The Ruger’s I bought in synthetic stocks shot great. The Ruger’s in wood furniture needed bedding and floating. I have Ruger’s from pencil barrels to heavy. They all shoot great. The ones in wood stocks needs floating and bedding. Just simple bedding in the front of the action.

I read your comments on both videos, but for the sake of time I'll answer them both here. I agree with your assessment of the wooden stocks. Working on the stock is the next step in our series on this one. I decided to troubleshoot starting with the simplest things like ammo selection and muzzle attachments while documenting the process along the way. We did get some decent groups early on with a couple of varieties of ammunition, but the results weren't consistently repeatable. We then moved on to swapping the scope and ring lapping to rule a bad tube. The stock would have been the first place to start (in my mind) had it not been that I was trying to "fix her" without voiding the warranty as many folks are apprehensive about doing anything that will void their warranty. (It is written in the owner's manual that modifications to the stock such as glass bedding will void the factory warranty.) I feel as though we're getting close to having it dialed in. Got kinda a big deal happening soon that I'm excited about, so hope you tune in for the next segment. Thanks for watching 👍

Interesting gow simular our experiences are with very similar rifles. I have the Hawkeye Predator in 308. It taught me great features and good internet reviews don't make for a great shooter. Like you, I have gotten excited about a tight group here and there only to not be able to repeat it using ammo from the very same box. Ive been working with this rifle for several years. Short of a barrel swap I suspect you've done the best youre going to do. I settled on Hornady Outfitter 165 GMX. Consistently just over an inch at 100. Consistency is critical as you know. All that said, I really like the rifle. It has dropped everything it has been pointed at. It's just a 200 yard hunting rifle and I'm resigned to be OK with that. Stay at it, great job so far!

FWIW, when I'm shooting for record, such as you are in this project, I do not shoot from a lead sled of any brand. When you take the recoil out of a rifle, or attempt to, it's unnatural. Guns don't shoot well. I use a pedestal front rest with a leather bag, ensuring there is no interference with the sling swivel stud, combined with a leather bag under the buttstock. The gun can now recoil freely and not drag a piece of machinery with it. Keep in mind recoil starts when the bullet begins to move. Thanks for the vid!
@majorspittle1
19 күн бұрын
That rifle doesn't have enough weight on the fore end to free recoil, just look at the front of the rifle jump up and how much the sled moves (there is no linear recoil in this set up). His cheek is pressed on the comb of the rifle. Just think, when the trigger breaks, pin drives forward, seats the cartridge, and detonates the round; all with nothing stabilizing the fore end of the rifle to keep it on target, the fore end is just balancing there. Now on a heavy barreled target rifle with more weight on front of rifle and correct stock you could get away with doing what he is doing but not with this rifle. What bothers me is that he is giving the rifle a bad review but the problem seems to be primarily his shooting method, which he is not looking at. No biggie, we all learn sometime, but pls verify your shooting method along with everything else. Cancel Reply Cancel Reply

Yes lead sleds NEVER provide a legitimate POI with the best groups. Toe bag and front bag or pedestal with bag is the Way. When zeroing for the hunt I’ll zero in the position I’m most likely to employ. If that’s prone it’s prone. If from a seated tree stand then I do it from a seated bench with rail. Anyway this works for me because recoil patterns do affect POI.

Sorry for the delayed response. That is actually one of the variables that I want to test on the channel. I'm going to try to get some good solid repeatable data across a range of samples ie; several guns, several groups, and a variety of rest platforms. As I'm sure you can imagine it's going to be a big project and rather time consuming and costly. Ron Spomer has done a couple of videos on changing shooting positions while shooting from the bench with some interesting results. While I have yet to do any side by side comparisons between different rest platforms, I haven't noticed the lead sled being detrimental to accuracy in general. (Who-Tee-Who gets some fantastic accuracy off a lead sled, but I'm not in his league.) Granted the ranges I'm utilizing the lead sled at are rather limited
@MinimumSpeedOperator

@@JayLewisFarmStyle yes that would be awesome content! The sled can crack stocks and depending on the individual rifle can hurt best groups but not always. But I definitely see POI difference depending on positional shooting. This is mostly in heavy recoiling guns with slower velocity and even then it isn’t extreme but it can be up too 1 MOA in my observation. Sometimes it can simply be head eye position on the various shooting positions that can cause parallax with a scope or affect the way your eye perceives sights. Heck even the way the sun hits iron sights can have an effect. I’ll be looking forward to this video!

