGER 57. I have a simple trigger upgrade for my PS90 from Promoted Pawn that is just drop-in easy. BTW, the only closed mag pouch I've found for this pistol is from The Vest Guy. He makes them to your spec for the kind of heavy Codura canvas, closure type and belt or MOLLE attachment. Very high quality. I also had him make me two double mag pouches for my PS90 long 50 round mags.

Just to let everyone know , if you buy any of these guns make sure you buy legit armor piercing ammo, like blue tips or the infamous Black Fang NOT FMJ’s, otherwise you might as well get a .22 WSMR for less

You can't get the actual Ruger 57 in California, so whether I can get ten round mags for it or not is irrelevant. And finding 10 round mags for the the FN Five-seveN is easy, though again irrelevant, as the FN is a bit outside my price range at this point. Cheers.