I’ll never judge a rifle off factory ammo, sometimes it’s fine but just like my boys new 700, 3” groups out of core lokt ammo .33 with 130 grain nosler partitions and 4831 sc powder I’m struggling to get my daughters 7mm-08 to get off those 2-3” groups but I’ve been trying to tame recoil at the same time and everyone is pushing ramshot big game powder with a 140 grain bullet. I also added a muzzle brand because muzzle limp on that 20” barrel was unreal but I’m sure there is a good combo for all our problems we’ve just got to find them.

I am a hand loader, and appreciate the ability to tune loads to a specific firearm, versatility of projectile selection so on and so forth. That said, the reason for conducting the tests on here with commercial ammo is two-fold: First, the majority of folks concerned (hunters, viewers of this channel, etc) probably aren't hand loaders. I've actually polled the audience in the community tab before and the percentage of folks using factory ammo for hunting was >80%. While not all factory ammo is of the same quality I have achieved extremely good results in the past using off the shelf stuff. You mentioned your boy getting 3" groups with Corelokt which isn't much worse than what this rifle did with Corelokt 150gr. On the other side of that same coin I've got a 15+ year old Walmart issued Savage 110 that will stack those same Corelokt 150s into 0.6" groups consistently. Ironically I've never gotten that rifle to shoot much better than that with load development. Go figure? The other reason for testing with factory ammo is KZitem and the Thought Police don't allow creators to share load data in the videos. Like it or not, this is their house and in order to share content with the world in this format we've got to tiptoe around the moderator mine field. Anyway, thanks for sharing and good luck on the 7mm!

I have a Ruger Hawkeye African in 416 Ruger that shoots lights out after some modifications. The stock configuration leaves a lot to be desired. I had a gunsmith bed the action and free float the barrel which made all the difference. I actually have a Bell and Carlson synthetic stock that I plan to drop it into next. If I was buying a 30-06 I'd probably go for a different option. But for those who want a Dangerous Game caliber there are only a few options in current production. Have to work with what's available.

Jay, I just bought the M77 Hawkeye African in 416 Ruger. I had some minor fitting issues with the magazine plate that took a few minutes to fix. The instructions stated that sights are regulated to be 1" high at 50 yards with Hornady dangerous game ammo. which was relatively true. I have a Leupold MK3 1.5x5 scope on order so I'll let you know how the accuracy plays out. It's not really a rifle where I'm going to shoot a couple of boxes of ammo on a range day. I'm going to leave the muzzle break on and just take your word on the thread protector.

Pleased to hear Ruger stepped up. If it is not the optics, and I am guessing it is not being you purchased the scope new, I am still leaning on the threaded carbine length barrel as the culprit. I am personally curious to hear more comparisons with the various muzzle devices attached but ammo is expensive so (honestly) if it were my money I would install the thread protector for all further testing and call it a day. If you only shoot factory ammunition you might be surprised how well the long forgotten 220 grain round nose offering shoots. Barrels that are flawed in some way generally shoot them reasonably well. I am looking forward to more updates! 👍🙏💪

You should never have to wait that long between shots. Shoot a 5 shot group, then allow the barrel to cool for a few minutes. This is dependent on ambient temps as well. Rugers are very easy to diagnose. For one thing, they all NEED to be glass bedded properly. The next check is the mag box tension. It should never be too tight. You should be able to drop the floor plate, and wiggle the mag box, ever so slightly. If it is too tight, it adds an uneven stress to the action. This will degrade accuracy/precision. Furthermore, if you glass bed your action properly, you don't have to worry as much about exact action screw torque. That becomes a thing of the past. Those that don't understand that, have not been around the platform for very long. A rifle relying on exact torque specs, is a sick rifle. Something that you guys need to understand. Quit making excuses for that. Moving on to the scope rings and torque specs: If you don't know how to properly tighten a fastener, use a torque wrench. The more important aspect to rifle accuracy, is using a "proven" rifle scope in rings that are in perfect alignment. Lap or shim those rings, if they are not.

In a broad general perspective I believe in the overall quality of Ruger firearms. In fact, I would say Ruger overbuilds most of their firearms. I currently own several (more than 10) Rugers. I also believe that their customer service is satisfactory, and have no doubt they would probably fix this rifle if I sent it in to them. That said, since their release more than 10 years ago this particular series of rifles has been plagued by quality control issues, generally effecting accuracy more than reliability. I believe the poor stock fitment to be the likely culprit. However even with a quality stock there are fitment issues with this platform in the recoil lug department. B&C even lists or on their website special instructions concerning this particular rifle citing tolerance issues with the recoil lug. See for yourself here: www.bellandcarlson.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=1157 Knowing this beforehand, I decided to try one for myself and here we are. I'll summarize sending it in for service with this. A flagship rifle shouldn't leave the factory in this condition to begin with and I'm more inclined just fix it myself. I decided to troubleshoot starting with the simplest things like ammo selection and muzzle attachments while documenting the process along the way.

Since the comment I left on your last video, I put a set of talley rings on one of my old round top m77’s (they take 700 bases). Talley prides themselves on not needing lapping and these were probably the most out of alignment rings I’ve ever seen. I know I referenced a Desert dog outdoors video in my last comment and I don’t wanna sound like a simp for the guy but he has a very thorough video on scope ring lapping with the proper alignment tools(they’re not all the same). It’s about a $100 investment but I find that almost all rings need at least a minor amount of lapping. Could this be part of your issue? I don’t know but it’s a variable that I’d want to eliminate. Ruger rings are notorious for needing heavy lapping, I know you’re thinking you shouldn’t need to lap rings on an expensive rifle “package” but even speeding money on expensive rings doesn’t always mean they will be in alignment. I’m not saying there isn’t a problem with the rifle itself but the type of accuracy issues you’re having still smell like scope related issues to me. Wish you best of luck with this rifle!

I follow DDO as well. His presentation was good as usual and I think Ruger factory rings are strong but not worth the effort involved in lapping. Most literally need to be reamed out to make them align properly. I just buy Leupold replacement rings and lap them if needed.

@@hillbillyscholar8126 yeah in my experience Ruger rings borderline need machining lol, it’s not worth it like you said and better off getting different rings. I hope he didn’t ruin that leupold scope, they won’t put up with much deflection.

@@Westerner_ I got warne qd rings on my Hawkeye African and I am pleased with them. Did not need lapping. Nor do I think they recommend lapping vertical rings.

@@guypoulin6929 the Talley rings I just mounted are vertically split and were pretty far out of alignment, only way to know is to check with a ring style alignment tool, in my experience the pointed machined rods can give you a false positive. I lapped them and torqued to spec without issue.

@@Westerner_ good to know. I don't have a lapping kit but then and again I'm not super concerned about pin point accuracy on my particular rifle (416 Ruger). The scope didn't seem to be binding in any way.

Bedding issue I think.

Working on the stock is the next step in our series on this one. I decided to troubleshoot starting with the simplest things like ammo selection and muzzle attachments while documenting the process along the way. We then moved on to swapping the scope and ring lapping to rule a bad tube. The words you are using are that of the Late Great Paul Harrel. Keep with it. He was one of of not the best “gun tubers “ he spoke clearly And had clear and repeatable testing methods. Where they best testing methods? I don’t know but they could be recreated by the common man and have tangible data.

More than likely it is. At a minimum there are fitment issues with the stock. We'll be covering the stock in part 4 of this series. Thanks for watching 👍
